Or at least take me down, im cool with either 🤙

They’ve embraced open-source by sequencing the virus’s DNA and providing detailed and simple instructions for anyone to reproduce it at home!

COVID-19 wasn’t the next Spanish Flu, until it was.
I HOPE it’s just another SARS/MERS thing, but it’s too early to tell.
mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 days ago
Covid was a SARS virus tho?? literally SARS-CoV-2
Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 days ago
It’s a known virus, so seems like a nothingburger to me (except a handful of people dying, that’s of course horrible).
WoodScientist@lemmy.world 2 days ago
There are plenty of known viruses that we don’t worry about simply because we’ve been lucky enough to keep them contained in very localized areas. But an epidemiologist could rattle off a whole series of viruses that they would say, “if this ever gets out and blows up, we are fucked.”
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 days ago
It wasn’t the Spanish Flu even at its worst (roughly a third the mortality rate with a much faster and farther reach absent any properly quarantining).
Much like with the AIDS epidemic or the Ebola outbreak, Hauntavirus has a significantly slower rate of spread and avoidable vector for transmission, but a significantly higher mortality rate.
It’s scary for different reasons.

You sure you’re not talking about regular hantavirus? Most strains can’t transmit from person to person; they require vectors such as mice and other rodents. But the variant people are worried about is capable of spreading directly from person to person. Cruise ships and plains may make it easy to transmit viruses that require close personal contact. But they’re not exactly known for their rodent infestations.

Intravenous bleach when?

You need better YouTube subs, cuz all of mine that are talking about it are saying how much of a non-issue it is
lastlybutfirstly@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Mine aren’t saying anything about it at all.
echodot@feddit.uk 2 days ago
Every time somebody complains about YouTube it’s always because they don’t actually have any subscriptions and they’re just doing the front page.
The front page of YouTube is indeed rubbish, no one should be looking at that.
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Are they saying it in a gravely voice while extolling the virtues of an all-meat diet?
Passerby6497@lemmy.world 2 days ago
You must be thinking about the people telling you how bad it will be in one breath and trying to sell you ivermectin in the next

I think the point is there aren’t so many butts on Lemmy spreading misinformation. Of course there are a lot of idiots on here, but their ability to post BS is limited.
python@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I barely heard anything about it, except for the fact that it has something to do with rodents. Does anyone know if that includes domesticated rodents (specifically in Central Europe) and whether the virus dies when frozen? Cause I have plenty of contact with frozen rats, mice, african soft fur rats and rabbits atm.
echodot@feddit.uk 2 days ago
Viruses usually survive quite fine when frozen. Viruses aren’t really alive so in order to “kill” them you’re looking for something that will destroy their DNA.
You want something like high heat, UV, or bleach. Also just stuff like wearing face coverings and gloves should be enough, after all I am assuming you’re not planning to eat them.
Mika@piefed.ca 3 days ago
But seriously, why weren’t they properly quarantined? We learned nothing from the previous case.
shneancy@lemmy.world 3 days ago
afaik, some people got off the cruise before they realised there was an outbreak - and it’s those who are currently the issue
carpelbridgesyndrome@sh.itjust.works 2 days ago
Long incubation period + passengers ending their cruises in different places. Once they figured out it was spreading on the ship it was quarantined but by then several people had already left.
somethingsnappy@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Joking, or don’t understand cruise ships?

What YouTube videos are you watching? Because nobody in my sub list is fucking insane.
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 days ago

Tried to screenshot the insane shit YouTube showed me on the default feed, but I’m getting a “You can’t take screenshots of YouTube” warning through my phone.

Oh is there a new world ending virus? Perhaps trump will suggest injecting bleach again, you never know, it could be a good thing.

I remember a hantavirus scare back in the 90s, this too shall pass
mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 days ago
you remember the sars scare back in the 90s too?
enphurgen@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I remember the killer bees that never came as well. The only thing that seems to remain constant is that people like to spread fear and overreact.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 days ago
depends on which one, the hantavirus from korea is the scary one, sin nombre in the states is the next most virulent one.
halfeatenpotato@sh.itjust.works 2 days ago
Idk if I can technically call him my father-in-law because he died before I had the chance to meet/know him, but my husband’s dad caught hantavirus in the very early 90s. It slowly killed him - deteriorating his motor skills and his mind along the way. My husband was his driver at 15 because his dad couldn’t walk by that point. He reached a point where he frequently made some pretty out-of-character and erratic/destructive decisions that negatively impacted their family in a big way. He eventually committed suicide when my husband was 16.
From everything I’ve heard about my father-in-law prior to hantavirus (and before it wreaked havoc on his body and mind), he was a brilliant, hard working, dedicated, and warm man. Sounds like he was a kickass dad too.
The scare was for a good reason. It’s not transmissable from human to human, but it’s a good reminder to be FUCKING CAREFUL AROUND RATS AND ANY AREAS WHERE RATS MAY HAVE BEEN.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 2 days ago

The alleged Reddit reaction is the only one actually mirroring the virology community. Good job, Reddit amalgam someone made up.
