Old wonders: I wonder how they did that?
New wonders: I wonder why they did that?

“What the fuck were they thinking” for both, but with a different tone.

      Aliens must’ve done that

I’d try that. Any food should be given at least one attempt to be awesome.

Don’t knock a ham, banana, currypowder pizza. It’s a hangover classic for a reason. Although I prefer a chicken, pineapple, banana, currypowder and peanut pizza.

Honestly, I’d give either of those a shot without the banana.

the banana is what makes it good though

Sounds like one of those Indian pizzas you can get on Oak Tree Road in New Jersey. I’ve considered attempting to make Indian pizza for my wife, but I’m worried that my Texas ass would make her eternally sad.

This is Pizza Africana, which you’ll find on Swedish pizza menus as surely as you’ll find Quattro Formaggi or Hawaiian.

I wish that in 2026 we could stop hating on people who do things that make them happy without affect us.

In Rise of Nations modern-era wonders are science projects like space programs and supercolliders.

The LHC is absolutely a recent wonder.

I once used to watch TMNT as a kid and sometimes the show mentions what were then considered the strangest pizza toppings ever sold.

There do exist Nutella “pizza” but I consider them to be more pastry than pizza.

    source
    • StThicket@reddthat.com ⁨18⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I’ve had pizza with whale meat. That was really tasty.

The strangest pizza I’ve had was bacalao pizza. (bacalao is a fish dish with salted dried fish, tomato, onion and potato). It wasn’t bad, but i wouldn’t call it pizza.

My brother once served me pizza with kale as topping. That was interesting.

The most unique pizza I’ve ever tasted was a pizza where the “dough” was actually a piece of dry fried cheese, with a bolognese sause covered with cheese. Calling it pizza was an insult.

I’d think the reason we stopped engaging in national scale single focus construction projects is that nations that relied on national scale conscripted labor didn’t prosper as well as ones that didn’t.

*Note: I don’t pretend to be educated enough to actually back this up, nor do I have any underlying political point. Just thinking with my thumbs.

    source
    • HK65@sopuli.xyz ⁨21⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Flevoland was a national scale pseudo conscript construction project on the scale of the Great Wall. Bit more useful though.

The Dutch in the 70s oil crisis told all their freshly unemployed people to grab a shovel or they don’t get unemployment, and now their country is a tenth bigger.

      source
      • HeHoXa@lemmy.zip ⁨13⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Yeah, I’m not sure it really holds up. I initially wanted to say “slave labor”, but that gets tricky compared to chattel slavery, which mostly was not what built the wonders.

I’m surprised to learn just now that the conscription rates compared to population are much lower than I would have thought, 1.5-2.5% during pyramids area, just double modern US military service.

But the mortality rates performing the labor are 100x modern US military service, which helps my point about it being slavey.

Are those kiwi slices mini nuclear reactors?

    source
    • countvon@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

I thought they were banana slices. Kiwi would be even more cursed, which I didn’t think was possible. Either way, kind of it to warn us of the danger it poses! Biohazard symbols might be more appropriate though.

Everything is just built to be the most utilitarian and more importantly cheap they can be now. Something that kicked off the lack of beauty in our architecture was a paper written by Adolf Loos in around 1913 called “Ornament and Crime”. Naturally, the arguments he made were nearly all rooted in racism

Loos introduced a sense of the “immorality” of ornament, describing it as “degenerate”, its suppression as necessary for regulating modern society. He took as one of his examples the tattooing of the “Papuan” and the intense surface decorations of the objects about him—Loos says that, in the eyes of western culture, the Papuan has not evolved to the moral and civilized circumstances of modern man, who, should he tattoo himself, would either be considered a criminal or a degenerate.
