That’s actually fair, they don’t want people trashing their equipment.

I wonder what kind of message they zap to people’s phones when the lime bikes are dumped into rivers & lakes & dumpsters?
meekah@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
It would be kinda stupid to rent it to do that. I think most people who do that just pick it up when its standing around somewhere
Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
So make sure to just smash up all the abandoned ones littering the streets.

I live in Europe. I once completely crashed one, along with myself, due to a huge pothole. Even though it’s totally obvious what happened based on speed data alone, they never reached out to me about it.
Should be noted it was fully functional, just probably scratched, maybe the handlebar slightly misaligned.

I’m in Finland. We have pedestrian/bike paths that sometimes go under roads. Over here the underpass tunnels sometimes get flooded in the heavy rains.
In the Plague Years, I was on an app scoot when it was raining, noticed the underpass had water up to my ankles, so I said “YOLOoooo” out loud and pushed through. Even though the official app scoot company policy at the time was Will You Please Not Do That.
Hey, the scoot was completely fine! Received no complaints! You see, fleet vehicles like these are pretty sturdy compared to retail models. A little bit of water? No problem. I assume the scoots they have to fish out of the river, or find from under the snow banks when they melt in the spring, may have some mechanical problems, yeah.
DupaCycki@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
True, they are quite durable. And it makes perfect sense. Otherwise the companies would have to spend considerably more on repairs or replacements, and potentially go out of business. Though sometimes people overestimate this sturdiness (or more likely just don’t care). In Romania, or at least in Bucharest, it’s quite common to find rental scooters thrown in the river. Not sure if they’re able to survive it.

Impressive stuff no doubt, well done mate. And how did the scooter fare?

I have definitely jumped a curb with them and did not know they tracked this, thanks for the heads up… damn

Use virtual CCs and proxy emails and start learning some tricks
kungen@feddit.nu 2 weeks ago
They most likely track your IMEI and other such fun stuff, just so you’re aware.
Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 3 weeks ago
That's the plan! I was avoiding them, because fuck lime. Now I might try them for the same reason.

While we’re here … how do you go about removing the batteries from these things? (For academic purposes only, of course.)

Is this a rental thing or do you “own” the vehicle?
(Own is in quotations becsuse what you and I would consider to be ownership isn’t necessarily what the LAW says is ownership)
Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 2 weeks ago
Lime is one of those scooter share companies that dumped a bunch of electric scooters in city centers overnight with QR codes to use an app to pay to unlock and begin riding them
andros_rex@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Which you’d think would need some sort of permit or approval process? But it looks like you can just do whatever you want if you have the $$$
I’m absolutely sick of them. I get home from work at dick o’clock and always have to make sure there’s not one lying down in the middle of my parking spot.
Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
Sir, this is 2026.
You’re not even allowed to ride your own in the UK. At least not in public areas.
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 weeks ago
Huh. The chinese rideshare mopeds have a little speaker that begs you to stop violating traffic law and ride safely, but the literally only dock your score for trying to destroy the bike or abandoning it blocking traffic. You can steal 1 moped for every 100 rides and still maintain a perfect score.

bitjunkie@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Surely 100 rides would cost more than just getting your own scooter that didn’t have all the spyware built into it
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 weeks ago
100 20 minute rides is 31USD. They also sell the mopeds, 250-500 USD. The rental ones are limited to 16 mph tho. The real convenience is that you can grab one almost anywhere and leave it nearly anywhere so it integrates really well with other modes of transit.

Steal to keep?
Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 weeks ago
This one cool trick rideshare companies don’t want you to know.
spoiler
Its a joke, the penalty for destroying or stealing one is -100, but you get +1 for every ride, and your score can go over 100. In reality the company probably calls the cops if you lock it in your garage and won’t give it back or something.
