My friend group has a game called not enough mana. It’s a drinking game where once you spend all your mana, the only way to get more mana is to take a shot or do a challenge. No one has ever done a challenge. The next morning is painful

Diablo 4 will be six years old by the time this comes out (not including eventual delays), which seems like a decent time between major releases, and three years after the current expansion, which concluded the Mephisto story.
ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 day ago
This used to be pretty standard! If it weren’t for all of Blizzard’s other nonsense, I might applaud this.

Last expansion was this year (I had to look it up). Didn’t even remember it coming out.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 20 hours ago
the most recent expansion was a few months ago, so its just this year lol.

For real. Diablo was the last blizzard IP I cared about and I’m so thoroughly unhyped about this announcement. The game is 3 years old!
bandanawearingbanana@lemmy.world 17 hours ago
I like Diablo and unlike the old heads who don’t actually play the game, I think 3 was peak.
Sure, it wasn’t super difficult dark fantasy dungeon crawling like D2 but shit was fun, well designed and had good variety. It’s a good power fantasy of you being overpowered and killing hundreds of mobs and still getting nice power spikes in the form of rare items that actually make a difference unlike in 4.
Reality@feddit.org 14 hours ago
3 was okayish after they removed the real money ingame shop, which they felt necessary as they wanted the share of the traded items that previously were sold on ebay at the time. D2 is the best of the series, as it’s still a PC game at heart and not targeting controllers and not mini wow like d4 is. I think a Diablo 2 with a good story and ideas from the mod project Diablo would increase long term playability and get me the most.
I am betting they’ll add movement sets from soulslike games and make it controller first gameplay. Just like path of exile 2. That alone will kill the game for me.

3 wasn’t awful, I got plenty of enjoyment out of it. Loved 2 and 2r, 4 was meh at best imo. Haven’t watched the trailer for 5 yet but will soon, am excited!

So first release will be micro transaction garbage with a paid auction house it will create uproar they will roll back some and just slowly implement the micro transactions over time l
Im so tired of blizzard making vending machines instead of games
ruuster13@lemmy.zip 1 day ago
Oh God remember how awful the D3 RMAH was?
Yewb@lemmy.world 1 day ago

As someone who was an extreme diehard fan of diablo lore (hell, look at my username), I’ll never forgive blizzard for tearing it to shreds since Diablo 3. The real game ended at 2 (and the books written after, but before 3) when it comes to lore and story.

D3, D4, and D:I have all been disappointing to me, for different reasons. I’m quite certain D5 won’t be for me either. I am no longer the target audience for Diablo.
bashibazouk@lemmy.world 6 hours ago
I think it’s over specialization. I loved that in D1 that any character could use anything. By D4 every dropped item was character specific which meant no finding cool items of a different class to build the next character around. Also just the finding items. It seemed like every item I found or listed at the shop was just another 1 to 3 points in the character I was playing primary attribute, another point or two specific to that character and a few random filler bonuses. Just boring. Maybe it got better in the later game but as far as I got in the open betas and free weekends convinced me not to buy it…

Did people really dislike 3 that much? I’d heard it was pretty tough at launch, but I only jumped in around Reaper of Souls and had a blast with it. I’ll admit the writing was a little busted but I thought the gameplay loop was excellent.
I played through the campaign for 4, and while it had its moments, I couldn’t stick with it for longer than that. I think their biggest mistake was making it an online open world.
Bosht@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
I’m with you. 3 was great, I played from RoS on as well. 4 was trash. My specific gripe is it was way too much to get decent drops. Insanely hard. Yes you could get a set going but actually finding a perfect stat set for your build was a ridiculous grind.
darthelmet@lemmy.world 12 hours ago
Personally I liked D3 after it got rid of the AH bullshit. For the same reason that a lot of people disliked it: It’s relatively low complexity. People will look down on that as dumbing it down, but to me it’s just getting rid of uninteresting filler. I can’t stand those giant skill trees full of +x% this and +y that. It’s boring AND overwhelming. I have no interest in trying to make my own build in those games. D3 had a small number of choices that for the most part felt distinct enough to understand why you’d choose one over the other.
I also really liked that brief period in WoW where they changed the skill trees to those sets of 3 choices each level breakpoint. It was really interesting thinking about which choices would be most useful for any given situation instead of just looking up a guide then forgetting about it until next expansion.
Alas, they went back to boring number increases because people mistake complexity for depth. This is why I really enjoy roguelikes. The well designed ones give you those bite sized choices with big impacts on your run and the depth comes from understanding the system and your current situation rather than mathing out the optimal set of stat increases.

I liked it gameplay wise, but the story … urgh. Typical comic book vilain tropes. Taunting you with how awesome and cunning they are, just to vanish and leave you with one of their henchmen that you then slaughter. Repeat a few times, until they finally pretend to be really pissed off now and decide to spill their whole plan any why you have no chance of stopping them … just to be stopped.
The only thing the villains in D3 had was arrogance. Everything else was forgettable (to me).

Don’t care. III was so bad that I didn’t even consider looking at IV.
CptOblivius@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I never even played 4. I didn’t ever hear enough good about it to try.
muhyb@programming.dev 1 day ago
They forgot to add Diablo to Diablo IV though. :)

Well, the tag line for D5 is “the lord of terror has returned” so hes back now
muhyb@programming.dev 1 day ago
Yeah, I mean they could’ve make it an expansion pack so Diablo IV would become an actual Diablo game.
