Conservative politics: apocalypse 100% speedrun
You’re not wrong, that’s literally their goal.
I didn’t know Spain is Middle Earth!!!
Wasn’t Mordor to the south?
Maybe I’m using the wrong compass…
Mordor In The Middle is my most anticipated new Frankie Muniz project.
Uy… siempre pueden refugiarse en las ex colonias… digo, argentina todavia safa
Esto esta bien jodido, y con el supuesto niño que se viene, no nos van a quedar dientes
¿Sigue Argentina esperando que la salve el mercado libre?
Helps that Europe is warming faster than the global average. Karma, I guess.
What do you mean by karma? Europe is doing the most to stop global warming.
Source? Not to say they aren’t putting in a ton of effort and making great progress. It’s just hard for me to see them as the biggest force in stopping global warming when China built an entire Germany of electrical capacity last year and almost all of it was renewables
Their manufacturing leadership has brought solar and wind down so cheap that it’s no longer economical to use create non-renewable generators in most cases. They’re also doing a fantastic job producing new electric cars and industrial scale batteries
China is still massively polluting but they’re showing a kind of leadership on climate change that I wish I saw in America
I’m curious to hear your take on why Europe is doing the most on climate change
Karma for what?
Europe (alongside the USA) has been releasing disgusting amounts of climate change-inducing gases since the 18th century, and they (alongside the USA) were the main profiteers of climate pollution until the latter half of the 21st century. Arguably still are, though China etc. also play a part now.
Granted, this treats nations as monoliths, it’s not like the population of most countries really had a choice for the most part.
Yet those most affected by heatwaves are elderly and chronically ill people who can‘t afford proper cooling technology.
It‘s not hurting those in power, it‘s hurting those already marginalised.
This is also how I see the movie Idiocracy vs Reality. Reality is plain worse
Yeah, the dummies said “bet” and no one has curbed their child rearing to reduce overall impact.
Eugenicist, vile shit to say. The problem is the capital owners and billionaires/trillionaires, not the poor “idiots” breeding too much you absolute weapon.
Careful with your wording. It is difficult to “curb” reproduction in a humane and democratic way.
Data centers are fast tracking climate change
Don’t blame everything on the data centers. Everything else is doing its part in contributing to climate change.
Apart from that data centers, at the scale at which we seem them pop up now, are way too young to have a considerable effect on the current heat wave. Which doesn’t mean that they won’t in the future. Climate change is, after all, a decades long project
Absolutely. It’s not something new nor caused by something new.
But trump has cut a lot of green laws for data centers. And power plants.
And the sheer amount of additional heat and power consumption these data centers that are running, are using is insane. Akin to adding another few states worth of power and pollution in a span of a few years.
Of course that much additional heat and green house gasses makes a difference. I mean, my understanding is we are probably already past the point of fixing it.
The best we can do is completely stop green house gasses now and hope the extreme consequences only last a few hundred years.
But trump and these data centers are currently undoing all of the progress that has been made (here in the U.S anyway).
Not that much progress was made. But there were corporate interest efforts.
I mean let’s be real. The epa regulations were still absurd before Trump cut them, and they never fine anyone even though it sure seems like literally every company has been lying about meeting those restrictions.
That bottom image is, like, the most aggressively chic weather forecast I’ve ever seen.
le weather
“I feel better!”
“Shutup, you’re dead.”
cat in background, being swung, yowling
“Actually, might go for a walk.”
“I feel happy!”
“You’re not fooling anyone.”
We are all gonna die!
But at least we generated value for the shareholders.
Get on our level scrubs.

You know what would help this situation?
AI
Lots and lots of AI.
Also more religion.
14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Damn snowflakes. In our days we would have fixed that with a photoshop.

AI will totally develop to a point it comes up with a miracle solution that needs no change in lifestyle or social system. /s

I think AI will be really really useful for a lot of things. Not just LLMs for those that only see chatgpt as AI.
That being said, you’re good damn right that no human progress matters when we aren’t allowed to try a system other than "give everything we gain to the people who already have everything.
Technology has given us so much more ability to create and sustain, yet. Even people in wealthier counties have only had their standard of living standards or go down due to enshittification/instrumental convergence and lack of antitrust stopping growth-maximizing tumours from further monopolizing.
We can actually create reliable frameworks for a better society, with More responsive firm of growth that wasn’t built hundreds of years ago when we didn’t have a very good comprehension around some things.
Billionaires should not own the media. Billionaires should not direct text and science research. Billionaires should not be immune from accountability. Groups like the heritage foundation should have long been met with the violence currently being imposed on students, scientists, and actual journalists through the administration.
Making monopolistic power consolidating into a firm of free speech was already a final nail in the neoliberal coffin, splitting people between a fascist cult, people who still haven’t realized that neoliberal performative faux progression is just a wing of the fascists, and both are furiously fighting the left, actual progressives, scientists, historians, and experts in living systems/epistemology, or the actual study of intelligence and what we’ve already been able to learn from it.
On the whole, we can actually conceptualize the proper way to balance systems in a way that appropriately improves the environment for literally everyone. Even billionaires would likely be more happy, just less able to treat the whole of humanity as a play thing.
Not enabling the richest asshole to casually decide a million+ of the poorest should go die because we need trillions in tax cuts for billionaires for some reason.

Unironically yes. AI would help us to change the climate

How?

Oh, thank the merciful lord and saviour.
I was a bit worried that we were actually going to have to do something meaningful there for a second, phew!!

Also let’s concentrate most of the world’s wealth into the hands of a handful of creepy psychopaths. That would probably solve everything.

The world needs more bond villains.
