I had a VHS tape that showed a trailer of Mario 64 lol it was amazing
Gerudo@lemmy.zip 1 week ago
I’ve got one that showed Donkey Kong Country for the SNES. I think they sent them out if you had a Nintendo Power subscription.
aeronmelon@lemmy.world 1 week ago
If you subscribed to Nintendo Power they sent it for free. You could also request it.
I remember getting Donkey Kong Country, Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Diddy Kong Racing.

If we speak about next gen, Super Mario 64 was a real next generation. It was a magical moment. Today kids don’t have this kind of magic anymore.
schnurrbart@lemmy.world 1 week ago
The closest we got to true next-gen experience is perhaps progress in VR but it didn’t take off like 3D did.
Rubanski@discuss.tchncs.de 1 week ago
Absolutely true. Playing Boneworks the first time was a really magical moment.

Rubanski@discuss.tchncs.de 1 week ago
Bitdoo just released a controller in crystal Blue as an hommage to this very console. It looks amazing

My first memory of the N64 was seeing it in a Blockbuster not long after it came out. the kid playing was doing the first slide in Mario 64 over and over. Later I saw it at a Toys R Us and the person was in Dire Dire Docks. I remember the tint was off and the water looked green. Both of those locations are long gone now, of course. 👴
Anonymous_Leaker@lemmy.world 1 week ago
Oh, man, Blockbuster. That unlocks another bunch of memories.

I bought one the day it came out in the UK. Back in those days they didn’t get released in all countries at the same time, there was nearly a year between Japan and the UK. I used to go through the backs of magazines staring at the adverts trying to find someone who would sell an import for a remotely reasonable price but they were inflated by like 2.5x.

I still remember seeing it as a young child at the E3, which is a wild memory now because (1) they stopped allowing children and (2) they no longer exist.
The demo included Bom-omb Battlefield and it was the first time I had seen 3D. Sure PlayStation and Saturn (and I think Jaguar?) were there too, but Mario 64 was definitely the most impressive.

I discovered Starfox 64 the same year I discovered weed. It was a good year.
taiyang@lemmy.world 1 week ago
Hehe. If that was me I’d have discovered weed at like, 10. That may be problematic, lol.

Just started playing jet force Gemini the other day. I wasn’t crazy as a kid, the targeting system is indeed awful.
Rubanski@discuss.tchncs.de 1 week ago
I was never able to finish it…
Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 week ago
That’s why I’m playing it now but the targeting is so awful I’m not sure u want to.

Perfect Dark multiplayerwas sort if the precursor to a lot of online shooters. It was also the only one with bots which made it highly advanced for it’s time and allowed a lot of replayability.
Banjo-Kazooie was my favorite game of all time, though.

We got to rent time on one of these that very summer in an arcade-like coffee shop (or something, I was young, I don’t remember) in NYC. Everything was in Japanese, but Mario was running around in an open world and it blew our minds.

What better way to celebrate the 30th N64 anniversary than by playing the PC decomps/ports of the greatest hits: readonlymemo.com/decompilation-projects-and-n64-r…

Three games at launch in the US. Mario 64, PilotWings 64, and WaveRace 64.
All bangers.
ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 1 week ago
A new pilotwings would make me think hard about getting a Switch 2.
A new Custom Robo would 100% do it.

I’ve still got one kicking around for a yearly get together with friends, where we play nothing but Mario Kart 64 the entire day.
Specifically battle mode on skyscraper.Modded with am HDMI out and original controllers with GameCube joysticks.

And emulation still isn’t perfect, I’m considering to buy it one for my crt.
thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 week ago
If you have a strong PC and setup software emulation with modern emulators, and use CRT filters / shaders, then its not bad. It’s pretty good nowadays. I mean its even good enough for Speedrunners as a replacement for real hardware. Most 3D emulation will never be perfect. We don’t even reach perfect emulation for most 2D and older hardware. To me the biggest problem is the game controller setup. With the layout of the regular controllers, some games aren’t as good to play (Mischief Makers / Yuke Yuke Troublemakers come to my mind).
SolarPunker@slrpnk.net 1 week ago
Shaders are good when used properly, usually not in 16:9 1080p LCDs; old hardware is relatively cheap and emulation not very faithful. On controller side looks like there’s an 8bitdo controller but I’m not informed, I just need a way to control X-axis.

I still have one kicking around in case I feel like playing some Goldeneye.
MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 week ago
I didn’t grow up with the console but I absolutely adore it. It birthed some of my favorite games of all time. There’s something that feels so cozy about it. I know it’s been said to death but I feel like I can talk to another N64 fan and it’s almost guaranteed we played the same games
northernlights@lemmy.today 1 week ago
Ouch i feel old

No
hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 week ago
fuck I’m. old, I had one. ?Mario Kart and Golden Eye got played… a loy.
farmgineer@nord.pub 1 week ago
I played one once at a rich cousin’s house around release and I think once a few years later. I wouldn’t touch one again until 2012ish and that controller felt awful.
