Wait, no, please convince my countryfolk to metricate. I’m an engineer and desperately want to be able to design things in metric. It’s so much better but the average American doesn’t know a meter from a hole in their ass
Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 45 minutes ago
Did you know that Americans use Milli-inches?
alpine_jim@piefed.social 1 hour ago
I’ve only ever encountered decaliters in Dune, where there’s the awkward phrase “38 million decaliters” instead of 380 million liters”. It’s probably because Frank Herbert was initially thinking in gallons, and it got changed later.
melsaskca@lemmy.ca 2 hours ago
usa kicked the Brits out of the usa back in the day but they stole and kept their system of measurements (and of course adapted them over time, like americans do). They avoid the metric system by a country kilometer.
Schadrach@lemmy.sdf.org 2 hours ago
Don’t make me start measuring things in decifeet just to be contrary. I have a measuring tape dividing the foot in tenths and I’m not afraid to use it.

Look at that hourglass figure
M137@lemmy.today 38 minutes ago
It’s the negative space between two soapy titties.
SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 hours ago
Now do the same with US customary units. Let’s see what their hourglass looks like 🫠

Metric haters when they realize their electricity is measured in Volts (metric unit), not in “relatable” units like Sparks:

I’m not 100% sure on the accuracy of this data, but is ever there was a place to paste this information, it is here.
Average Tiddy weight per boob by cup size, in Metric and Lemmy scales
A cup = 0.454kg = 1.1 Tins of Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce
B cup = 0.78kg =1.9 Tins of Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce
C cup = 1.023kg = 2.4 Tins of Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce
D cup = 1.388kg = 3.3 Tins of Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce
E cup = 1.950kg = 4.6 Tins of Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce
F cup = 2.35kg = 5.6 Tins of Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce

Why is 1 unit of volume 1000 units of weight?
As in, 1 litre of water is 1 kilogram. 1 gram of water is 1 millilitre.
Why couldn’t 1 gram be 1 litre?
SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 1 hour ago
The International System of Units (SI) uses the kilogram as its base unit of mass, so it is 1 thing = 1 thing in SI units, and SI is what most people think that they mean by “metric system” these days. Even though the SI isn’t entirely metric. (The Celsius scale isn’t, for example.) Also, liters are not SI units; the m3 is the SI unit of volume, and the liter was defined in terms of that.
To put it another way, the base unit of mass is a kilo- of something, and it (not quite) equals a metric non-metric-system unit of volume of water. I dunno, the metric system seems all kinds of messed up to me!
(/j)
polotype@lemmy.ml 2 hours ago
See, 1 liter isn’t 1kg , 1 litre of water weighs 1kg. There’s the difference, and as such there is no reasin for 1 litre of water to weigh 1 gram.
im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 31 minutes ago
You don’t seem to have understood the question.
1 kilogram is 1000 grams. Kilo isnused in place of the 1000.
1 litre of water weighs 1000 grams. Why couldn’t it be 1 litre of water is 1 gram?
pneumaticFax@lemmy.world 46 minutes ago
Kilogram is not the metric unit of weight, it’s mass. 1 liter of water has mass of 1kg. 1kg of water weighs 9.81 newtons - at least on earth. Newton is the metric unit of weight.
UnrepententProcrastinator@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
It’s like the reason 0 is freezing water temp and 100 is boiling water.
They used water as a standard when deciding what things ought to mean.
Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 1 hour ago
The question wasnt about water specifically. Theyre trying to ask why does 1e3 mass = 1e0 volume and/or 1e0 mass = 1e-3 volume. Why doesnt 1e0 mass = 1e0 volume

Deka and Hecto are the metric system’s unloved children
mumblerfish@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
Hecto used to be popular in sweden until like 2000 or so, when it came to food. Especially candy and charcuterie were priced and ordered in “hekto” (the “gram” dropped in speech).
Axolotl_cpp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 hours ago
Hecto is very used in Italy with food “I’d like 3 hectos of ham, sir”
kazerniel@piefed.world 6 hours ago
In Hungary “dekagram” is the default unit when buying food from actual humans at a deli counter or market. Asking for 30 deka of cheese sounds like a more human-scale number than asking for 300 grams.
Though it’s interesting that hecto would be even better for this, as we always use deka in 10s (or at least 5s), so we could just ask for 3 hectograms of cheese for an even more human-scale number :)
Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 5 hours ago
That’s pretty cool. Makes me think about speaking in ounces locally (NL). “3 ounce of cheese please” will get you 300g. They could ask if they cut it too fat: “mag het een onsje meer zijn?”/“Is it ok if it’s a small ounce more?”
NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 8 hours ago
Hey hey, US customary units are metric:
The majority of U.S. customary units were redefined in terms of the meter and kilogram with the Mendenhall Order of 1893 and, in practice, for many years before.
They just use weird provincial conversion factors, that’s all.
wieson@feddit.org 7 hours ago
They could be more metric. Just imagine this wonderful reality:
- 1 inch = 2,5cm
- -> 1 hand = 10cm
- 1 foot = 30cm
- 1 yard = 1 m (=3ft+1hd)
- 1 pound = 500g = ½kg
- 1 thou = 25μm
SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 6 hours ago
Funny thing is here in the Netherlands some people use pounds and ounces ( pond and ons in Dutch ) when they buy meat at the butcher. 1 pond = 500 gram, 1 ons = 100 gram
NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 7 hours ago
- 1 yard = 1 m (=3ft+1hd)
Oh yeah, that’ll be fine, I’m sure it will make everything simpler:
1km = 1000yd + 1000hd = 1111yd + 1hdWhat could possibly go wrong.
1 slug = … ?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that just the scale? It’s not the metric system, there’s no meters in here, this could be used for bytes of data: gigabytes, terabytes…
Passerby6497@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
I gotta say, I absolutely hate the way data storage is notated. Because colloquially, a _giga_byte is 1024 MB, but that’s actually a _gibi_byte, and a proper _giga_byte is only actually 1000 MB.
So storage sellers are technically accurate when they say they’re giving you a 1000 gigabytes of storage, but your operating system shows gibibytes as gigabytes, so you don’t actually have as much as you think.

FAQ
What does this mean?
The amount of karma (points) on your post and Lemmy account has decreased by one.
Why did you do this?
There are several reasons I may deem a post to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:
Rudeness towards other Lemmings, Spreading incorrect information, Sarcasm not correctly flagged with a /s.
Am I banned from the Lemmy?
No - not yet. But you should refrain from making posts like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote, which may put your commenting and posting privileges in jeopardy.
I don’t believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Lemmy PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Lemmy.com. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Lemmy is privilege, not a right.

A kilometer is
0.000,000,000,000,001 Exameters
0.000,000,000,001 Petameters
0.000,000,001 Terameters

1,000,000,000,000 Nanometer
1,000,000,000,000 Picometer
1,000,000,000,000,000,000 Femtometer
or
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 AttometerTigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 hours ago
You’re talking to an American. They use anything but a logical system. To explain to them what, a kilometer is, you need to put yourself in their position and go from that. Let me help:
A kilometer is:
- 167 Ford F-150’s,
- 1,150 dishwashers,
- 5,556 bibles,
- 5,263 bananas,
- 1,250 AR-15’s,
- 0.62 miles,
- 3,281 feet,
- 39,370 inches,
- etc.
To make sense to an American, you need to not make any sense. This includes swapping the period and comma around in numbers, but you already did that.

Fun coincidence that I was working on making a graph (network) of the relationships between different units yesterday. Here is how it looks in a circle, yellow dots are lengths, mass red and time blue.
Image
It’s not perfect on the phone, but here is the link, press the “Refresh All” button to load the network and run the code.
nadi-system.github.io/playground.html?example=uni…
Context: I’m writing a programming language to analyze graphs, so I thought “units are graph relationships, let me see what I can do”. It was fun, but also funny because so many relationships are not simple factor multiplications. The network was extracted from the data gnu units uses, but I did it halfhazardly, so it’s not perfect.
