Even if it was true, would it be worth it? Guy must have had to miss out on so many milestones in his and his loved ones lives.
Never believe the hype.

Some people don’t miss a day of work in 27 years, specifically to avoid those milestones and their family. Who’s to say this guy hasn’t been playing the long game? LOL
suodrazah@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Maybe he only worked the Wednesday afternoon shift.
chrisbit@leminal.space 3 months ago
It’s funny to me that the blue tick has gone from meaning ‘oh good, this is at least coming from a verified source’ to ‘this is almost certain to be alt right bullshit’.
uis@lemm.ee 3 months ago
Alt right supports retirement? What’s next? Alt right supporting communism?
chrisbit@leminal.space 3 months ago
I was more getting at the headline being worded to imply the corporation is doing the ‘gifting’ here.
MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 3 months ago
Never missed a day in 27 years? So he either worked around food while sick or he’s Unbreakable.
Soulg@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
Guaranteed the former. Don’t blame him though, the system is designed to force that.
MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 3 months ago
I know. It must be hell working a low pay job in the US.
VirtualOdour@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
He should have used his available sick days, what’s the point of fighting for rights if no one uses them?
His foolish stoicism did nothing but benefit a corporation, endanger the public, and make it less acceptable for his colleges to take sickdays when required.

Wall Street: I don’t see the issue?
Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 months ago
The issue is that BK wasted money on a gift basket.

Don’t worry, they’re gonna write it off on their taxes so it didn’t actually cost them anything

fuck, who can i trust in this world if not a twitter account with a blue checkmark?
ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Why would you distrust someone who has $8?
Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I mean…there’s a LOT to take in here. First off, I see no evidence that Burger King ever claimed to have given him 400K. I see no reason why Burger King WOULD give an employee 400K for not missing work. Yes, it’s a crazy thing that he didn’t miss 27 years, but what would make people expect a min wage job to give a 400K bonus. The guy in the picture doesn’t look like a manager. He looks like a regular employee.
The person claiming this is @TheBestFigen. And who is that? Why are they reporting this? You don’t trust random sources on twitter for news.
Not that traditional news outlets are much better at verifying their sources, but still.
Good on the daughter for raising 400K, but I suspect theres even more to this story. What was the gofundme for?
“Hey, my dad is a very reliable Burger King worker. Give us money please!”. I don’t think anyone would donate to that. Instead, I suspect he has a medical issue. And people see a Burger King employee who’s unable to pay medical bills, and THEN I could see people donating. That I would understand. That makes sense. Well, it doesn’t make sense that our medical system is set up in a way that makes it come to this, but once you accept it IS this way, it makes sense that people have empathy.
But none of what I just said is whats being presented. This is being presented as “BOO BURGER KING!!! CORPORATE BADDIES!!! WON’T EVEN GIVE A GUY 400K!!!” when in reality…why would they?

From the GoFundMe (not hard to find):
Hi, My name is Seryna. The man in that video is my father. He has worked at his job for 27 years and yes, he has never missed a day of work. He originally began working at this job as a single father when he gained custody of me and my older sister 27 years ago. Then as our family grew and he remarried, he continued to work there because of the amazing health insurance that was provided through this employer because it was unionized. This got all four of his daughters through high school and college with full healthcare coverage.
My dad continues to work there, because though he does look young, he is coming up on retirement age and leaving would cost him his retirement. In no way are we asking for money or is he expecting any money but if anyone feels like blessing him he would love to visit his grandchildren.
Exusia@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I don’t understand. Leaving would “cost” his retirement? Why would he lose it by retiring? Is there a milestone like X years he needs to hit? If so why not stay (if it’s only 3 years, for example). It doesn’t mention him being sick or unable other than age. Why does retiring not use his retirement??
FarFarAway@startrek.website 3 months ago
Wait, Burger King was unionized 27 years ago? Health insurance? What! How come I never heard of this? How come nobody asked me to join. WTF, I feel jipped.
GeneralVincent@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Yes 400k would be surprising. But if the claim is true and he never missed a day in 27 years of working there, and Burger King gave him a goodie bag? That’s on the other end of surprising, like that’s an incredible feat and seriously impressive loyalty to the company. It should be rewarded with something a little more substantial imo
theneverfox@pawb.social 3 months ago
Why? Fast food is just a starter job for high schoolers /s
BallsandBayonets@lemmings.world 3 months ago
Hey now, that goody bag included literally dozens of dollars worth of Burger King coupons!

Idk but they have more than a million followers. If someone with that reach posts misleading information it’s good to correct it.

As if it was about thr worker, it’s about the great gift from Burger King (that never happened)
coffee_with_cream@sh.itjust.works 3 months ago
Off topic, but I feel like I hopped timelines to where people started using, “gifted” instead of “gave.” When did that start?
MirthfulAlembic@lemmy.world 3 months ago
About 400 years ago. Is this a really sly way of revealing you’re a vampire?
iknowitwheniseeit@lemmynsfw.com 3 months ago
It’s weird, but also more specific. You can give someone a haircut, give someone guff, give someone herpes, but you wouldn’t say “gifted” in those contexts.
UmeU@lemmy.world 3 months ago
My ex wife gifted me some herpes.
Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 3 months ago
Not really, it’s just laziness.
“He was given 50 bananas as a gift” is the correct way to say it
The “gifted” bit is just the magical English language and its ability to verbify anything into a verb

Can we NOT give corporations free advertisement?
Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Thanks for the best 27 years of your life. Here’s a Bic pen, some Burger King coupons, and a fancy eraser to show our gratitude.
edgemaster72@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Damn, a fancy eraser? I hope they still have those in 30 years when I retire (j/k either I’ll be dead by then or the concept of retirement will)
Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Better ask for your fancy eraser now then! Negotiate a bonus instead of a raise.

It isn’t in me to play that game. I’m not out here pretending success matters in any permanent way. They’re gonna scatter my ashes the same as anyone else’s and I’m not playing the game.
Now, if I could keep it all for eternity, I’d eat you guys alive to get it. I can’t though, so I’m just gonna ride the rock until I die and help any fellow sufferer I can who feels like I do about it.
My millionaire uncle is 500 times as miserable as me and he’s on vacation every weekend. I’m not running a race to nowhere.
But hey, you do you. If success means something to you, who am I to knock it just because I don’t get it? You don’t step on my nuts and I won’t step on yours. That’s how I roll.
Surp@lemmy.world 3 months ago
Not if I eat you first

Sadly, I won’t be eating there much anymore, as they have discontinued the 2 for 1 deal they used to have on whoppers. It was pretty much the only reason I went there anymore.
FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I tried their Impossible Whopper once hoping it would entice me to go there, but it was so ridiculously salty that I never went back. Also, their fries have always sucked.

He had paid time off, not a lot I’m sure even after 30 years the cap is probably low. Either way he still should have utilized those days while sick.

One of my coworkers just retired and they said she’d never missed a day in 47 years and I had the same reaction. Like, sorry, unless she’s secretly immortal, no fucking way did she go her entire adult life without getting sick even once, so thanks for bringing all your germs in, I guess. Hope the single sentence in the employee newsletter most people don’t read was worth it.
Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I was with my wife for 12 years before I ever saw her get sick. She would go “I don’t feel good, I’m going to go lay down” and an hour later she’d be all better. She has a crazy good immune system. Granted 12 < 47.
Juvyn00b@lemmy.world 3 months ago
I’ve taken several mental health days in my lifetime of work. I cannot imagine not having that as an option especially when you know you cannot mentally work.
IronKrill@lemmy.ca 3 months ago
He could also have had the weekend sickness. Happened a couple times with me now that I get sick Friday eve and am recovered 80-90% for Monday. Swear my body holds out on purpose so that I don’t get a day off.
