The best part about it is that almost no US tech would work without Taiwan’s chips

At this point in time, China is just sitting back and laughing as Trump weaken the US.

For all it’s flaws, the TPP was about to effectively zone China out of trading advantageously with the whole developed world. Now, US instability and bullying have made Japan and South Korea partner with China.

Trump handed China the 21st century on a silver platter.

He also listed uninhabited Australian islands and a US military base on an otherwise uninhabited UK island as separate countries. So I would guess China decided that the country list is basically meaningless.

if he really wanted to do some damage, he could pick a random port city - Durrës, say - and decide that goods sent from there incur no tariff. then, after the logistics change to ship out of there, invert the tariff structure and send that region into unrest

That’s kinda like if the Confederacy, upon losing the Civil War, fled and occupied Cuba, and was propped up millitarily by, say, the UK as a millitary foothold to keep the US in check back when the UK still had Imperialist chops, then saying the Confederate-occupied Cuba is the real US.

The fact is, the Communists and Nationalists had a 2 decade long civil war, and the Communists won against the Nationalists, who then fled to Taiwan, where the Nationalists have maintained that they are the legitimate government of China.

As with any revolution, such as the French, American, Vietnamese, Russian, Cuban, etc, I don’t think it makes much sense to declare the French Monarchy, British Empire, French Colonialists, Russian Tsarists, or fascist Batista regime the “rightful” rulers of the countries the people themselves overthrew, and that extends to China.

As for Taiwanese people, the overwhelming majority support maintaining the status quo, with few wanting hard independence or reconcilliation. This may change now that the US is pivoting away from them as well, but both the PRC and ROC seem to be content to maintain the uneasy status quo for the time being. War would be devastating for Taiwan in particular.

It is sad. Everyone is gloating, cheering on a possible conflict in the future. We’ve seen this kind of escalation and warmongering in 2013 in Ukraine. “Of course that country on the doorstep of our big geopolitical rival should be independent and join our military pact! Hahaha lololol!”

My worst case scenario is that HitlerPig keaves NATO, and joins an alliance with Russia, China, North Korea, etc.

As a show of good faith to his new “friends,” he will give Alaska back to Russia, and Taiwan back to China. He will claim it’s a good deal, because they gave him Canada and Geeenland, even though those countries aren’t theirs to give.

He’ll act like the lonely rich kid, bribing the cool kids to let him hang with them, but they’ll just use him for what they can get from him, and hate him all the same.

Putting tariffs on Taiwan is the first step to making them reconcile with China.

Cambodia at 97% highlights how fucking moronic this all is. Let me reindustrialize the economy by cutting off our raw inputs.

    • pepperonisalami@sh.itjust.works ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Better trade relations if we keep imposing tariffs on them, obv.

It varies by instance, some are more Marxist, some are more Anarchist, some are more liberal, some are blends of 2 of those. However, the 2 biggest factors are that the Developers are Marxists and thus Marxists have been building communities here from the beginning, and the rejection of Reddit, a highly corporatized social media platform, in order to jump to a smaller FOSS platform, fits neatly with general anticapitalism.
