Honestly, no idea. Maybe it could be a test for future scams, maybe it could be a social experiment, or maybe its just a troll.

I’ll admit, the thing that made me go from Kbin to Lemmy was seeing tons of spam on unmoderated places. (Not blaming the admin for not being able to manage the site in that particular case, they had more pressing issues.)

Perhaps a way to limit how fast new instances are able to post and tools to identify those causing spam

That won’t stop anyone. Just spin up 50 instances and let them sit for a while until they’re not so new anymore.
Then when you need one, grab one off the shelf that’s been riping for a while.
It’s only a bump when they get started.

The person and the background look too similar between photos for this to be AI. The person behind the scam probably searched the web, and stole this poor person’s photos. Judging from the poor quality, I’d date it around ~2008
