You might be onto something
- Comment on What are the most confusing false friends from your language to another that are spelt exactly the same? 1 week ago:
Greek: Ναι (ne) means yes. Greeks often move their head up and down to say yes.
Bulgarian: Не (ne) means no. Bulgarians often move their head up and down to say no.So if someone says ne and moves their head up and down it could be a Greek saying yes or a Bulgarian saying no. In reality the movements are not the same but it would probably be confusing to an outsider.

Some ideas:
- Chill out inside
- Get some frogs (or other butterfly-eaters of your choice) and carry them around at all times
- Move to a concrete jungle where all annoying natural life has been exterminated
- Comment on Do YOU consider Kanji difficult? 1 week ago:
I haven’t tried learning Japanese (precisely because of Kanji) but what you’re describing in English is also the hardest part of English. There are plenty of languages where you can easily spell and pronounce words you’ve never seen before.

Many people do video calls too. I always get the urge to stand behind them and start doing funny faces

It’s no tocar (Spanish). The last letter is ⠗

Looking for the backstory of the frog name, here’s another gem from here.
Now, the caterpillar remains alive for a while as the baby wasps eat it from the inside, bending and squirming as it becomes desiccated and dies. These wiggly movements made the scientists think of Shakira, and thus the species Aleiodes shakirae immortalized the Colombian singer in the annals of zoology.
Zoologists are fun.
- Comment on Under the most ideal circumstances, how 'clean' is drinkable tap water by the time it reaches our taps? 1 month ago:
Now the question is, if these pipes didn’t always have treated water flowing through them (but say sea water), can they ever be considered clean afterwards? Is there a way to clean the existing pipe system?
- Comment on Earbud question: Does anyone actually like to silicone tipped earbuds over the solid plastic ones? 1 month ago:
Yeah different sizes don’t seem to make a difference, they still fall off. I haven’t tried the foam tips, maybe they’ll work better. Having to buy them extra just to try is a pretty hard sell.
- Comment on Earbud question: Does anyone actually like to silicone tipped earbuds over the solid plastic ones? 1 month ago:
I don’t understand how the silicone ones can stay in the ear but apparently they do for most people. The top example from the left side in the silicone photo is the only one I can actually wear. Maybe our ears just have a weird shape.

A good rule for picking an instance is to find one with very few blocked instances and a big number of communities. You see almost everything and It’s less likely to be deferated/disappear because it has a lot of content. Lemmy.zip is a good example. Lemme.ee was just unfortunate.

- Comment on What's has DeepL become? 2 months ago:
Sorry, I don’t get the double negative. My point was that DeepL using Ai in general is not weird or bad by itself.
- Comment on What's has DeepL become? 2 months ago:
The screenshot doesn’t claim to use LLMs though. AI could be anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Comment on What's has DeepL become? 2 months ago:
Ok I see what you mean. On mobile it still opens the translator but on desktop it’s pretty annoying.
- Comment on What's has DeepL become? 2 months ago:
As stupid as that home page looks, DeepL is one of the services that was already using “AI” and it’s a valid use case. Has the functionality actually changed?

The doors in my house didn’t close when I was a kid either (there was stuff in front of them). It didn’t feel weird at the time but I still have trouble seeing any space as mine. But this feels very light in comparison because it’s not hidden that your parents can hear you.
- Comment on "Without carrying out any actual hacking, simply by logging in with an arbitrary Google account" 2 months ago:
I feel this can be even worse when it’s not obvious the parents are going through their stuff. Kids will know they’re being watched but not necessarily how. This can really fuck with your head.
- Comment on "Without carrying out any actual hacking, simply by logging in with an arbitrary Google account" 2 months ago:
So the purpose of this web portal is to show parents a transcript of their child’s conversations with their toys. Even if you ignore all security implications of storing this data, isn’t this a break of trust by itself? Don’t kids deserve a minimum of privacy?

Out of curiosity are you on wayland? At some point teams stopped letting me share my screen (there wasn’t even a button) and it was around the time I changed to wayland so that was probably why. I haven’t tried it since then so maybe they fixed it but it was pretty weird.

- Comment on Does life have less value to people in Latin America? 3 months ago:
This is entirely speculation but the fact that there are active wars in the continent might affect how the data is classified. I don’t know how the article you posted defines homicide. There are some rules here www.unodc.org/unodc/en/…/iccs.html and it seems that deaths during war conflicts might not be counted as intentional homicides. Latin America hasn’t had many wars but had/has many conflicts involving guerrillas, cartels and political groups. Is it possible that many of the resulting deaths are counted as homicides whereas similar violence in Africa is counted as, for example, civil war deaths?
