Can someone explain to me how to connect so many monitors? Like I had two HDMI ports and I think thats pretty normal? How are people doing 3+ monitors?

    source
    • spinning_disk_engineer@lemmy.ca ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

You can daisy chain displayport, as long as you have the bandwidth for it. I think the real issue is not how many monitors, but just how many pixels you’re trying to drive. Since secondary monitors are typically 1080p, the whole collection of them should be the same as a 4k main monitor.

      USB video dongles.

      source
    • rumba@lemmy.zip ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

My laptop and a thunderbolt dock can do 4, a 4k panel, 2 qhd and a 1080p all at 30fps

Every Screen adds on bandwidth needs, the more pixes and faster refresh, the fewer screens you can handle.

You can get there with multiple gpus, or if you have lower demands, usb->html

Good grapics cards have 3, you’re not limited to one graphics card

    • KmlSlmk64@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

You need a graphics card or smth to even have the ability to have >3 displays. Some Macbooks have a 2 screen limit, so if you want to use only external monitors you have to close the lid. PC graphics generally allow at least 3 screens.

I have a tower pc with graphics card, dual booting windows and linux so in theory I can put 3 on here? Interesting

    I have 2 monitors + laptop and my setup isn’t even represented here (29" 16:9 and 34" 21:9)

    source
  • poinck@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

I am close to #1, but I have a 16:10 not 16:9 monitor. My laptop lid is always closed. I am a 100% one monitor person.

I am considering an ultrawide at home, but I fear that I will get problems at work if I cannot have the same there. I am not sure, if the linear window manager I am using makes sense with an ultrawide. And third issue: My existing monitor is still good and and awesome features which seem to be rare on other except gaming monitors: auto brightness and presense sensor. At work I can live without these two things, because the desk space has alsways the same brightness.

#13 but the laptop’s in between monitors. Does that count as mental illness?

    I’m none of these.

One large center monitor, a smaller 1080p to the left and right, and above the center large one for a total of four.

    Perfect for being a DM.

For work use I’m #13, except I remove the keyboard, put the laptop in front to use that keyboard, then center the monitors behind it.

    For personal use, I’m #3

I have a software repo with multiple files that are over 5000 lines, IG wouldn’t fit on 10 monitors. I may concede my predicesors who made it this way have a mental illness, but I have to get work done, and it requires reading that file on an appropriately large monitor.

5 but mostly because I like looking at pretty jwst pictures when I die in a video game. Technically it’s for my music player and monitoring torrents…

  • Ooops@feddit.org ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Half of those setups make zero practical sense and are only there because someone thought symmetry would look cool.

Either one secondary monitor that can be pivoted 90° or two, one being horizontal, the other vertical…

Ha, I'm not on here. Wait, that's probably a bad thing.

How is #6 only GIS and not also normal for many gaming rigs?

    • SinningStromgald@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Probably because they don’t have a third category for gamers.

  • Mr_Dr_Oink@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

13 at work 6 at home.

Although in both cases all screens are different sizes and i have a kvm set up at home which allows me to switch the two larger (but still differently sized) screens to show my raspberry pi desktop or my wifes laptop for when she works from home where she has a 13 setup.

#3 is also dumb. Can’t do a single thing right in front of you, the thing is always off to one side or the other. Just commit to #5 if you want two monitors, or do what I’ve also done where my laptop fits underneath my main monitor(only applicable if you are tall enough to warrant such a high monitor placement).
