I don’t have anything great to say about this matter, but I have the hiccups… Holy fuck the hiccups!

Ever get hiccups together with acid reflux? That’s an extra special level of hell.
IWW4@lemmy.zip 6 days ago
Holy fuck I cant imagine.

Drinking from the far side of a glass has never not stopped my hiccups
Bongles@lemmy.zip 1 week ago
I don’t understand what that means. How do you drink from the far side of a glass?
shittydwarf@piefed.ca 1 week ago
You lean over top of the glass, and use your lower lip to control the flow, and swallow in this position
BenLeMan@lemmy.world 1 week ago
It sounds (and presumably looks) stupid but this is the only method that actually works for me.

A friend of mine told a story about his brother who had a major surgery in his abdomen and HAD to control his chronic hiccups while in recovery. His doctors helped. I don’t even remember all the remedies he mentioned because there were several and the point was that each person can be different so you have to figure out what works for you.

Omfg… chronic hiccups…
scarabic@lemmy.world 6 days ago
Not nonstop or anything - he just got them often.

I’m curious what the doctors remedies for hiccups were, that didn’t involve inflating his abdomen. My go-to trick for curing hiccups is taking in a deep breath as deep as physically possible, then swallowing as many times as I can while holding my breath. But that wouldn’t be great during abdominal rest because taking in a deep breath causes the belly to expand.

I have found a method that works 100% of the time for me. It sounds silly but bear with me. After the hiccup starts, I tell myself “hiccups arent real” or some equivalent phrase, in my inner voice, as convincingly as possible. Like I actually believe it. It stops immediately, before the second hiccup.
I am spreading this method among friends and family, I would say around a third of then report successes, but Im pretty sure not all of them have tried it seriously and some brush it off as bs.
IWW4@lemmy.zip 6 days ago
Ok next time i have them i will do that.
tomi000@lemmy.world 6 days ago
Please try and report back, Im always curious if it works for others.

Breathe shallow but slow, relax. Hickup is a cramp in the diaphragm, mostly caused through stress.
RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 6 days ago
I can confirm this works. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stopped hiccups doing this. Best if it’s done right away when the episode starts.
KickMeElmo@sopuli.xyz 1 week ago
My wife gets bad hiccups sometimes. I meanwhile can just control my diaphragm and stop hiccuping on command. She doesn’t seem to find that very fair.
video@lemmy.world 6 days ago
Same with my wife… But I just remind her that she is not a fish and she thinks about it for a second and she stops hiccuping.
Fondots@lemmy.world 1 week ago
You can’t really do it to yourself, but I’ve had really good luck ending other people’s hiccups by offering them $5 if they hiccup again

Hiccups are involuntary muscle spasms. Applying heat can help stop muscle spasms. Drinking large gulps of very warm water (as warm as possible) has stopped hiccups for me 100% of the time.

Oh wow!

As someone who gets the hiccups 10-20x a day every day for the last 16 years, fuck hiccups
clif@lemmy.world 5 days ago
How do you endure? I don’t know if I could do that…
You must be exceedingly strong with a fortitude to rival mountains.
RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world 5 days ago
It is what it is. I have permanent nerve damage and randomly get bouts of hiccups throughout the day. Sometimes it will be just 2 or 3, sometimes it lasts for a long time. It’s annoying to say the least. But otherwise harmless. They’re the least of my issues so I try to pay them no mind, but they can of course be obtrusive.

Hiccups suck so bad, people will try all manner of crazy witchcraft to get rid of them.
taygaloocat@leminal.space 1 week ago
I’ve never understood why people tolerate the hiccups. You just keep holding your breath. If you hiccup while holding your breath you take another breath and start again until it’s gone. I’ve never had the hiccups for more than a minute.
Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 6 days ago
Never worked for me, which explains your confusion.
MrNesser@lemmy.world 6 days ago
Hold your breath count to 10 in your head if you hiccup start again until you get to 10

My dog having the hiccups is the cutest thing ever. But everything he does is cute. Burping is cute too.

My remedy was almost always a teaspoon of mustard.
fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 days ago
I just breathe real slow for like 2 mins and by the time I start breathing manually, it’s gone. Nothing painful, nothing required.
dmtalon@infosec.pub 1 week ago
So, I’m glad I’m not the only one…
I despise the hiccups, and do nothing else until I can get rid of them.
Holding my breath and drinking while continuing to hold my breath works pretty well for me if I can’t straight up will them away!
My family thinks it’s funny how much I hate them.
StumblingWasabi@lemmy.today 1 week ago
Try a spoonful of sugar

Plug your ears and drink water.
Or drink water upside down.
These are the treatments that seem to work the best

Just remind yourself you are not a fish and it goes away.

Giant scoop of peanut butter works EVERY. TIME.
For me, at least. YMMV.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 days ago
water stops mine, but some people can have it pathologically.
Lasherz12@lemmy.world 1 week ago
Holding my breath works for me, or maybe it just passes the time. Usually goes away in about 2 full breaths.
random_character_a@lemmy.world 1 week ago
Yeah. Oxygen deprivation releases the reflex, but you have to hold your breath, so long that it hurts.
There have actually been studies why that is.
brb@sh.itjust.works 6 days ago
Why is that?
Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 days ago
Doing a whip it cures hiccups
