Australian Federal Election Day
time for some sleep, Iāve spent the day busy and also some comfort eating
I feel like I can make plans for the future knowing there arenāt fascists in power
sweet dreams everyone š
Itās good isnāt it. Sleep well. Good dreams
The most important thing now is to see if Purple Pingerz makes the Senate
I need a guy in the senate whoās nickname is purple pingers
With all the crazy names politicians have a Senator Purple Pingaz would be a nice change
Fuck yeaaaaaah

Champers all round I reckon. Victoria deserves it. Slightly less political idiocy than usual, though thereās still plenty to go around.
Champagne for me please, and a big drink of water for the fire trucks I keep hearing drive past. Iām presuming itās my local MPs chances of keeping his seat going up in flames.
Popcorn and a nice single malt please
Wow. The Coalition guy speaking now on ABC is being amazingly honest. Iām impressed
It was a nice change from what Iāve been hearing.
Was interesting seeing how much the states swung. It was originally projected by the media that they were going to get a minority government but instead they took 14 seats from the libs.
Not as close as I thought it was going to be.
Weāll miss Antony Green. What a legend.
I guess Casey Briggs got a test run during Covid when people were calling him āthe Antony Green of deathā, and heāll be good, but it wonāt be the same.
I reckon he will grow into it.
Fuck yeah!!! Antony Green called it for Labor and WA has barely closed lmao
Canāt believe itās already been called, this is wild.
Oh Antony Green. Bless
Fascinating watching the abc at the moment, the libs wonāt own up to their mistakes and talk crap.
Itās honestly embarrassing.
Bill shorten is absolutely wrecking Palmer and the liberal lady who looks like an off brand Celine Dion.
The libs are such sore losers itās not even funny. They literally think Aussies are mugs and we should feel privileged to be ruled by them.
Itās pretty telling they didnāt have an actual MP willing to sit in the ABC panel.
Itās almost mean to subject them to the Sarah Ferguson/ Laura Tingle double act. But itās very entertaining. And a reminder that good journalism is important to hold these self-important wankers to account.
Antony has just called it.
Labor wins government, possibly with a large majority.
He what. This soon?
Peter Dutton looks to be out of his seat.
This soon indeed!
Happy with the results, now time to put my local MP through the wringer so she actually addresses the real problems.
Yes. Hopefully now they will have the spine to pass some of the environment and EPBC Act commitments they made last election
Majority government is good, they might actually get some shit done. The LNP will be very weak, like in Vic, which isnāt actually great for democracy going forward, but maybe itāll convince them that they need to be less super right wing and theyāll ultimately end up as a more moderate party. Maybe.
Victoria needs a new second party, would be nice to have a Vic only party instead of another federal organisation in Victoria.
Well, there is Victorian Socialists if people wouldnāt be too put off by them
Things have been going almost comically far right with the Libs in recent years so I hope this is finally the wake up call for them (although tbh Iād rather hope they die and thereās more smaller parties that rise up from the ashes)
Agree, a democracy needs a competent opposition to keep government accountable, regardless of which side is in power. I hope the libs choose someone more centrist and less thug for the next leader. I feel like their party has become stacked with more extreme right wingers over the last decade so probably unlikely.
As I said earlier, voters are never wrong. They canāt be.
If the far right bull isnāt something voters respond to, theyāll have to change if they ever want to win those votes back
Well itās done. I didnāt have to wait as long as I thought for the result. I was thinking Labour would win, but thought it would be a narrower result. I can rest easy tonight, and hopefully wake up to news Dutton has lost his seat.
No waiting needed then! What an embarrassment for their campaign, leader looses his seat. Hopefully they will take a serious look at the direction the party has gone in and realise itās not what Australia wants.
Itās great to have got the libs out.
But I still feel uneasy. In addition to Cheeto Chaplinās attacks the UK recently ruled that trans women legally arenāt women and are banned from womenās bathrooms, and in Australia there have been recent protests against trans people and against anti-hate speech laws protecting LGBTIA+.
Regardless of laws Australia picks up culture wars like a sponge.
Go through life trying to be decent to people. Thatās within your reach, and is an excellent start
Iām trying. It doesnāt seem to do much.
Edit: Thereās also the additional bonus of it marking you out as an easy target
Dadās involved in the counting for Kooyong. Obviously heās limited to very simple communications, but he sounds like heās having a ball
Iām very interested in the results for kooyong tbh
Done! Now show me the senate šŗ
The āliveā results on the abc news live coverage have been updated after a couple of hours of just sitting there static - Labour = 81 seats!
86 now

Right. 6 pm. Heeeere we gooooooo!
St Antony mathematics for us
Praise Antony Green šš¼ the beautiful tone of his voice fills my living room this cold night
Iām firing up the ABC on my laptop while Iāve still got a few hours before my flight. Excited
Iām settled in with a bowl of pumpkin soup and a cheesymite scroll to await some results. š¤
Iām nervous.
Wow. Turning up to Victoria and trashing it was not a great strategy for the Libs. /s
Looking forward to drinking a toast to Peter Dutton, former member for Dickson (fingers crossed).
I have a bottle of bubbly on hand and a bottle of scotch in case itās another 2019ā¦
GP appt on standby to ask for some medication for these trying times, should that nightmare come to passā¦
Iām not sure who this Liberal on the ABC is but heās edging closer to a full tantrum and I am here for it.
Iāve laughed out loud nearly every time heās talked.
Old mate is in a world of pain right now
the weird fucking thing is a labor gov is better for everyone, even old mates
Someone need to get him a scotch pretty soon
Damn, it was called early. What happened? I thought it was going to be a close one.
You know that bit where Mr Burns laughs at the injured Irishman Can someone redo that but with Dutton losing?
My train ride home intersected with a bucks party. Nice boys
Antony Green said it so itās true!
Looking forward to seeing the results, having some nachos and wishing for a better future for all of us
Youāre all enjoying the count. The polls havenāt even shut here yet
Thank god I voted early. I woke up feeling both barrels of the New Sickness one of the boys has. To top it off, he didnāt want me in the bed with him after I gave him medicine after 1am so I went and slept on the couch.
Last thing Iād want to do whilst sick and after a terrible sleep is my civic duty.
I always forget that the seat of Bradfield exists.
The Bradfields are my people. There has been at least one famous one

Even though I care not for the spud, after Trump and the shenanigans about stolen elections, I am proud that I live somewhere where elections are called and there is some basic civility around the gracious defeat speech then the victory speech. This might be the bottle of bubbly talkingā¦

He handled that well, I can give him that. On whatās clearly a challenging day for him personally, heās been quite dignified in defeat

I think we sometimes forget how good it is here compared to other Global North countries, especially in regards to elections, and our voting rights.

The book From Secret Ballot to Democracy Sausage has a great history on voting in Australia and how it compares to other countries

It was nice to see a regular professional concession speech again.
