Pretty sure he saved some lives as a result of his actions. As I recall, approvals for treatment went up for a bit right?

I was working on a house for this retired lawyer this week. At dinner he was talking about how hard it was to find Healthcare a while ago because his wife had cancer and he had heart issues. He was talking about the thousands he had to pay then and also talking about trying to pay for Healthcare for everyone at his practice and how horribly expensive that was and how he had to eventually drop it. The very next day I walk by the living room and the news is reporting on Luigi, and his comment was “I wish they would just take him outside and shoot him, but they won’t do that will they”
The disconnect, even for someone so smart, is real
skidicarus@sh.itjust.works 4 days ago
I’m failing to see the disconnect. Someone can want healthcare reform in the US without supporting cold-blooded murder lol.
cabillaud@lemmy.world 4 days ago
You think the man is just against “cold-blood” murder and in the same time advocates for shooting Mangione right on the spot? Funny…
Shindo66@lemmy.world 4 days ago
I totally get where you’re coming from, but let me play devils advocate: when their policy is to deny and dispose which results in the death of so many people, ruins the livelihoods of so many people. When we know the majority support universal Healthcare and we know it would save the lives of like 172000 people every year. The ceo may not kill people with a gun, but he is killing with the pen. When they make decisions that they know will kill people but will also raise the stock price, then what is justified?
NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Well, one of them is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths, the other is only responsible for one.

Luigi Mangione sacrificed his freedom for Nothing.
I wouldn’t call removing an asshole who profited on the suffering and deaths of others “nothing.”

Ya, many claims are approved in the following morning, he already saved lives.

Stupid take considering how many centrist Democrats just got primaried.
njm1314@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Right wing Democrats. Not centrists.
daychilde@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Yes, although everything is relative. Democrats are US-centrist and global-right. That’s still simplified, but…
I emphasize my initial “yes” part of my comment, though, in emphasizing that I basically agree with you, sadly. heh
uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 days ago
DSA and progressive Democrats are centrist. Actually they’re Eisenhower Republicans. Centrist or Establishment Democrats statistically serve only corporate lobbyists (who offer them campaign contributions, PAC support, dark money and cushy high-paying jobs when they’re voted out).
So the Blue Dog Democrats are essentially doing the same thing that Republicans do, only they might listen to different lobbyists. Historically, Republicans like big oil more and Democrats like big media more.

He showed that the only way these business listen to working class people about stealing our money and CHOOSING to end our lives is through us making the same decision for them.
Luigi stopped healthcare insurance from using AI, United healthcare even changed how they were denying people to be more fair. However, this lost momentum and a corrupt, business friendly fascist regime came into the picture and gave the insurers their greed back.
Luigi didn’t do what he did for nothing. He showed everyone what is needed, and also showed that it can’t be just one, you gotta catch’em all
quarkquasar@lemmy.world 4 days ago
I say, as punishment, Luigi should be made POTUS.
That was punishment fit enough for trump, and Luigi has helped far more Americans than trump ever will

I’m betting the state prosecutors feared not just the possibility, but the likelihood of jury nullification, and begged the feds to make a deal.
IronBird@lemmy.world 3 days ago
he didnt make a deal though…

Where will “demanding our right to healthcare” get us? We can demand stuff all day long, at best we’ll get ignored. At worst, we’ll lose our jobs (and thus any health care) or our homes or our lives.
The majority of Americans hate this government and the oligarchs who run it. Even if we organized and protested en masse, the billionaires and the deluded cultists who buy their lies will just deride and/or destroy any uprising. We’ve been successfully divided & conquered.
I’m too old to start over. I have a house & a family to think about, my healthcare is tied to that. I can’t risk losing my job. I can’t go starting a revolution. I’m sorry to admit that I’m beat.

I disagree. But if you need to rest, rest. As long as you know they are horrible people, that is enough for me.

90 million people don’t vote. We don’t demand jack shit.
wpb@lemmy.world 3 days ago
So I agree that this is a problem. It undermines the legitimacy of pretty much every sitting government in history. And it’s something that needs solving. Very important.
But when the choice is between someone who shows no motivation whatsoever to support universal healthcare, and someone who shows no motivation whatsoever to support universal healthcare, I kind of struggle to see the connection between low turnout and low healthcare coverage.
Again, low turnout is a bad problem, and if we had higher turnout, no one could ever say “not my president” about Trump/Biden/Obama/Bush, which is something to aim for. Legitimizing the sitting government is very important, and as such greater turnout is important.

This was just one step. More are needed. Even peaceful ones.

Guys let’s keep it real, it’s a revenge story, not some noble act.

This is one of the cases where vengeance is a noble act.

It’s a story about justice, when we are all dying for its lack.
wpb@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Self defense is not violence, it is intelligence. Mangione did the right thing, and the world is a better place for it. And he did this at great expense to himself. This is the definition of noble.
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Probably doesn’t help that Luigi supports the political side that is expressly against increasing healthcare coverage.

And that’s how he was able to confront Brian Thompson. Mangione also shared an observation with the judge that had clearly made an impression on him. He talked about how, while he was posing as a wealthy investor, leadership e-mailed him back within an hour, and he said that was in stark contrast to his interactions with insurers as a patient.
