- Comment on Flat earthers 17 hours ago:
Oh it is explained, though, but not consistently. I have heard explanations of that the light refraction makes the sun look lower when it moves away, to a point where its visibility is hidden by the horizon, like a mirrage of the sky. Another explanation is that the surface of the earth isn’t flat, but bulges slightly, like a dome, making the sun disappear behind the dome every day. I’m sure there are more explanations as well.
The thing about flat earth theories is that they always have an answer for whatever you throw at them. They are so committed to their idea, that they will invent reasonings on the spot which become more and more convoluted - often in conflict with other parts of their theory.

Yep. Doing that joke and landing on anything but ISO-8601 would be a huge red flag for me.

- Comment on Steam Machine pricing announced (from $1049-$1428 USD), reservation lists open 1 month ago:
You say “skill” but I would argue that personal motivation and interest plays an important factor.
When it comes to different things like fixing your car, cooking your food or cutting your hair, you have the option between saving money by doing it yourself or pay someone to do it for you.
Personally, I’m fine with building my own computer and I cook my own food, but I get a mechanic to fix my car and a hairdresser to cut my hair. I could definitely see the appeal for someone to get a “ready to go”-system instead of putting time and effort into picking components and building and maintaining their own custom PC.

I was at an event where we were told that some locally famous guy would tell us a story about when he discovered a murder scene.
When the event came around, it turned out that the guy wasn’t going to show up, but what they had planned was a voice recording of the story. Also, the story was 40 minutes long. 40 minutes at an event with everyone in silence - no chit chat during the story.
I mean, it was a good story, but it seemed like a lot of wasted time for an event where we could have gotten to know eachother better.

Last thursdayism: the universe was created last Thursday - everything is just precreated, memories and experience were planted there last Thursday. Nothing has been around for more than a week at this point.
It’s the same idea, pulled to an extreme which cannot be disproven, but also seems absurd enough for people to deny

Right click > more options (which summons a whole new menu) > copy > close the file explorer > open a new file explorer > navigate to desired folder > right click > paste > realize that the “copy”-button was misclicked and the clipboard is empty > close file explorer > open new file explorer > navigate to original file > repeat.
I watch this loop twice.

Even if AI somehow falls off the trend, I feel like we’ll see another stupid way to throw mountains of processing power at something. I can’t wait to see what goofy shit they’ll come up with.

I regularily jump into the comment section of minutephysics video about portal paradoxes. I will die so hard on the hill that the sentence “speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out” is a simplification where the full sentence would include that speed is relative to the respective portal.

I need answers. What is the tcp/ip part? Like are we talking Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol?Punching oneself seems like a crazy concept to begin with, but adding the tcp/ip is very confusing. “Over tcp/ip” as in “because of it”? Or are we speaking cardinal directions - he was physically above something running tcp/ip? Or is it “over tcp/ip” as in that he broadcasted it?

A part of my salary is determined by the number of hours i bill my customer, so a sick day could easily mean that I lose somewhere in the range of $100 - $200. And I don’t even live in the USA.

My wild guess is that the next step will be the coating of ceramics. Basically every plate that you have eaten of transfers microscopic amounts of some substance which has previously gone undiscovered but has terrible consequences for the human body.
Wild guess, no knowledge to back up anything.

Norwegian here. “Sitron” is a direct translation of “lemon”. Meanwhile, apparently the English “citron” is in Norwegian called “cedrat”. So it’s extremely confusing, yes.
