- Comment on Civilization 7 Outlines Crucial 1.1.1 Update as It Struggles to Compete on Steam Against Civ 6 and Even the 15-Year-Old Civ 5 2 days ago:
It also speeds up the games a bit. I simply do not have the time as a full adult to sink 10+ hours into a single game. I have actually finished every game of Civ 7 I’ve played so far, which has never happened with any prior Civ installments at my current playtime.
- Comment on What TV cancellation are you most upset by? 4 days ago:
Especially since it wasn’t a real cancellation, just “on indefinite hiatus” followed by “never coming back” almost five years later. The second season ending very much set up at least another season.

It’d be interesting for one of these games to have realistic planning and permitting mechanics.
“Your permit is delayed a week because the only person at City Hall who reviews them is on vacation.”
“To add a 6 ft fence, you need to go before the local planning board and convince them it’s necessary. You can reduce the height to 4 ft to avoid this.”
“The power company installed the meter on the wrong side of the house. They will relocate it for $10,000, and the earliest appointment is in three weeks. If they don’t, you have to relocate the HVAC unit and reroute the ductwork to account for that. Further, the electrician will charge $9,000 to adjust the wiring for the different meter location.”

There’s nothing wrong with having different preferences. It doesn’t have to be because someone has a worse or better attention span.
I personally do think the number of enemies that had to be killed should have been decreased. For me, it was mostly because it became comical sometimes that more guys kept coming out of the woodwork. After the fiftieth O’Driscoll you kill, you start to wonder if it’s a gang or a country’s military.
- Comment on Day 231 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games l've been playing until l forget to post Screenshots 3 weeks ago:
The gameplay is definitely way exaggerated because it would not be very engaging to get into one gunfight per chapter. I interpret these parts of many games symbolically—the amount of violence is to make a point. The game would be very short or really boring if it was realistic in that regard.
Arthur is a really complicated character who, despite being sometimes sympathetic, is ultimately not a good person. Even if you make only “good honor” choices, his story is still filled with points where he struggles to reconcile his actions with his beliefs. You wouldn’t want to live near a person like Arthur in reality, and he doesn’t like being that person.
RDR2 is ultimately a story about bad people struggling against other bad people. One group represents the lawless banditry that is dying out, while the other is the capitalist yoke that wears a nice suit. Lots of normal people get caught in the middle, and they usually suffer for it.
It succeeds for me because it still keeps the humanity in focus. Bad people are humans too. It does not absolve them, but it underscores the conditions that can manufacture them.

You spend the entire game moving from place to place because the gang keeps getting into too much trouble.

I think it is part of making government agencies ineffective to prove their ideology that these agencies should be abolished and replaced with private companies (or not at all). That way, they can say come election time, “See? Government can’t do these things well. We should eliminate these agencies.” Many people will forget they are also the reason the agencies are shitty.
They have tried this with underfunding them in the past mostly. This is a much more direct approach.

I just ran into this and had to use the workaround a couple days ago. They have great timing.
- Comment on Anon goes to therapy 2 months ago:
Yeah it’s one of the most challenging parts. The process of getting therapy is not set up to be easy for the kind of people who need it. Availability is the most limiting factor these days, so if you don’t get a good match, you could be stuck waiting months for another try. I got pretty lucky on my second try a few years ago, but my wife just gave up trying to find someone. It’s hard to blame her.
- Comment on Oh well... 2 months ago:
Seriously. You aren’t really managing your employees if they have to organize resource shortages for you. At my job, I tell my colleagues to just take time off and, like me, list a few close co-workers as people to contact in case of emergencies in their OOO reply. Nothing is life-or-death, so people can deal with waiting. It’s not like anyone is taking off months straight.
- Comment on Mafia: The Old Country - The Initiation Trailer 3 months ago:
Mafia 3 was my favorite. It’s definitely a departure from the first two, but it was a good melange of mafia and blaxploitation genre tropes. It also continued the tradition with a killer soundtrack. I never got tired of the radio.

I’m sure with control over all government branches again they’ll have the ACA completely replaced in no time. For real this time.
- Comment on Habits of Insects 4 months ago:
I don’t think he even attempted to do math. Someone asked him about it and said what the current budget was, and he just rectally sourced 2 trillion. I assume he said that because it’s big enough to sound huge, but less than half of spending so people don’t panic that everything will be cut.
It’s meaningless bullshit until he actually says specifically what will be cut. Republicans have been claiming they can cut huge chunks of spending for years, but it never materializes. They only know how cut government income without paying for it.

Also look. If many Americans saw a tomato slice on their burger that was not perfectly round but instead very irregular with lots of divots and varying shades of red, orange, and yellow, they’d bring it to the counter and say they got a rotten tomato.
A local supermarket some years ago put heirloom tomatoes right next to regular tomatoes for basically the same price one summer. They stopped selling heirloom tomatoes after that year because hardly anyone bought them. I did. They were incredible.

- Comment on Anons discuss PC vs console gaming 4 months ago:
Definitely agree. I used to be a KB/m only person, but have changed my opinion since using a controller for a while out of necessity. Some games are simply better with a controller.
Some are much worse. FPS will never translate well to controller for me. No idea how CoD people play on console. It feels like trying to throw a ball with someone else’s hand by manipulating their elbow.

How much parmesan did you grate over the brussel sprouts after they came out of the oven? Whatever amount it was, you didn’t do enough. Also if you forgot lemon zest, add some too.

- Comment on Most of the trick-or-treaters have been skipping my house, and I finally figured out why 4 months ago:
It takes a lot of the magic out of it. I’m sure a bit of this is rose-colored glasses, but it was a really neat experience as a kid. The entire neighborhood was out in the streets, people got to know their neighbors, and you felt like you were part of something. These days, it feels spooky due to how empty it is besides cars.
- Comment on Most of the trick-or-treaters have been skipping my house, and I finally figured out why 4 months ago:
Yeah, in my area trunk or treat is the main reason for no trick or treaters these days. It’s a very urban area, so getting a lot of candy on foot would be easy, but walking around a parking lot is way quicker. It seems to be what most parents prefer also, so I think it’s here to stay.
- Comment on Kill it with fire! 4 months ago:

- Comment on The Hunt For Gollum Won’t Be Two Films, But A Second LOTR Film Is Incoming, Philippa Boyens Confirms 5 months ago:
The first season was ok, and the second season was a little less than ok.
The show simultaneously feels very drawn out in some places and unrealistically quick in others, though usually the first. The different storylines seem completely unrelated or take too long to come together, and almost never in a way that’s satisfying.
There’s some good actors hamstrung by bad dialogue and uninteresting choices. For instance, one of the few intriguing choices they made in the first season is badass warrior Galadriel, and she spends almost the entire second season being aloof and ineffectual. To the show’s credit, season two does have a real climax near the end (looking at you House of the Dragon season two), but they built up zero tension leading up so you don’t really care much.
They also fell for the really big trap in adapting this age onto the screen: there’s too many elves, and they’re boring. They need foils (Gimli to Legolas), yet Durin Jr. and young Elrond aren’t around each other enough for it to do anything.
It’s nice to look at though.
