I have spent very less time on Debian compared to others on this thread. So I’m not very qualified to speak about this topic.
My silly observations
- No snap/Canonical nonsense. I don’t hate snap, but it’s not compatible with my workflow.
- Overall lesser number of processes OOTB compared to Ubuntu. So I can quickly find out if there is a stray process running via htop.
- Terminal operation/reboot seems way faster
- Slower update frequency, so no random feature changes
- Less RAM/disk requirement (Important in the post AI world)
Some quirks when coming from Ubuntu
- No sudo! You either have to install sudo/sudo-rs/doas. I went with doas
- Debian manages network differently (Not netplan)
- Lack of support from Nvidia if you work with AI. I don’t, so not a problem.
If you need to deploy a server with mainly docker workloads, just go with Debian. I have one last remaining Ubuntu server which I’ll replace one day.

Shifted to Debian from Ubuntu a few weeks back for my core infra. It could be a placebo but Debian feels way more snappy.
