All cuisine from all countries restarted 500 years ago. Korea didnât have chili peppers, Russia didnât have tea or potatoes, no one had coffee, itâs amazing how much of our cultural identity is firmed up after a few generations.

But they were all deceived. For another plant foodstuffs was made. One Allium to rule them all, One Allium to find them; One Allium to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

ButâŚI donât want to throw my Allium in a Volcano :(

âŚwould you, if it was deliciously caramelised afterwards? đđ

Cold bean shots rule
jupyter_rain@discuss.tchncs.de â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Thanks, I hate it.
TheBat@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Web donât know where onions originated because their use predates written language.
flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Holy crap
lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I donât know how Iâd exist without allium and chili. I would simply pop out of existence like a flavorless virtual particle
Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Man, i fucking love alliums. â¤ď¸ garlic â¤ď¸ onions â¤ď¸
Sunsofold@lemmings.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Pity the poor souls who donât like onions. No place is safe for them. The foods of all lands are just too delicious for them to handle.
Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Americas have grains they just largely werenât domesticated.
valtia@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Some were, but generations of cultural genocide, land theft, and economic pressures meant that many domesticated crops and practices were lost. For example, it was illegal in many places for indigenous americans to eat any âindianâ food or to grow, hunt, or collect any of their traditional foods. They were forced to work for low pay and spend money to buy western foods, or they were forced to stay on reservations and rely on federal food programs

One correction and fun fact: We absolutely had bamboo.
quediuspayu@lemmy.dbzer0.com â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
The bamboo you can see in Spain is the American one and now that I think about it, to call it bamboo itâs a relatively recent thing, thirty years ago it was most commonly known as american cane.
atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Itâs almost exclusively called River Cane here. Probably why nobody thinks itâs bamboo.
angrystego@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Iâd argue we also didnât suffer without cranberries - we always had the similarly delicious Vaccinium vitis-idaea.
boonhet@sopuli.xyz â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I actually prefer it to cranberries
Kolanaki@pawb.social â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Who doesnât like
parfaitonions? You ever hear someone say âhey you want someparfaitonionsâ and the other person respnds âhell no, I donât want noparfaitonions?âGrail@multiverse.soulism.net â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I hate onions. All of a sudden My pasta started tasting like shit and I couldnât figure it out. I was gagging. Turned out they changed the recipe of My store bought toscana. They added onions. Fuck onions.
baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Iâm sorry for your taste. I also have specific food sensitivities and it sucks.
Apepollo11@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I wonder if Iâve got the same kind of thing. I love onions but absolutely hate leeks. They taste like the smell of stale urine.
Iâve never understood it - I know they donât taste like this to other people. I like the other edible alliums, but leeks taste uniquely awful.
I keep trying them every few years hoping that my tastes have changed, but they havenât until this point.
apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Allium is legion.
multifariace@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I also think about this. However this person was misinformed on grapes. Some grapes are native to North America.

As an Oklahoman, it is a shock for me to learn that okra is from the Old World
MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
The old old world. East Africa. God I love okra.
Aganim@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
If only onions and the like didnât give me such gutwrenching cramps, love the taste, but partaking in anything containing onions, leek or too much garlic just isnât worth the aftermath. âšď¸

None for the Austrians though.
TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago

robocall@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Europe decided. No onions for Austria.

I just went grocery shopping and oh wow looks like onions are nice and cheap and domestic.
Early this week I was cutting onions (figuratively), I feel better now that Iâm cutting onions (literally). Made some tacos. Things are good.
Grail@multiverse.soulism.net â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Mmmmm, grass and nightshade
robocall@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I had an Indian guy tell me Indians have been eating chilies for thousands of years and thatâs why they can tolerate spicy food more than Americans. I told him chilies come from the Americas, arenât native to India, and only arrived after the Columbian exchange. The guy nearly wanted to fight me over it, insisting that chilies are native to India.
TheBat@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Heâs an idiot. We were using peppers before we got our hands on chillies.
Tell him Peru and Thailand have more varieties of chillies to burst his nerve.
chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
If by peppers you mean black pepper, sure. But sweet bell peppers are the same species as jalapeĂąos: Capsicum annuum.
prettybunnys@piefed.social â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Or tomato sauce being a product of the Americas đŤ
abbadon420@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Tomato sauce is clearly a native Italian product /s
