Europe is actually more a collection of large islands that have temporarily decided to exist as a unified land mass because Africa and Asia are squeezing it from both sides (geologically speaking)
This makes so much more sense

Geologically speaking India and surroundings are also not Asia but a separate continent running into Asia creating the Himalayas
lauha@lemmy.world 3 days ago
But europe is a continent.
possessedfaxmachine666@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Europe is just a part of the Eurasian continent.
Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 days ago
Asia was named such by the Europeans, meaning something like ‘the land of the sunrise’ and thus referencing its Eastern position relative to Europe.
Etymonline cites a possible Akkadian origin for ‘europe’ meaning ‘to go down, set’, which would mirror the origin for the word ‘asia’.
In other words, Europe and Asia might literally mean ‘the western and eastern bit,’ making perfect sense.
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Thus reaulting in Eurasia being the setting and rising land, which is fitting because the sun certainly does do both things there from what I hear (I’ve only been to North America according to the tectonicists in this thread)
ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Whereas “East” just means “direction of the egg”
tetris11@feddit.uk 3 days ago
c. 1300, from Latin Asia, from Greek Asia, speculated to be from Akkadian asu “to go out, to rise,” in reference to the sun, thus “the land of the sunrise.” Used by the early Greeks of what later was known as Asia Minor; by Pliny of the whole continent.
blibla@slrpnk.net 5 hours ago
whereas europe means … wide face xd
Often explained as “broad face,” from eurys “wide” (see eury-) + ops “face,” literally “eye” (from PIE root *okw- “to see”). But also traditionally linked with Europa, Phoenician princess in Greek mythology. Klein (citing Heinrich Lewy) suggests a possible Semitic origin in Akkad. erebu “to go down, set” (in reference to the sun) which would parallel occident. Another suggestion along those lines is Phoenician 'ereb “evening,” hence “west.”

So, basically, East.

Continents are made up anyway. Some call it Eurasia.
emiellr@lemy.nl 1 day ago
Yep, no notes
ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
I fail to see why it should be asia centric.
Surely it makes more sense to call it Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe And A Bit North… :-)
majster@lemmy.zip 3 days ago
Yeah its called Eurasia. Some Russians are quite fans of this kind of thinking.

As a Russian, I’m always bewildered why everyone else seems to refer to Europe and Asia as separate continents. Like, y’all blind or something? Look at the map!
And if you think it’s about geology or something, nuh-uh. It’s just a random convention coming from ancient perceptions, and it is heavily wrong. Eurasia is a single continent, and always has been.
scoobford@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 days ago
Basically the idea was that the mountains caused Europe to develop mostly separately from Asia.
Tbh I always thought it was silly too. Continents have always been more vibes based than anything and unless we’re reverse engineering Victorian race science I don’t think there’s a compelling argument.
Bonifratz@piefed.zip 3 days ago
As a European, yeah, this does make more sense.

you mean north west asian? yea

south south east Asia: Austrailia

This is unironically true. You can call it Eurasia if you’re feeling charitable to the pale demons.
RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 2 days ago
I know the japanese and koreans are pretty pale but calling them demons is a bit much don’t you think?

There are seven continents.
Eurasia, Africa, America, Antarctica, Australia, Greenland and Zealandia.

Asia 2

Asia is Northeast Africa, extended edition.
Europe is North Africa, extended edition.
It also leads me to count 4 continents: Africa (or Afrasia/Afro-Eurasia), America, Australia, Antarctica.

This makes me think of that old Doctor Who episode where they’re in Pompeii, and anytime the Doctor or companion uses a Latin phrase, the locals get agitated and say things like “Hey! ME. NO. SPEAKIE. THE. CELTIC!”
Cute little quirk with the handwavey translation thing.

Sure, but aren’t continents defined by tectonic plates and not landmass?
TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Which will complicate things because there will be dozens of more continents.
protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 days ago
yes the chilean continent
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Not really, and even if it did it wouldn’t separate europe from asia, but it would put Japan and part of Siberia in North America, cut Africa in two, cut India and Arabia out of Asia, and trim off bits of both Americas in California, Central America, Chile, and Venezuela.
sangeteria@lemmy.ml 2 days ago
No but I think it’d be really funny if we started doing that

Iirc we have the ancient greeks to thank for the current distinction. They named Europe the region north of greece, and Asia the region west of Anatolia, and then eventually decided that their actual boundary should be the middle of the black sea

dan69@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Why can’t Middle East be middle Asia And Central Asia as is?
humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 days ago
Europe is politically a continent bounded by Urals? What is southern boundary? Is a mountain range a legitimate geological continental boundary?
Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 3 days ago
The best European invention was the Suez canal, preventing people from realising that Africa is also the same landmass.
I propose we dig a similar canal from the north of Russia to the Black sea to unambiguously become a continent. Some would argue Caspian sea is more appropriate, but come on: Connecting the Black sea to the White sea? That’s poetic.
This plan would cost trillions, benefit no one and have devastating consequences for millions of people. I will not be answering questions.

5ha99y@lemmus.org 3 days ago
Europe and Asia are the same continental mass but Africa is not. Africa is moving independent to the Eurasian continent and is even slowly producing a new continent at the horn of Africa. So yes, it’s true that Europe and Asia are the same continent but Africa is not. It is also slowly moving into Europe. That’s why the Alps exist.
Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Behold, the 16 continents:
Image
From Wikipedia.
You are of course free to define continent how you want, but I am free to prefer Afroeurasia over a North America that includes parts of Siberia and half of Japan.
rockerface@lemmy.cafe 3 days ago
India then should also count as a separate continent since it’s on a separate plate. It’s not clear cut.
MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
Actually, Europe is a large island group that just surfaced some 100 million years ago.
elephantium@lemmy.world 1 day ago
In the same vein, does the Kiel canal mean the Denmark is an archipelago instead of a peninsula + islands?
And the Panama canal is when America became two continents? :D
MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
America is also the same landmass. Just has some water inbetween.
rockerface@lemmy.cafe 3 days ago
I support this plan because it would also separate russia from Europe and give us in Ukraine as well as Baltics a great defensible threshold.
