I can whistle at the speed of sound

Pssh, I have a 30 year old flashlight that can do the same.
dandu3@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Wait until you learn how old my sun is
fckreddit@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
I have a kerosene lantern that does the same.
RandomVideos@programming.dev 3 months ago
The laser pointer can travel the light of speed? If you turn it on, does the laser not come out of the laser pointer?
OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
The laser and the laser pointer are both traveling away from each other at the speed of light, so from the pointer’s perspective the laser is traveling at twice the speed of light.
Akasazh@feddit.nl 3 months ago
That’s impressive. Having a non-photon mass traveling at the speed of light would break our understanding of physics. Get that laser pointer to the lab ASAP
Ziglin@lemmy.world 3 months ago
At the speeds it’s moving I imagine we already lost it.
prenatal_confusion@lemmy.one 3 months ago
Wait, how do you make the laser pointer travel at the speed of light? I assume it has some mass.
cheddar@programming.dev 3 months ago
Who allowed them to sell the military equipment??

I have wifi router that emits microwaves at the speed of light.
Muscar@discuss.online 3 months ago
Pffft, I have a microwave that emits microwaves at microwave speeds to microwave things.
dch82@lemmy.zip 3 months ago
This guy microwaves
Threeme2189@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
I have lightning fast wifi at home
Etterra@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Elections are slower than light waves so technically you have a slow, shitty router, but at least it can electrocute people so that’s something.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 months ago
Impressive. The future is awesome! Can we maybe apply this to regular light too? Maybe even green light? Or purple? I’m so excited.
Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de 3 months ago
If you go from green to purple, the light gets more excited too.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 months ago

Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 3 months ago
Well, for the green light we already have FTL tech, it was invented and perfected by the car behind you as you are waiting for the light to turn green.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 months ago
Ohhhh right. My bad Sorry…
Eheran@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Is purple actually a light color?
skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
No, but violet is, and that’s pretty close.
andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
Accourding to the Gell-Mann amnesia effect, the same people also write about politics, environment and society.
DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 3 months ago
That sounds neat, I won’t look it up
andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
It was coined by Michael Crichton, you know, the man behind the Jurassic Park. Big Dino man can’t lie. And if they lie they are instantly forgiven.
Morphit@feddit.uk 3 months ago
Yeah, they probably have it all figured out.
10_0@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
I would hope so
chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I’d be more impressed if they didn’t.
SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Is there a way to not?
Edge004@lemm.ee 3 months ago
The medium that the laser goes through could slow it down, but it would still be insanely fast.
Etterra@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Sorta, but it’s a pain in the ass.
Agent641@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Just dont.
julianh@lemm.ee 3 months ago
Wait until they see the speaker that makes noise at the speed of sound.
mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
Honestly I’d be more impressed by the Star Wars kind that go about thirty miles an hour.
Jolteon@lemmy.zip 3 months ago
Those aren’t lasers. They’re contained plasma projectiles.
SandmanXC@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Wake me up when I can buy a lightsaber.
shasta@lemm.ee 3 months ago
Sweet dreams
RandomVideos@programming.dev 3 months ago
There was an auction that starts at the price of 69420 USD and started on the 1st of april of 2022
(The lightsaber is real, selling an extremely dangerous weapon was the joke)

Meanwhile, this headline goes at the speed of clicks:-).
cheddar@programming.dev 3 months ago
This picture got some much compression artifacts just in 3 days lol.
Etterra@lemmy.world 3 months ago
That’s the lasers working.

Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 3 months ago
Have you not seen those Blaster from the galaxy far far away that fire laser half the speed of sound?
Infynis@midwest.social 3 months ago
Those are changed plasma bolts

Water is wet
Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 months ago
Easy there, that’s quite a can of worms you’re tipping over.
CodexArcanum@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Indeed, many would argue that water can’t be wet, only things that water gets on/in.
Morphit@feddit.uk 3 months ago
luciferofastora@lemmy.zip 3 months ago
I mean, the video one makes a little more sense, as it’s about destroying things at the speed of light rather than just firing the laser.
MTK@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I can run at the speed of running, where is my headline?
Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
I can run at the speed of fat
DavidGarcia@feddit.nl 3 months ago
uh ackchuyally it’s not the speed of light
EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 3 months ago
I can run at faster than the speed of sound at mach 2
Eheran@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Show me.
EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 3 months ago
There, I just did it! I was too fast for you to see.
Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 3 months ago
But can it shit at the precise speed of a turbojet fan?
swordgeek@lemmy.ca 3 months ago
I’m more concerned that it looks like a laser turret from Portal.
lowleveldata@programming.dev 3 months ago
It’d be impressive if they fire it at like half the speed of light
Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 3 months ago
I mean, any other non-c speed really.
Glowstick@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Actually, c is the speed of light in a vacuum, but light travels slower through a medium, like air. So lasers shot through air will actually travel slower than c.
Eril@feddit.org 3 months ago
I would be especially interested in speeds larger than c 🙂
Xavienth@lemmygrad.ml 3 months ago
Well that’s pretty easy, just fire it anywhere except a vacuum.
AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 3 months ago
Imagine if they made it fire so slow that you could just do a dark souls dodge roll to avoid it
Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 months ago
Would you accept 10,000 times slower than the speed of light?
MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 3 months ago
Still too fast to dodge.
Redderthanmisty@lemmygrad.ml 3 months ago
Yeah, but this requires that the light be travelling through a dense medium to slow down. It still speeds up again when travelling through air or vacuum
Jumuta@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
just shine a laser through a thing of zircon (index of refraction=1.923~2)
rimjob_rainer@discuss.tchncs.de 3 months ago
Then we could finally have Star Wars laser guns.
