My landlord is a multibillion dollar corporation and my fridge is 32 years old.

If that fridge is still happily running then be happy, they literally don’t make them like that anymore.

It leaks water on the floor, causes my power bill to go up and grows mildew around the seals weekly…

Have you sincerely and cheerfully wished your multibillion dollar corporation landlord a happy and prosperous birthday, and have you gratefully and bravely remitted no less than three (3) months of your (useless to you) money?

      No?

      You’re what’s wrong with society.

Do NOT be kind to your landlord.

My landlord lost their house gambling so I offered them to rent one of my rooms at discount as a roommate.

Now whenever my rent increases due to cost of living, I increase their rent due to cost of living.

We are in a sick perpetual cycle and both our rents went up 5000% yesterday. We are comrades in this pain and promised to protect each other if liver selling operation goes wrong.

It’s a hateful bond, an adversarial friendship, and an expensive survival. Somebody please help!

    • derpgon@programming.dev ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Now that I think about it, if a circle exists somewhere where A rents to B, B rents to C, and C to A (make it as long as needed, of course), one increasing the rent leads to a perpetual rent increase until one of them collapses? Would be funny to see tbh.

        source
      • Fluke@feddit.uk ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Well, imagine this, but A is also loaning the money to C to keep the circle going, and you’ve got state of the “AI” market.

And people are yet still convinced “it’s not a bubble”.

Oh it gets better. The hurricane that ripped through Georgia a year or so back ripped up our fence. They wanted us to keep it there until they could find someone to put it up.

It was rotted and no one wanted to do it…they were gonna keep a rotted fence on the ground in our yard.

I don’t know about you, but Georgia got some bad snakes. I broke that bitch down, built a fire pit and burned it. They can marinate my family jewels if they think I’d keep a snake den in my back yard with my 6 yr old.

My last landlord put a clause in the lease that made me responsible for any sewer line repairs. I was like what the fuck is this? He said it was because tenants tend to flush shit you shouldn’t flush and that’s why sewer lines need to be replaced. To his credit (sort of) he took that out when I said no way I was signing. He was a member of that species of landlord that just puts whatever into leases because some people will sign anything.

The one thing he did that I liked which surprisingly does not seem common in rental leases was to require me to purchase and maintain renter’s insurance. Not because he gave a shit about my stuff being stolen or lost in a fire (which renter’s insurance covers) but because it’s a source of coverage in the event of damage caused to the place by the renter. It was only like $15 a month so hardly a big deal.

      source
      • COASTER1921@lemmy.ml ⁨2⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Every apartment I’ve ever lived in requires renters insurance. It’s so cheap that I’d argue it’s a good idea to have regardless of whether required by the building. So many things are out of your control (floods, fire, weather damage, etc) and it’s good to know that with the insurance you’d at least he able to get new stuff to maintain a similar living situation.

How much would you expect back if you gave someone a loan for $500,000.00 after 3 years, 5years, 10years?

    Calculations:

    After 3 years: 500,000×(1+0.0430⋅3)=500,000×1.129=564,500.
    After 5 years: 500,000×(1+0.0438⋅5)=500,000×1.219=609,500.
    After 10 years: 500,000×(1+0.0468⋅10)=500,000×1.468=734,000.

Ok so 64,500/3/12=$1792.00 would be your fair monthly rent since the landlord would put that money away and expect a return for that investment.

For 5 years it would be $3,042.

For 10 years it would be $6500. Clearly a better investment.

Except that when they get your rent they can put that money into the investment system again and get much more money overtime.

First month say 1000 (super cheap tent on a cardboard box behind a Wendy’s).

Second month 2040 assuming 4% per month.

    $41,000 after 3 years, $67,000 after 5 years, 170,000 after 10 years at 4.3% APR.

If the rent was 3000, that would be $510,000 after 10 years. This is not a good investment if you paid $900,000 for that house. You want the return in 5 years so the rent would be $5708.00 per month.

And that right there is why our rent is so expensive. We are basically ensuring the profit of a nice steady percentage to some investor. Now, if you didn’t ever invest in the house, your house would eventually become land. So you do want to pay to keep that thing looking good, but maybe not 4.3% per month?

My old landlord was a Vietnamese family who built an apartment complex for a family business instead of running a restaurant. I respected them, they kept the place in running order.

I feel like “landlord” is an easy group to hate, but some renters are absolutely filthy gross and I have seen what landlords sometimes deal with. No room for nuance here, of course, but how you do things matters a lot.
