Yeah. It used to all just come from ebaums world and Ian’s shoelace site.

I mentioned a meme I saw to a friend of mine and it turns out he doesn’t have social media at all. He just said “The mediocrity of it…” and we went back to talking about other stuff again.
He had a point.

Lemmy is the only social media I have, it’s a peaceful life.
Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
YouTube is my other social media and it’s getting stale quickly
Seimhe@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
Yes, but it’s very white and Anglo so it doesn’t feel like a “worldwide” web.
red_bull_of_juarez@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 hours ago
Your friend sounds like an snobbish ass. Just because something is offline doesn’t mean it’s not mediocre. There are many, many valid criticisms of social media. But when your friend mentions something they enjoy you don’t seem very nice when you tell them that what they enjoy sucks. Don’t yuck someone else’s yum.
gndagreborn@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
I don’t think that was at all the point the friend was making
Seimhe@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
We’re friends, though. We’re honest with each other. I want to know his perspective even when we diverge.
So if I love pizza and he hates it, I don’t want my friend to tell me with a coat hanger smile that he likes pizza too. I want to know how much he hates it with all the adjectives he can muster.

This kind of inability to accept others’ point of view is why I don’t connect with people much anymore.
When I was younger I had lots of friends who had differing opinions and we had the openness to say “that’s fucking stupid” with each other, explain why and still remain friends.
These days you can slip up just once with a minor non-conforming opinion and people become completely unhinged. And I simply can’t take only talking about surface level topics anymore.

you missed an opportunity to screenshot this from Reddit and post it here

I’m old enough to remember when the World Wide Web was so new it had to use the full URL to differentiate itself from established services like Telnet and Gopher.
snooggums@piefed.world 8 hours ago
Isn’t this post ironic, dontcha think?
It’s like raaaaaiiiiin…
I love the fediverse because it filters those screenshots down to the best ones. You all do great work!

Eh, ish. It used to be only four:
Something Awful
Ebaum’s World
YTMND
4 Chan
antonim@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
Umm actually we also had Lemon party. But plebs like you probably haven’t heard of it.
Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
I’ve heard of those, but never visited because I spent all of my bandwidth at zombocom
boonhet@lemmy.zip 3 hours ago
Didn’t frequent any of them, I had several forums I frequented though
Now most forums are dead
9point6@lemmy.world 8 hours ago
I mean they were some of the big ones, though digg, maybe newgrounds and even OG (no subreddits) Reddit was in the mix too
But you’re forgetting all the thousands of random phpBB/vBulletin/myBB/Invision/SMF forums run by passionate nerds with only around 20-30 other equally passionate nerds using them
cabbage@piefed.social 4 hours ago
I was hanging out on small phpbb forums and occasionally IRC. I didn’t use the internet in English back them though, which probably improved my experience quite a lot.
Something awful and YTMND I’ve heard about but I have no idea what they were, 4chan is a shit stain, and Ebaum I’ve never heard of before this comment. So clearly they were not that monopolizing.
PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 4 hours ago
There are Facebooks I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some 4channer, not for better
Some have E-baum and some remain
All these places had their moments
Geocities and friends, I still can recall
Zombo dead and some are living
In my life, I love Lemmy morenoob@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
For me it was:
Luelinks SA Oink forums
eyekaytee@lemmy.world 8 hours ago

Remember buying a “yellow pages style” book of what websites you could go to and half of them didn’t work? lol
