I wonder how long before people are going: “Don’t stress me out and ruin my day by texting me” or “I would like a warning, by a slight breeze starting to blow, five minutes before receiving an email”.
ickplant@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Asynchronous methods of communication don’t bother me. It’s only when someone calls me in the middle of my day, expecting me to drop everything and answer.
MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
When people call me, I have a mini panic attack worrying who is dead.
Usually it’s just someone calling to remind me that I have a balance due.
JoShmoe@ani.social 1 hour ago
What if they dont want you to answer? What if the idea was to call while you were too busy to do anything?

When I was a kid, my friends would all come to my house and yell until I came outside… Many Westerners today are simply broken.
Anarki_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 hour ago
That’s better than a ringtone tho.

iOS has call screening now and it is really fucking nice.
Calling from an unknown number that isn’t on my contacts list? You have to listen to Siri ask whats the purpose of your call, and then Siri will let me know your response. Then, if available to answer based on how you responded, ill swipe to join the call.

I love this, too, but it’s hardly “new”
9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Oh I never said it was “new”, but its really nice to have.

My phone has this cool feature where a bot can answer the call and you can see a live transcript, with options to choose answers for “ask why they are calling”, “tell them to call back later”, etc. I use it all the time.
WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Same here
dan1101@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Yeah I think it’s an Android thing. I’ve only gotten a valid answer maybe once or twice.
capuccino@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
And then you got an ad before you know the justification.
ickplant@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
Shit, you’re right, they would totally find a way to enshittify.
homes@piefed.world 2 hours ago
no service starts enshittified. It would be great for a year or two, and THEN the company would ruin the service with ads.
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
If they’re not in my very short contact list, it goes to voicemail. Isn’t that how everyone does it?
It’s not like anyone calls me anymore, anyway. Any.
scytale@piefed.zip 1 hour ago
IOS and Android (or at least on the Pixels AFAIK) now have this feature where you can have it answer for you to screen the caller first.
sphericalcube@lemmy.dbzer0.com 50 minutes ago
Called someone that is using that feature and think its absolutly wild. Especially if its a person you know, like what the fuck?! What happens after? I get put in a queue like “Please wait, your friend will be available soon…” elevator music…?? This is just bullshit that AI companies use to justify their messed up shit. Obviously I hang up after hearing the AI voice.
MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 1 hour ago
I’ve been using this.
Most callers aren’t paying enough attention and just leave a message like it’s voicemail.
0/10 effectiveness.
Blum0108@lemmy.world 50 minutes ago
Don’t have to talk to them? Sounds like a win
gon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 hour ago
OK, so, this is funny, but would you actually be willing to pay for that?
I’m a world-class penny pincher, but this seems to be such an absurd waste of money that it genuinely baffles me. I do get spam calls occasionally, but it’s not even that bothersome. Usually, if they’re not on my contacts list, I don’t even pick up.
Why is this such a deal that you’d be willing to pay?! What kind of calls are you even getting?!?!
UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 3 hours ago
Isn’t that what your voicemail does?
ickplant@lemmy.world 3 hours ago
I mean, yes, and I honestly could not live without transcription. I hate listening to voicemail.
But you would be surprised how many people will not leave a voicemail or will just say “call me.”
UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 2 hours ago
Those people are doing you a favor by letting you know that its not important.
dumbass@piefed.social 1 hour ago
we need a feature where if a number that isn’t stored rings before sending a text, it auto ignores the call untill a text is sent.
JakoJakoJako13@piefed.social 2 hours ago
Voicemail crying in the corner again.
Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 3 hours ago
iOS had exactly this.
Rentlar@lemmy.ca 2 hours ago
Makes me want a phone tree…
Thank you for calling. Are you trying to sell me something? Press 1 for yes, 2 for no.
Am I in trouble? Press 1 for yes, 2 for no.
Could you just have sent me a message instead? Press 1 for yes, 2 for no.
homes@piefed.world 2 hours ago
don’t most smartphones do that nowadays?
I mean… it was pretty great several years ago when it was new, but it’s a standard feature in most smartphones now, yes?
Diddlydee@feddit.uk 2 hours ago
[deleted]homes@piefed.world 2 hours ago
it’s been a feature on my iPhone for 3-5 years
9point6@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
I’ve never seen any phone tell me why someone is calling, only who
Frankly, I’ve gotten to the end of many phone calls and still not known why someone thought they needed to interrupt my day with a phone call
homes@piefed.world 1 hour ago
I get how you feel, but the social construct around mobile communication communications started to evolve very quickly, and then mid 90s. I know, because I was there. From when and where and why to call someone on their cell phone, when texting was appropriate, and a lot more stuff on top of that that has continued to evolve even until today.
The social etiquette has evolved, but I also relate to something else that may be affecting you: getting a little older. Not being so “in touch“ with the goings on, that you feel a little bit left behind. I can definitely relate to that.
Every issue you raised in your comment is actively being considered, it’s just that not everybody is up on the latest ways to deal with all of that. But there are ways to do with that, too.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 16 minutes ago
My system is better and cheaper:
Phone always on DND. Wife goes through all else can go fuck themselves and write me.
Noone else is important enough to disrupt whatever I’m doing just to tell me shit that could’ve been an email.
