Answering this question makes it easy for the cop to write it in his report that you admitted guilt.

I know someone who said he has no idea what his speed was. When the cop was pressing harder and harder to get him to accept he asked “do you have a calibrated speed gun in your car”. The cop admitted he didn’t and the guy said “this conversation is over then”, and the cop let him drive off.

I felt like I was being a giant asshole but I got off the same way. Cop was trying to make me admit to driving fast. I said I wasn’t and asked what they clocked me at. They said they didn’t get me with the radar gun. I said “ok,” and just stared at her.

In my youth (look, this was like a decade ago, I don’t speed much these days), I had a nice car with superb high-speed stability and a big engine (by my standards at the time anyway). It was a super beautiful spring evening, I’d just put on my grippy summer tires and the road was damn near empty. So I was cruising at 120 km/h and decided to overtake a bus going 90. Well it wasn’t very difficult to go from 120 to 180 in just a few seconds and then I coasted back to a more sane speed fairly quickly.

So when I got pulled over and the cop asked me if I knew how fast I was going, I said “I don’t know the exact number, I was looking at the road not the speedometer, could you tell me?” and was told they caught me at 120 km/h. Nearly sighed out in relief at that point.

I used to watch this British show called Police Interceptors. Tge narrator loved talking about how the officers drive Subaru Imprezas and Mitsubishi Evo 9s/10s, and that their top speed is 155mph. My thought was always “So get a car that goes faster than 155, got it”

It’s easier for them if you incriminate yourself.

Officer pulls out their gun BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Officer: Suspect is down. Suspect had a gun.

I once responded with “honestly no but I mustn’t have have be doing the speed limit or we wouldn’t be here”. It got a laugh and I was let off with a warning. For the record, I’m a white guy with a mustache. Cops love mustaches

No, it is definitely the driver’s job to keep an eye on how fast they’re going.

So they don’t kill people around them who are driving responsibly

So they know when they set a P.B. without having to be told.

Ok so you are allowed to drive 30 km/h.

        What do you do?

        A) read your speedometer in order to drive according to the speed limit.

        B) just wing it and guess the speed.

        C) ask the policeman who you almost run over.

The only good answer is “to my knowledge I was driving within the limit”.

If you say “yes” and were speeding you’ve just admitted you knew you were speeding, if you say “no” you’ve just admitted you weren’t keeping track of your speed.

You can just look at him and not answer.

You need to give them license, registration, and proof of insurance, and otherwise comply, but you don’t need to talk to them.

      I mean crying kinda works

So my first ticket I should have gotten was in high school. My gf and two of our friends went two towns over to get slurpees (they had the good machine). I got pulled over doing 50 in a 35. Trying to catch up with the rest of our friends who had come along but lost me at a red light). Well all of the girls in the car started crying (for reasons?) and I just told the officer what was going on. I mean I could handle that speeding ticket.

Well after fifteen seconds both the officer and I were having a lot of trouble not laughing. Why the hell were they crying, I was the one who was going to have to pay some money. So he went to his car and giggled for a minute or two, then came back and gave me a warning.

I never got a satisfactory answer why she was crying, but like, teenagers right?

“yes, I do, if you can tell me how fast you think I was going I’ll happily corroborate whether your information is correct or not”.

Only if you knew you weren’t speeding and/or have a dashcam that records your speed.

Am I the only person around here who uses cruise control? Like all the time. Set it for 5 over, and I’m good. With adaptive cruise control, it will even slow you down when the guy in front is going slower.

    source
    • ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

      adaptive cruise control

My car originally had that, but one day it came back from the service appointment at the dealership and that was no longer available. Software update removed that, probably because too many people were falling asleep thanks to that and the lane assist shit.

I almost got very messed up in a rental car using that. I was on a fairly tight winding road just West of Klamath Falls in Oregon. There was a concrete barrier median, the roadway, while fast was very 3 dimensional. I was overtaking a logging truck to my left with afternoon sun creating a ton of broken light (really pretty honestly). But the adaptive cruise got messed up with everything going on and did a hard braking when I absolutely didn’t expect and was very much not convenient to keep control. The brakes were worn so it tried to dive to the right, toward the semi. It was very memorable.

I know this is a joke, but, no it is your job as a driver to know how fast you are going. It is one of the basic rules of having the privilege to drive. Of course the fact that so many drivers seem to think this is some kind of infringement is why there are so many fatal accidents. Which wouldn’t be so bad if they only maimed and killed the speeders & drunks.

    source
    • doingthestuff@lemy.lol ⁨17⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Sure, know how fast you’re going. But don’t ever answer that question if you were speeding, you’re admitting guilt. It’s actually illegal for cops to ask that question in some states.

I got pulled over once when I was younger. I used to street race in the Chicago are so I was quite used to cops (this is 20 years ago). Anyways I get pulled over and he says the line. I told him my speedo only goes to 120mph and I was well past that. He goes “138” I’m like damn. Welp going to jail. Checked my license ect, then asked to see my friends ID to check for warrants. He flipped open his wallet and he’s a local PD for a adjacent department. The cops looks at me and him and goes “You mother fuckers need to go home and park this, if I see you again I sware the Christ…” No problem officer!

Dropped my car off and got my cop buddies Camaro SS for the rest of the night.
