Itâs not really comparable, my mom didnât buy a PlayStation because she couldnât afford it.
Now I donât have a kid because itâs expensive and I canât afford it ⌠But itâs totally different
Karjalan@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Well my mum didnât buy me a ps2 because she knew I wouldnât have kids. It was prevenge
Drusas@fedia.io â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Yeah, well, my mom didn't buy a PlayStation because she couldn't afford it. She also couldn't afford me. Or my older sister.
RebekahWSD@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
My mother went and got another daughter so she has access to a grandbaby cause me and twin sure arenât ever making any. Especially now weâre almost 40.
Aneb@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
My momâs twin has grandbabies and now grandchildren. Non of my momâs children have had a child yet, so she will go their family gatherings with her twin sister
RebekahWSD@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Mother is an only child so I thiiink itâs her husbandâs niece but Iâm unsure!
Prior_Industry@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Kinda hope people are not making big life changing decisions like this based on what their parents did or did not buy them as a child.
Jimmycrackcrack@lemmy.ml â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Thereâs a kind of a streak of maybe well intentioned but pretty relentless humourlessness on Lemmy. Apologies for being argumentative, but did you think this 2 panel comic strip was representative of an actual scenario someoneâs experiencing? Do you think they really are as you say, making big life decisions based on what their parents did or did not but them as a child? Or do you not think maybe the decision to depict this scenario in this format might indicate itâs more likely a joke?
Prior_Industry@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Most humour has some truth to it no? Otherwise itâs not normally funny.
I can see from comments outside of mine that itâs struck a cord with some, as they have seemingly had bad relationships with their own parents.
Not sure why my comment sucks out enough to question my sense of humour, as I was just commenting that I hope people really are not making these sorts of calls based on spite. I suspect sadly thatâs probably not always the case due to the complexities of people.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago

I think youâre taking this meme way too seriously.
And parents should not be pressuring their kids to have kids they donât want.
Oh honeyâŚ

No âYou sweet summer childâ ?
JayDee@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
We call this hyperbolic dark humor. Itâs meant to be irrational and to sound unhinged. Thatâs where the humor lies.

Good to know đ

Congratulations on not having a child! You deserve attention and praise, but most of it is going to go to expectant parents who are probably just going to fuck things up for everyone, for generations to come. But I see you. You rock.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I donât need attention and praise for not having kids. New parents can have all that. Iâll gladly sleep in on weekends, come home from work and put my feet up, and enjoy my freedom as an adult.
abc@suppo.fi â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
[deleted]DontRedditMyLemmy@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
This takes on a fairly different meaning depending on which parent you are.
smh@slrpnk.net â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
My brother got a Sega Genesis, PS, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, XBox, and XBox360. I got an apple iie and a Gameboy color.
He sold his systems as soon as a new one came out. Mine mysteriously disappeared while I was away at college. Iâm totally not bitter.
Anyways, neither one of us having kids.
jaschen@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Iâm not saying you should have kids. Thatâs a decision you donât take lightly.
But as a father of 2, I want to tell you that you will never love anybody or anything in the world than you will with your kids. I was a selfish piece of shit and after having kids, man, I hate who I was before.
Itâs not for the faint of hearts. Shit ainât easy. But I can tell you itâs quite the experience and I donât regret it.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Iâm a selfish piece of shit and thatâs why I donât want and will never have kids. I like my freedom. I like my partner and I tossing the dogs into the car and just going out somewhere. I like coming home from work and just having a quiet evening with no responsibilities. I like only having to buy groceries for two people.
chewypoops@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I donât even think this is selfish. Itâs only selfish to put yourself first when you have kids who depend on you. People choose the responsibilities they take on in life, and you donât owe the world anything here. If you donât have kids, youâre able to do more for yourself, and anyone who calls you selfish for it may actually be a bit jealous, in which case they should reassess their own parental priorities.
Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Actually, given how ass-tastic Sony has been lately, Iâd say mom made the right call without knowing so.
InputZero@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
The PS2 was a good console, in its time. So was Sony, well they were better than now. Actually thatâs selling the console short, cause most families didnât get it because it played games, they got it to play DVDs and it was by far the first affordable DVD player in itâs time.
piccolo@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
So was Sony, well they were better than now.
Sony was only âbetterâ because they wanted to destroy nintendo for backstapping them.
MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
No one should be having children. Itâs an Earth problem. Not a make the potential grandparents happy problem.
Zephyr@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
You would think the crippling cost of a child would be the reason, but to each their own I guess.

My dad doesnât say it but he wanted the family line to continue. I donât care, humans will continue without this mix of DNA.
He never needs to know I got a vasectomy back in my 30s.
IronBird@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
iâm in a field filled with big ego/low emotional intelligence people and itâd wild to me how obsessed with âlegacyâ so many of them are.
no one even knows about you, why would they care about your family line? the most history will remember 99.999% of us is some obituary in a newspaper noone reads.
all caught up in the rat race wasting their lifes chasing a fulfillment/acknowledgement theyâll neger recieve while burning what little potential for human connection they actually have by overworking so much.
chunes@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
That doesnât narrow it down, unfortunately.

My dad: âif you donât have kids, the family name and lineage dies with you.â
Me:

explodicle@sh.itjust.works â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
So anyhow my wife, kids, and me all have different last names. Complicated hippie stuff yada yada.
At first, my dad was all disappointed the family name ends with me.
Fast forward fifteen years. My dad discovers that our family changed their names when they moved to the âoldâ (middle?) country 100+ years ago, to assimilate there. They just didnât anglicize the name when we moved here.
TL;DR: all names are just made up
Prior_Industry@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
If you start tracing familyâs back far enough you find that most âlineagesâ get murky pretty fast.
jerkface@lemmy.ca â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Anyone walking around doing spermatogenesis without a vasectomy is a fucking idiot.
DontRedditMyLemmy@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
You can do it while you walk??
