Iirc, yeah basically. Marcille aged faster than other elves and slower than the other races of humans, so she basically never had friends growing up. That’s her entire motivation for going into the dungeon, she wants to find a way to equalize the race’s lifespans so that no one has to go through what she’s gone through anymore

      source
      • fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone ⁨13⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Well yeah but the text mentions elves, not half elves. I think that the pic is only tangentially related and just because they confused Marcille’s ears as elf ears.

        source
  • GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

This is going to sound like a callous comparison. But I think that an elf would think of it in the same way that we think about our most beloved pet.

Your cat will die. You know that, right? Your lifespan exceeds your cat’s by a factor of 5. What’s the point of loving a cat if you’re just going to mourn them for decades after they die?

The point of love is that it has no point. It’s our most basic instinct, our deepest need. Everyone needs to feel love. And death doesn’t stop us from loving those who matter to us.

Apply the same idea to falling in love with someone who has a terminal illness. You will outlive that person. That is a guarantee. But love has no time limit. And the time you spend with that person will be something you hold close to you for the rest of your life, the same way that they’ll hold it for the rest of theirs.

Let elves fall in love. The world is lonely enough as it is.

    source
    • Dentzy@sh.itjust.works ⁨12⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Not wrong, at the same time, my wife and I were incapable of recovering from out first dog’s death and we have not had a new pet since, so, as a general rule, you might be correct, but individually you can still find “elves that would have a problem with it”.

      source
    • renzev@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Pretty sure there is a sizeable demographic of people who fantasize about falling in love with an elf precisely because their relationship will be like that of a pet and owner

      source
      • GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world ⁨13⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Shut up, Elrond. Where was this certainty when all you had to do was kick Isildur into the pit to save the entire fucking world?

    source
    • ByteJunk@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

There’s absolutely no way that could have happened. While Sauron was defeated on the slopes of Orodruin, the movie scene where Isildur and Elrond climb to the ledge of the fires isn’t in the books.

Elrond recounts what happened that day to Boromir, much later:

Isildur took it, as should not have been. It should have been cast then into Orodruin’s fire nigh at hand where it was made. But few marked what Isildur did. He alone stood by his father in that last mortal contest; and by Gil-galad only Círdan stood, and I. But Isildur would not listen to our counsel.

‘“This I will have as weregild for my father, and my brother,” he said; and therefore whether we would or no, he took it to treasure it. But soon he was betrayed by it to his death; and so it is named in the North Isildur’s Bane. Yet death maybe was better than what else might have befallen him.

There’s no way Elrond could have picked up a grieving Isildur who is holding his dead father, carried him kicking and screaming, and yeeted him off the precipice.

Imagine, in the hour of such a pyrrhic victory, with Gil’galad and Elendil bodies still warm after their sacrifice, trying to murder the new High King of the Dúnedain and, technically, the ruler of both Arnor and Gondor over having claimed a ring? That’s a whole new war right there between what human and elven armies were still standing…

It wasn’t in his nature to cut corners.

We only saw half the story, the regret. He had motives for not doing it, we just didn’t see them because we didn’t need to.

I don’t see it seeded in the Tolkien’s world for times after LotR, but having no great evil to cooperate against would put a lot of alliances to the test before they’d learn how to live in peace. This may take a lot of pages if not tomes.

elf wife suffers and mourns you for hundreds of years alone

Even still, you don’t get to choose for her whether or not she’s allowed to love someone she knows she will have to say goodbye to eventually. For all you know those sixty years she spent with you might be a precious memory that makes that long life worth living.

I love my wife more than anything. Even if I knew I was going to outlive her by centuries I would still choose her Every. Single. Time. The memories I’ve made with her are that precious. I don’t think I even have words for how upset I’d be at someone trying to say that we shouldn’t be together because I’m going to massively outlive her.

Eh, if they weren’t part of it the person in the screenshot wouldn’t be citing Elf Waifu’s suffering when you die as a reason to not want the Elf Waifu.

Just because considering it’s 4Chan the original reason for wanting the Elf Waifu was probably “I could have a Legal Loli Waifu,” doesn’t mean they can’t be taught to not be psycho incels.

Anon's making it sound like this isn't something that's been touched on many times before in fantasy. They even used an image of Marcille, a character traumatized by the loss of her human father and living in fear of the knowledge that she will lose everyone else around her too.

    • starman2112@sh.itjust.works ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

This post is about Marcille’s motivation in Dungeon Meshi. Like this is literally her reason for going into the dungeon, she wants to unify the races’ lifespans so that she won’t be forced to outlive the people she loves

      Dunmeshi spoilers

This is exacerbated by the fact that >!she’s a half-elf, so her lifespan is like half that of an elf, but still more than twice that of any other human race. She’ll either outlive her loved ones by hundreds of years, or be outlived by them by hundreds of years.!<

      source
    • Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Alternatively, it’s 4Chan so the odds the OP this post was responding to was asking “Why wouldn’t you want a Hot Elven Waifu?” are also pretty high specifically because of the “I could have a Legal Loli Waifu” angle.

It makes sense only to people who believe in delusional “forever after” and in the idea that once you loved( or been with someone) that’s it ! That person is not allowed and can never love some else.

What a pile of reduced monkeigh logic.

    source
    • Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Even if you believe that, the idea that losing you would be such torture as to outweigh any good of being with you is utter bullshit. And even if you think it would, you don’t get to make that choice for someone else!

My wife recently got diagnosed with a small tumor on her pituitary gland. Her health already wasn’t the best, and she’s a week shy of exactly 5 years older than me. So I already knew I was most likely going to outlive her. But even if you told me I was going to outlive her by literally hundreds of years you would never catch me choosing not to be with her for however long I get. I’d choose to be with this woman every single time.

If she died tomorrow it would destroy me. But it’s precisely because it will hurt me so much that I’m going to cherish every single moment I have with her for as long as I have her. And when the time does come to say goodbye I’m going to live on carrying those memories with me for however much longer I have before I join her wherever it is we go when this is all over. Because I know that she would want me to be happy in the time I have without her.

      source
      • uSeRnAmE396@lemmy.world ⁨12⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Sorry to hear this and I empathise with your situation. ‘Loss’ is a difficult emotion

I completely agree with “we don’t get to make that choice for someone else”. This shall always be true.

But if someone implies : that loving someone is just a one-time thing in life, like in a one-time use then… this is their choice …

But i’m not bound to this… and in fact i view this as very, very, limited point of view and existence. It’s just a social construct that some people pick it up to give meaning to their existence.

Fine … ‘you do you’ …
