That was my instant take, yes. It wasn’t there before. But now they got a needle’s eye for all the camels to pass through.
Wappen@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I checked and apparently it was there before, there’s actually an interesting story behind it:
quora.com/Why-are-all-sides-of-the-Kaaba-differen…
So, the first time it was built (by Ibrahim or Abraham) it was much more rectangular. You see the small white wall at its side? That part was included in the Kaabah. Also it was about half as tall as it is now and the door was lower to the ground (like real doors) .
Then after many centuries, there was a flood (since Makkah is a valley). In the same time frame, there was a fire. Both of these and its age caused the structure of the Kaabah to be worn out. So, the people of Makkah, the Quraish tribe, decided to rebuild the foundations.
At this time, coincidentally, there was a shipwreck of a vessel at the nearby port city of Jeddah carrying a lot of building materials and engineers to build a church in Yemen. So, all the materials was being sold to the highest bidder and the engineers were willing to work (to get enough money to go back presumably).
The Quraish pooled their money and bought all the things they could collectively afford. They realized that there wasn’t enough material to cover all of the old foundation. So, they decided to make the design shorter and build a small wall to mark the rest of it in hopes that in the future they could build the rest of it when they got enough money and materials. They also built the door higher up perhaps to prevent floodwater from reaching it or to restrict access to the inside.

I’m kinda interested on the different frontplates and skins people will give their GabeCubes. I saw that valve had a e-ink front panel for development, though, they wouldn’t sell it.

Someone is going to make a skin for it that is just GabeN, and honestly I would do that too because it’s funny

The gag is funny, but even without it, pics like those never fail to make me giggle. Sheeple running around a black cube to worship some imaginary sky-friend. Even sheep sometimes stop to ponder 😁

Sheeple running around a black cube to worship some imaginary sky-friend.
Stupid idiots, gathering together in celebration of a shared philosophy that spans race, language, and over a millennium of social change. I can’t believe anyone would waste so much time and energy to visit an archeological touchstone and show even a modicum of awe.
The Kabba is going on my shit list right alongside the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the Hagia Sophia, and Tenochtitlan. Sheeple! SHEEPLE!

People be shaming others for connecting with a community that supports a regular routine of both daily, weekly, monthly, and annual routines with at least a small amount of support for illness and poverty and which bfocuses on a concept larger than any one of their single personal existences then wondering why they’re depressed. Like I struggle with joining a major organized religion or even a secular social community like a sports team or knitting group but at least I know that’s why I’m depressed. And the Muslims also specifically have a faith that supports strict hygiene practices, which I admire greatly.

This is still one of the most bizzare things I’ve ever seen in humans. Pure hivemind behaviour. Walking in circles like goalless ants (true phenomenom). The place itself just feels to dystipian, holy place surrounded by blatant corruption and capitalism, perfect religious milking machine.

Look, I happen to know what this is but I really hate posts that just assume everyone knows what they’re talking about.
So for everyone else: this is the newly announced Steam Machine, a gaming PC/console that will run SteamOS (Linux) and overall looks freaking awesome.

I just want to say that while it does run SteamOS (arch, btw) by default, Valve has explicitly said that you can run whatever OS you want and they don't care.

Good point, I edited that in :)

Ruthalas@infosec.pub 1 month ago
I believe that have swapped the Steam Machine in for the Kaaba at Mecca- the Islam holy site. The Kaaba is already a big black cube, so it works well.
