I like how you put it where (you thought) nobody would look.

It’s either very very small or very very large.

I never fully grasped the true scale of a single galaxy (and then expanded that understanding to the observable universe) until I hopped in my ship in Elite Dangerous and actually set off to cross one. Holy fucking shit, does it really help put it into perspective when you’re traveling between vast galactic arms, hopping individual stars 50-70 Ly at a time and trying your damndest not to stretch yourself too thin in fear of running out of scoopable fuel/stars.
If I were an Astronomy teacher, Elite would be my most profound and precious tool.

You really should eat that banana before it goes bad. I see spots on it and one area looks soft and bruised.
Nima@leminal.space 3 weeks ago
I can’t seem to find the banana all that easily.
…your mom though. she’s clearly visible at this scale.
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
This would be funnier if there were a gigantic banana floating in space
tomiant@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
That’s peanuts to the Universe!
OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
You got me. I leaned in to find the banana.
Solano@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
I need a red circle to show me where the banana is.
AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
There’s a red circle the size of Earth in there
ekZepp@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
That would spoil the fun, would it?

This reminds me of an Italo Calvino short story about a guy doing backyard telescope observatory space viewing (whew) and he spots someone holding a sign on a distant start stating “I know what you did”. The viewer now starts calculating exactly where he would have been at the time including light speed and distance light travels to reach him and all sorts of other calcs until he determines the time in the past and finally realizes “Whoa! He saw that!?”.

Hey! Why’s that koala smiling?
altphoto@lemmy.today 3 weeks ago
I saw one but don’t know if its the one you added.

A couple problems here:
Nice picture, but I call BS 🤔
roguetrick@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
This guy honestly doesn’t believe in panbanania.
starik@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
The theory that the universe was seeded with banana life by an intergalactic precursor race of bananas? It’s possible, but so far there is no hard evidence, and I don’t think OP is claiming to have taken a picture of an alien banana.
LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Of course this isn’t our galaxy, that’s why OP was so kind to add the missing banana for us
Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
Pinch to zoom, brah.

“Computer, enhance!”
jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
How do you know bananas don’t exist outside of our galaxy?
rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
That second point just isn’t true. We have pictures of other galaxies
XTL@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
With bananas for scale?

Cool!
anomnom@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
There could be a teapot in there somewhere though.
starik@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Let’s assume there is one until someone proves otherwise.
Natanael@infosec.pub 3 weeks ago
Pretty easy to get an Andromeda shot that includes banana for scale
DancingBear@midwest.social 3 weeks ago
If the universe is infinite, there most certainly are bananas on an infinite number of planets.
stupidcasey@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I don’t believe you, if this isn’t our galaxy how did he get the banana in the picture?
Routhinator@startrek.website 3 weeks ago
Every banana in existence is in this picture.
