- Comment on The Undiscovered Country: Why is the galley set so worn out? 2 days ago:
The galley is the only place that sees every crew member every day probably twice a day, it gets worn out much faster.
It’s probably one of those things unnoticeable in real life but stand out on screen.

I disliked the episode visually. It was mostly short close up shots with blurry backgrounds in poorly illuminated areas, even the exterior scenes.
Then there was those weird shaky shots that felt so fake.
If someone tells me that it was made with AI I could believe it. Were they going for AI slop aesthetics?

Datura stramonium. It’s relatively common where I live. I smoked its seeds a couple of times, it was weird and unpleasant just enough to not want to keep experimenting. Would not recommend.

Does that mean 3. Desire to do so?
- Comment on Science wins again 5 weeks ago:
That’s why when I saw the long list of side effects of the medication for quit smoking I never read it, I gave it to a friend and ask her if whatever was one of the possible side effects.

I’m 45 and never got that vaccine either, but there were still plenty of polio survivors with crooked legs around, I haven’t seen one of those leg bracers in 30 years. People don’t realise how commonplace they were.
- Comment on if I ever have grandkids that is 1 month ago:
Every time people talk about polio on the internet is about iron lungs, when I was a kid in the eighties it was rather common to see adults with leg deformities from polio. They were living reminders.

Hmmm, no. Not a dung beetle at least, it was an European mole cricket, cool dude, I still don’t know where he was trying to go.

The first time I saw a flowering lettuce it was expected and surprising at the same time.

That was the part I understood, it is the other one that I didn’t fully understand and I’m not sure if I want to.
- Comment on Can't stop till brimstone 2 months ago:
Salt (sodium) messes with the ability of plants to absorb certain nutrients from the soil, so if that soil wasn’t very rich to begin with it can easily starve whatever is nearby.
I personally tried to kill weeds with salt in certain spots of my backyard and failed because it has plenty of nutrients and good drainage and salt doesn’t last long after a couple rains.
- Comment on Can't stop till brimstone 2 months ago:
No, salt is not toxic.

I agree, those charred capsules might have been something else. Now I want to look at the other paper to see if there any pictures
- Comment on Honestly wtf? 2 months ago:
Bear in mind that it was a small dose.
It’s hard to describe, my best shot would be a bit like vertigo but without any of the motion sickness. I had a sensation that what I was seeing wasn’t entirely right while everything was perfectly normal.
- Comment on Honestly wtf? 2 months ago:
That was what I thought until I reached this citation.
Charred capsules of Datura stramonium were recovered in a Middle Bronze Age ritual pit at Prats, Andorra, ca. 1600 BCE103
- Comment on Honestly wtf? 2 months ago:
I tried stramonium a couple times by smoking some seeds, I would describe it as unpleasant enough to not bother again, in the just not worth it category.

I wonder if it got translated to many languages, growing up in Spain I never heard of him. Over here we got Beakman’s World.

I thought it was Brix, in retrospect, 45° brix is absurdly high for any fruit juice.
- Comment on Oechslegrad 2 months ago:
After googling a little I learned that the scale we used is called Brix. One of my tasks in the winery was to take samples of grape juice and register the sugar content using a refractometer similar to the one on the picture.
- Comment on Oechslegrad 2 months ago:
I guess I was using a different scale when I worked at the winery. Never saw anything above 20.
- Comment on Oechslegrad 2 months ago:
That’s pretty high for grapes.

I don’t grow anything, whatever is in my backyard grows by itself, I just go out there from time to time and forage the useful stuff.

In my town in the summer, there’s a spot where just after sunset you can see the flocks of swallows retreating from the fields while flocks of bats arrive from the other side. It is cool to see.
