We did, they’re called emojis.
Gen z seems to have figured that out, too. They use emojis like punctuations, in much the same way we use lol. I was annoyed by it at first but I got used to.

I’m pretty sure Millennials never caught onto that because we either used emoticons, or were traumatized into thinking that emojis were somehow “girly”. So the lol or lmao ended up being the way to show emotion/sentiment.

I use “haha” when I actually laugh out loud, since “lol” just means “I’m not being serious” or “I’m mildly amused right now” these days, even though it is literally an abbreviation for laughing out loud.

I’ve literally been called out on using lol on Lemmy. Probably ~3 months back or so?
I forget how I responded, but it definitely would’ve had lol in it a few times just for emphasis.
Guys, we’re on knockoff reddit, not a debate forum. Have a few lols when pointing out hypocrisy or incorrect shit with citations is just the creme of the lol crop.

I preferred emoticons. There are too many emoji. Too many of them are meaningless. No matter what platform you’re on, you have to SLAM typing to a halt to go into a separate menu to pick one out.
