After reading the news about Christa Pike, I found an article on Wikipedia listing a bunch of botched executions.
Since 2000, 5% of lethal injections have gone wrong in one way or another. That’s 17 botched injections in 26 years. That’s an unreasonably high failure rate for something that they have no intention of stopping.
How don’t they have a backup method? There must be someone around with a gun? Double tap just in case, even if the chemical method seems to work.
If you must execute people, at least have the decency to do it properly.
IMHO the entire injection procedure is to keep it “clean” and socially accepted. Very few people would be happy to see somebody being shot in the head, but seeing somebody “falling asleep” is much more “ok”. It looks less violent even though the end result is the same. Surviving a lethal injection and waking up again in that nightmare must be horrible.
The reality is that death penalty is cruel and more costly than keeping someone in prison for life, and this doesn’t even consider the human cost of executing an innocent. It just doesn’t make sense.
I had an assignment once related to the death penalty when i was in high school. I remember reading that lethal injection had the highest botch rate. Don’t remember what the least was, but I want to say it was hanging? Either way, it’s unreasonable to do anyway. Costs significantly more than life in prison.
There are a lot of hanging entries on the botched executions list, though in fairness, that’s because the list goes back several hundred years.
From what I can tell, you’ve got a 2/3 chance of a quick death by hanging. Rope too long, you’re getting decapitated. Rope long enough: quick neck break, goodnight sweetheart.
Rope too short you’re spending 20 minutes being strangled to death while people tug on your legs to try and break your neck.
Knowing my luck, I’d get the latter.
Never heard a complaint from the guillotine. That thing can chop all day every day for weeks. The French had a go at maxing it out. Didn’t even brake a sweat.
They did, however, find out approximately how long a severed head lives after being removed from the body. It’s much longer than you’d think.
“Chop chop!” said the guillotine, hungry for its next billionaire.
How do you fuck up an execution? It’s really not that hard to kill a person. Just ask her.
I heard in a podcast that she suffers from a blood disease which could affect the lethal injection. She and her lawyers have repeatedly tried to request that the death penalty be carried out by hanging or firing squad instead, but this was rejected by the judges.
Wow wtf. So a reasonable judge could’ve prevented this but they were too focused on sanitizing the image of what they’re calling “justice”. If they hung or shot her it would look as brutal as it is. But if you make someone “sleep forever” that’s not terrible right? Or at least that is their thinking.
Non medical people making execution drugs because medical professionals took an oath to do no harm
I mean… Still, it’s not hard to put something in someone that would kill them. Pretty sure you can get non medical arsenic or cyanide or something. Honestly, I’m kinda against the death penalty in general, but if it’s going to happen, they should fucking do it right. I’d much rather get shot than injected
remember in america, the ones who administer lethal injections are as a rule incompetent.
you may think i am being hatefull to executioners, but it’s more complicated then that. if you are medically trained you say an oath to do no harm, doing so anyway will cost you your medical license. so the one who prepares and administers the injection is not medically trained.
also the chemicals are not produced in or by medically licensed pharmaceutical companies. and raw chemicals that are legally allowed to be used are not allowed to be sold to the prisons who do lethal injections. so they have to order from ilreputable sources, who are also incompetent. you may remember the big discussion over some states voting on being allowed to chance what chemicals can be used to kill people.
so it’s not unheard of for people to survive their execution, and why they recover at the hospital after. the executioner is a moraless incompetent who is back yard mixing cut chemicals with an aura of legitimacy as paper thin as his credentials.

Worse, arguably. In medieval times they wouldn’t (be able to) save them from the brink of death only to execute them when they have recovered.
They should just let her free at this point. She won.
I read this book, Reincarnation Blues, where this society rehabs people by hugging them and reminding them of how to be a good person. Seems better than lethal injection
I would kill so many more people.

The murder sounds like a satanic panic story. She was carrying around a piece of skull afterwards. The boy pled and got life +25 while she fought it and originally got the death by chair. Personally, while I’m morally ok with just being done with certain people, the death penalty in the US is too screwed up to keep. This one definitely was a good candidate for it and needs to not get back into society, however that works.
How TF did they screw that up TWICE?!

Also I just wanna add that the wrestling character in the picture is (I believe) The Undertaker. The actor is now the mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee. This is a very Tennessee post.
I had to look it up, Kane was the mayor of Knox county, TN, not the undertaker. (Wikipedia, Knoxville TN website)
I heard (also on NPR) that she has a rare vein condition which makes it incredibly difficult to administer anything by IV.
The medical staff performing the injections have been accused of not being properly trained/qualified
They’re not actually medical professionals right? I think the hippocratic oath basically prevents actual doctors and medical professionals from taking that job, so it’s essentially non-medical staff performing the injections.
From what I understand, she has some sort of blood disorder that can interfere with the chemicals. They were told this by her lawyers and went through with it anyway. Twice. And she survived. Both times. So yeah. That’s fun.

Every time the state botches an execution, remember that that same state found them guilty.
(The state is too flawed to have the responsibility, in my opinion. A lot of innocent people are sent to prison)
Personal opinion. I do not agree with the death penalty. Also a personal opinion, if the death penalty is applied, it cannot be barbaric and inhuman. Personal self-awareness. If a loved one was harmed horribly,… this is why we have a jury of our peers. No person could be unbiased.

Seems, once again, none of you read beyond the headline. Do any of you actually know what she did to be sentenced to death? There’s no fucking way she deserves to be released.
On Jan. 12, 1995, 18-year-old Pike, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, and her friend Shadolla Peterson lured Slemmer to the woods in Knoxville, Tennessee.
There, Pike and Shipp tortured Slemmer and bludgeoned her to death. Pike believed Slemmer was interested in her boyfriend, according to court documents.
“When Slemmer tried to flee, Pike sliced her stomach with the box cutter. … As Slemmer begged for her life, Pike repeatedly kicked her in the face. Pike then cut Slemmer’s throat as she begged for mercy,” the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office wrote in court documents.
After Slemmer made one final attempt to escape, Pike smashed the back of her head with a rock, they wrote. Shipp also carved a pentagram into Slemmer’s chest, and Pike later showed off a piece of Slemmer’s skull to a friend.
Fuck this woman. She doesn’t deserve freedom. Finish the sentence humanely if they’re going to do it or put her back in prison for life. But do not release this psychopath.
No one talks about releasing her. Also, read about her backstory and tell me you are sure you wouldn’t snap after being exposed to that kind of abuse.

The state took their shot and missed. To try again would be Cruel & Unusual. She doesn’t have to be released, but her sentence should be commuted to Life Without Parole, which she certainly deserves. But the Death Penalty is off the table for her.
She legitimately deserves to die in the most horrible way.

One would have thought that we would have some kind of automated procedure to add a lot more waiting time and re-asses the form of execution if not life sentence based on doctors, not judges, instead but I guess not.
Doctors don’t want to be involved with the death penalty. I goes against their whole saving lives thing.

The hospital staff are obligated to keep her alive. They won’t take part in the execution by letting her die.
Most lethal injections aren’t administered by doctors because it would violate the Hippocratic oath, and in some places can get their medical license revoked.
So she’s going to bounce back and forth between the people trying to kill her and the people trying to keep her alive, because that’s how our system is designed and it doesn’t offer a better alternative to this situation…
