Food or fighting it’s all pleasure That is your opinion and I disagree. I don’t think this country (or most of them) have enough arable land for everyone to convert entirely to meat free and from my understanding. Also, it’s worth pointing that it’s not a simple morality issue either as it would require radically changing the world economy and food distribution. Especially in impoverished nations.
Always with the dog examples huh. I don’t eat them because in the west we view them as social/companion animals. I’m sure if I came from a culture that was different, endured hardships(like starving to death) or even just viewed them differently, maybe I would too.
That obviously can’t be what you mean, as it is not compassionate, kind, or merciful to kill someone when they don’t need to die. What do you mean by it? You know what I mean, without undue suffering or cruelty. You would consider it humane if we killed them at the end of their natural lifespan by that logic.
Unless you have some way to rapidly switch billions of dollar of farming industry to purely plant based industries? Not to mention replacing the jobs/livelihoods of the entire farming sector. I think society is slowly drifting toward eating less meat naturally (although quicker would be better environmentally). I suspect however the a small token market for it will always exist and the less there is, there more likely that it can be done in a humane manner.
Anyway this will be it for me, frankly the continual moving on from what the points I address to ask questions feels pretty sealion-y. Add that to the fact that when I also addressed your examples in relation to feedlotting you say I’m “all over the place”. You also seem to not genuinely want to understand why people eat meat (which should be obvious when you gave your absolutist stance in the op). Then also continually trying to return to dogs for some reason makes it pretty convincing that you aren’t here for the reason stated in the OP and instead are here to attempt change people opinions in a disingenuous, guilt tripping manner. Anyway all the best. I would put it to you that if you don’t want omnis in the vegan comm posing their opinions as questions, interrogating and passively accusing members of that community; you should probably refrain from the same behaviour.
- Comment on Why aren't vegan? 2 weeks ago:
Yes they do, I don’t think I implied otherwise, my point was the way they live and are killed is different. The reason for doing so is a factor too. E.g. dogs that are killed in illegal dog fighting aren’t eaten after, whales, etc. Cattle in feedlots can be reasonably expected to live humane lives and killed in a humane manner. The same cannot be said for any of the cases that you mentioned. Hence my elaborating on them for the sake of comparison.
I’d be aghast if you were doing so recreationally. If we lived in a culture that ate dogs, probably not, depending on the manner in which they’re raised and killed. This sort of stuff is what I’m referring to feeling like “guilting” as it’s probably not super common for people who eat meat to be fond of boltgunning puppies.
I mean I’m happy to discuss whatever you like; but my participation here is to answer the original question and provide insight as why I eat meat and address common point vegans discuss I.e. the condemning factory farming remark.
- Comment on Why aren't vegan? 2 weeks ago:
I can see that, more to point out current social norms or “tradition” as you put it. If the majority of people are currently omni and they have not external reason to change; they won’t. Psychosocial factors/status quo might be what I’m appealing to?
Well I’d assert that those cases are not all equal. Cattle in feedlots probably don’t live the same lives dogs that fight each other; often to the death. Whales are important to their ecosystem (and we could fish them into extinction). It’s also just super wasteful to kill whales for oil/food when we have other ways of sourcing those materials. Elephants can practically never be sufficiently well kept by a circus (except a wealthy company maybe) and are incredibly social animals so there’s no way in my mind to keep them in a circus in a humane way.
I think the main problem veganism/vegos face is pr/marketing. For example, I feel like far more people would become meatless for environmental reason rather than comparing “modern” farming to dog fighting. Which feels more like guilting than anything and puts the receiver immediately on the defensive. Factory farming and abusive farming practices in general can get fucked though.
- Comment on Why aren't vegan? 2 weeks ago:
I’ve seen sites similar (except specifically for abuse cases) and read “eating animals”. Found the feedlot I worked at on the site you linked and they have no record (fortunately). No one really “needs” anything apart from that required for survival. However, the majority of humans are omni so making product that appeal to them will result in more of us considering moving beyond meat.
I’ve got no problem with vegans or people being meat free, I respect it. That said, the majority of humans are and have been omni since recorded history so it’s not as simple as “just” not eating meat. The gut biome transition alone is enough to put off a lot of people, even if it passes somewhat quickly.
- Comment on Why aren't vegan? 2 weeks ago:
Grew up with (and later worked on) a family operated feedlot. From being inducted/fed in the feedlot to the process of being sent to the abattoir. Occasionally, we’d have butchers out to the feedlot for when the owners had their own beast killed for food.
So I’d say a bit of desensitisation but also they don’t have too bad a life in the feedlot (imo obviously) and when they’re killed, at least on site, it’s over before they know what’s happened. Feedlot has cameras around the stock camp and feedlot in general. For security but also, mishandling cattle will get you sacked. Electric prods are no longer allowed except for particular unruly cattle. Mishandled cattle are stressed cattle, and stressed cattle are more likely to get injured (or even hurt themselves). If these cattle die or have to be euthanise it’s a loss; so it’s a business decision more than moral one.
Can’t speak to other feedlots or types of farming (excluding planting). Dated vegans before; enjoy meat replacements even if I’m still Omni and generally try to reduce my meat consumption for health and environmental reasons.

- Comment on If Australians knew the whole truth about Indigenous history, Lidia Thorpe’s royal outburst would not have been a shock | Celeste Liddle 4 weeks ago:
Last year, Australia showed how unengaged and racist this country remains by refusing to insert an Indigenous advisory voice
Right those are the option. Either you voted yes or you’re unengaged and racist.
If I were, like so many others, to believe what it is I have heard and seen since Thorpe took to the floor, I would be convinced she had broken through the barricades, thrown open the doors, stormed to the front and then proceeding to call his majesty everything under the sun. I certainly wouldn’t get the impression that she, as an Australian senator, attended an event she had been duly invited to, engaged in an act of peaceful resistance by turning her back as God Save the King played and then proceeded to yell a few hard truths about the Crown and the history of this country
This writing is just floundering and bordering on dishonest. While I agree too many people are clutching pearls about it, yelling at the King is what it is. Other First Nations members and elders have stated their disapproval for obvious reasons. While the reactionary “shock” about is tiring this side of it is as well. As pointed out it wouldn’t be with the crown these things would negotiated anyway. It would be with the commonwealth/parliament. So yelling at the king during this sort of ceremony about it is not only inappropriate due the event but due to it being the wrong person to bring this to.

Nah I agree. I also have to remind myself of similar when talking about artist I don’t like. You gotta give props where they’re due and I think her sales number do a lot of that talking. I don’t like most of her music either, won’t deny I loved blank spaces but have been aware of Swifties for a minute. Again however, any shade I throw at the first coworker who I’m thinking of I can’t do without mentioning it was over a decade ago. Swift has had a growing, nearly fervent fan base since. As “pop” as it may be, which I don’t generally like, if I thought it was that shit why don’t I go out and make said shit and become a millionaire?
- Comment on 'People have chosen to distort what I said': ASIO boss Mike Burgess on Gaza visas 2 months ago:
I kinda appreciate ASIOs current stance of talking more to the public where they can. I can’t be the only one that said “fucking finally” when they called for people to tone down the internet discourse. Even if it is a decade or so overdue.
- Comment on Would it count in basketball, if a player found themselves directly under the hoop, threw the ball up through the hoop from underneath, and the ball fell back down, again through the hoop? 2 months ago:
No it won’t be counted as it’s considered a ‘violation’. Ref will blow the whistle stating as such and the ball will be handed over to the defending team.
RULE 9 - VIOLATIONS AND PENALTIES Section 6. Travel, Kick, Fist, Through Basket from Below A player shall not travel or run with the ball, intentionally kick it, strike it with the fist or cause it to pass through the basket and enter the cylinder from below.

I thought it might have been how the original post was structured.
my colleagues and I would spam them with applications and phone calls informing them of just how stupid they were being with that requirement.
Now that is a feel good story everyone can enjoy lmao, too right.
- Comment on Why is DNS often joked about in the I.T. Industry? 3 months ago:
You picked up the bitchiness of my post but not the entire subtext. My point is when using the same quote we’re able came to quite different conclusions. One assuming the IT guy did know but merely likened it to “magic” in order to not explain it to a lay person, for whatever reason. Another assuming they don’t know a key concept and are therefore a complete failure.
And yes, I can say someone who works in IT who doesn’t know what DNS is, is a failure.
Like even a trainee? A student? A failure in what way. It just feels like a weird put down. Presumably everyone has to learn it at some point as they begin their IT career. So the idea that they’re a failure until then and that DNS is the bar, is a peculiar world lens in my view.
Sorry if it hurts their feelings but maybe they’re not yet familiar with a concept called qualifications, credentials, experience, expertise, knowledge, skills… you know, silly old fashioned stuff like that.
Feelings aren’t really the point, the unnecessary extremes like labelling people “complete failures” is closer to it. You can give objective and concise criticism, which is more than capable of “hurting feelings” by the way, and not seem to be intentionally abrasive in doing so. Like the second quote you can surely see especially after the ellipsis, it’s condescending right? Unless you believe we live in an age of zero qualifications, credentials or knowledge. If so, you understand that apologising for hurting feelings prior is clearly performative and how that is perceived.
Also, I’m disappointed to inform you but all of that “old fashion” stuff is very much still the case. Hell weren’t there articles on lemmy about older generations agreeing that younger generation face an absolutely ridiculous job market? The “must have 5 years experience in a 2 year old language” memes? I don’t think it’s an age issue, generational maybe. I’m not middle age but I’m definitely not that young either. It unfortunate how often inter-generational shit flinging occurs.
- Comment on Why is DNS often joked about in the I.T. Industry? 3 months ago:
Your quote to me sounds like someone who’s making a joke out a subject they don’t want to have to explain to a lay person.
Interesting you went to branding them complete failures over it though. Right after comparing IT workers to fucking doctors lmao.
Jesus. In my day you had to be an expert and know your shit. I guess nowadays it’s just free for all?
Truth is society as a whole started coasting about a decade after you joined the work force. We figured, fuck it Andy’ll take care of it.
- Comment on We played Valve’s secret new shooter: Deadlock 3 months ago:
I’ll have to see if I’ve got a copy of an NDA I signed for play testing but that’s what I would have thought. It would be provisional on your participation not on an agreement like old school EULAs. As someone else pointed out it seems to be in closed beta or some form of early access, so maybe Valve won’t care and it won’t come back on them.

I’m- RIP. Taken out by Valve legal team already, everyone bail.
- Comment on We played Valve’s secret new shooter: Deadlock 3 months ago:
And I’m not under NDA. I have signed no contracts, made no verbal agreements; I haven’t even clicked through a EULA. This message does pop up when I launch Deadlock, but I didn’t click OK; instead, I hit the Escape key and watched it disappear.
I’m not a lawyer but I sure hope the writer of this checked with a lawyer before posting because that does not sound right.
- Comment on First overseas trip with my girlfriend – Any tips to make It our best trip? 4 months ago:
Honestly, expect shit to go wrong. Sounds like you’ve gotten all the important shit done. You’ve got a plan, you’ve been working towards it for a while and seems like your partner is into it as well.
We had a similar trip a few years back, first time overseas for some of us. Lots of planning and preparation went into it. Then our trip planner fucked up one of our bookings in Paris. Meaning we almost missed out on doing some tour that ended on the Eiffel Tower. A couple of times trains were missed/delayed.
The only times the trip strayed away from being the fantastic trip it was is because people let small (and sometime not so small, to be fair) disappointments or missed expectations turn into high stress/anxiety events. You’re going overseas, shit may go wrong; be ready for it and be cool with it (while also making sure you have travel insurance). Also take time away to do shit yourselves that the other may not want to do and always have set meeting times and locations to check in if you do.

You know those aren’t the members I’m referring to. I haven’t referred to you by the wrong pronoun or misgendered you. I simply haven’t capitalised non-gendered possessive/adjective pronouns. You think these should be capitalised due to identifying as a goddess. As someone else mentioned it reeks of co-opting trans issues. Anyway, given you’ve reported me, I’m going to leave it here.

Yes, and as per the blog the other user linked people have a habit of posting mediums links under the guise of providing supporting information. Given you made a claim “x proves y” you and other people who post medium links like this probably know “but here’s a link to my blog that is also just my opinion” probably doesn’t hit the same.

zero context and dubious evidence.
That’s largely my problem with it too. Reads more like tabloid shit, I can’t get over citing politicians namelessly without invoking the word anonymous anywhere. How it isn’t required for them mention that the opinion was given under condition of anonymity is rubbish.
so my opinion is questionably neutral.
Yeah that’s why my opinion hasn’t ever been much braver than “it never should have gotten to this point” on the matter. I don’t live there, haven’t been in the Palestinian or Israeli shoes and certainly am not informed enough on the matter. Definitely not enough to comfortably give it on record, in public and potentially off the cuff like that.

I see how I misunderstood the context but it change the overall point slightly. It’s an odd response for a politician and evasive given she felt strongly enough to cross the floor. Given she’s a member of parliament and votes on issues raised in parliament, it’s not out of her hands, evidently. The article goes on to assert she had likely planned her vote and hadn’t raised the issue with the PM. Your last paragraph I largely agree with either way, ‘labour sources’ pffft. Other labour MPs will say whatever shit about her because she stepped out of line with the party.
I just read she quit the party which is unfortunate and even worse looking for labour.

One MP told the ABC they were alarmed that the senator was distancing herself from the decision and assigning it to a higher order.
I get where this post is coming from and it’s a pretty average article out of ABC. That said, if you cross the floor for something, something that hasn’t been done in labour for a long time (apparently). I would hope you have a more well thought out and coherent answer than “it’s outta my hands”. It seems to me this is the issue the article is raising. Not the fact that she’s religious or cited it in her politics, though personally I think the latter should be avoided.

You’d have to ask a physicist. I would be surprised if you couldn’t make other liquids “wet”. The solid analogy helps with conceptualising an interface, one material on another. I suppose you could make water wet, by freezing a block and then splashing said block with water but that doesn’t equate to it being wet, if that makes sense.
- Comment on gotdamn 4 months ago:
It threw me at first too. Helps to think of it as wetness being an interaction between a liquid and solid. Water makes things wet, it’s isn’t itself wet.
