Those ones actually work better. The short, sharp shock ones can be hit at speed if you have a good suspension. The slow ones like that will lift the rear end off the ground if you go too fast, they’re way more effective.

The effective term, at least in Southern California for the low long ones are ‘humps’ as opposed to the short tall ‘speed bumps’.

That’s a “speed pillow”. There is a whole range of different types, bumps, humps, pillows, pads, etc that all have different applications and effects.

I might be guessing incorrectly, but it feels like users here don’t post personal pictures as much (for a variety of good reasons). So this kind of recognition isn’t as common.

They do often force people to go way under the speed limit. The thing being visible is an additional indicator that you should take it extra slow and careful here.

the point of speed bumps isn’t to slow to a crawl just before you hit them and then carry on speeding (which is what everyone does…)
if you’re actually going the speed limit, it shouldn’t damage anything…

Most speed bumps/humps these days require you to go below the speed limit to avoid damage to the car unless you’re driving some jacked-up monster with loose suspension.

Idk…a lot of speed bumps I’ve come across are crazy violent. They aren’t sloped enough and instead project upwards very abruptly.
Obviously, not every speed bump is the same, but still.
I really would prefer for hidden speed bumps to not exist when I’m riding my motorcycle, for example, where that can be a rather dangerous “feature” of the road.

Most speed bumps in the usa will fuck up your car, or at least give you a really bad day if you hit them at anything over 3mph. There are milder versions with names like “speed pillows” that let you go a little faster, but even those don’t let you go the full speed limit.

The most common modifications cities are doing to roads that are easy to speed on is to add either:
- sidewalk extensions, narrowing the road at the most crossed point;
- speed bumps, as seen here;
- and/or chicanes, which break up the straight and requires a driver to be more active in their steering.
All these techniques are effective at slowing cars down on straight roads.

Mate I’m on holiday in South Africa, the amount of invisible death bumps I’ve seen on 100km/h roads, without warning signs, which can only be taken at 5km/h, are insane. Our rental 4x4 lost 10 years of its suspension life during our 4 weeks trip. And that’s calculated without all the pothole terror. The roads here are almost as bad as roads in Belgium while the speed bumps are a hammer to your spine. If you want to start a good business here, open a tire and suspension shop.

Ah, I see you’ve encountered one of the ancient monoliths. Once a yellow pillar of the community, these behemoths delighted neighborhood children who would spend hours playing with them. Many skateboards and scooters were propelled upwards by these olden obstacles, but bicycles were the most well-regarded. And these highlighter highlights could make any child on a bicycle feel like a king. Those who could wheelie achieved jumps, those who could balance achieved wheelies, and those who could do neither taught everyone the importance of a helmet. “But I can’t do it!” the smaller ones would yell, and others would shout, “faster! Yes, once a mighty watering hole for the daring, this archaic entertainment has laid down and breathed its last. Its once bright yellow skin has fallen off over the years, revealing a rotting blemish on the road. Where there was once cheers and laughter surrounding this proud protrusion, now lies a pile of bones and the modern chants of “god damnit! Where did that come from?!”

I could see it in the thumbnail on my phone. It was so obvious I spent another minute staring at the foreground of the photo looking for an actual hidden speed bump lol. Different story in a vehicle moving 25+ when you’re not specifically told to look for it though.
Spray paint a dick on it and it’ll be repainted within a week

I’ve always seen signs posted next to speed humps and bumps for additional notice they are there, in addition to the paint on them.
It looks like there should be a sign on the right next to the bump, but it’s missing.
