Jesus. I’m not in the EU, but how is this the first I’m hearing about this?
Time to go back to email and GnuPG.
Tryenjer@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Because they’re trying to suppress the public reaction.
gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 1 month ago
yeah i keep thinking, we’re not getting around the law. we have to get an effective implementation though by using 3rd party platforms, i.e. ones that don’t conform to legal pressure.
JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 month ago
Never forget that Epstein was talking about fucking children in plaintext on Gmail and they did nothing whenever you see politicians say encryption should be illegal so they can capture criminals.
andros_rex@lemmy.world 1 month ago
If they wanted to do anything about pedophiles, they could.
removed is in the Netherlands, an EU country, right? A website that has hosted child pornography for more than a decade (Amanda Todd killed herself in 2012? They took it down for a little while after that whole “global network of guys raping their sleeping partners and uploading it” thing earlier this year, but it’s up again. I doubt it would take more than 10 minutes to find illegal content on there right now.
It’s all a farce. It’s entirely possible to target individuals making and distributing CSAM, but it’s much easier to do nothing and use it as an excuse to spy on citizens.
BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
It makes much more sense when you realize that most of the old, white men with money or political power are the ones looking at those sites.
WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 month ago
I’m only holding out on going KoS on ANY politician because I still need to be alive to do some things.
I have no ethical or physical issue with grabbing one of them, and dragging them into a bush.
CausticFlames@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
If I ever, ever somehow end up living in a world where it’s not possible to communicate with someone digitally and be completely encrypted, if we get to a point where you MUST put your ID into signal and have the government scan all signal messages, I’ll probably just kill myself.
And take a few politicians with me at the very least.
ivan@piefed.social 1 month ago
Oh, come on.
You can still DIY shit like Meshtastic
CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Been building out a mesh network bit by bit locally. Its pretty cool.
Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
I mean, that’s hardly realistic for most people.
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 month ago
… where it’s not possible to communicate with someone digitally…
I’d be thrilled to go back to that, if what we’re getting now instead is the only other option. But, I grew up in the before-times, so I’m not so put off by the idea.
OwOarchist@pawb.social 1 month ago
You’re still getting surveilled in real-life conversations … if anyone in the conversation is stupid enough to bring their phone or other ‘smart’ device (including any modern car).
UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 1 month ago
You cannot ban cryptography, so the messenger is not the problem. You can control computing hardware tho…
CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
Check out Briar and Meshtastic
Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Great, teach mesh computing to an elderly relative 10k miles away that can’t even log onto a banking website
gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 1 month ago
better idea: communicate irl. and also we need proper end-to-end encrypted chats that exchange public keys from device to device directly (NFC or QR code) (which requires physical meeting).
architect@thelemmy.club 1 month ago
I don’t know a single person in real life that can maintain a conversation about this. And I keep looking.
kayzeekayzee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago

mrmisses@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I hope you live in DC. Or Florida.
cecinestpasunecommunication@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
To be fair they do seem to think it would really catch pedophiles; why else would they exclude themselves?
Manticore@lemmy.nz 1 month ago
But what would be the point? Nobody’s doing anything about the high-profile pedophiles we already know. And kids have a bunch of other more common needs that are being conveniently ignored. The maths ain’t mathing
cecinestpasunecommunication@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
I’m just calling them pedophiles.
lmdnw@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I say, “Arm up and kill authoritarians.” Likelihood is that you’ll also kill lots of pedos at the same time.
Juniperus@infosec.pub 1 month ago
Sure would be nice if we could reform economically instead. Not that I feel bad for the pedos or the tyrants, but a lot of other people will have a very bad time if shit really hits the fan without some sort of economic plan in place.
gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 1 month ago
the brainwashing of the last 20 years has been incredibly effective at distracting people from everything important. people didn’t talk about the economic situation because all the (looks around) instagram and distraction schemes.
architect@thelemmy.club 1 month ago
Shit is going to hit the fan. This is all unsustainable.
cecinestpasunecommunication@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
Yeah. Sucks we don’t have anarchists building power and survival systems outside state and capital’s control.
cecinestpasunecommunication@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
That’s not true. Don’t assume you’ll get more than line two before they get you.

How are you defining “triggered”? I keep seeing it used this way, and it makes no sense.
vane@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It’s already done Sir. Our private data is again being scanned by US corporations to protect our children.

It’s being scanned by everyone and everything that has access to scan it. Probably your own government too, even if you have laws supposedly prohibiting that.

gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 1 month ago
under the ocean maybe? return to the sea. the whales did it
Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 month ago
We won’t we will block the air intake and exhaust and entrances and exits in these billionaire bunkers and rebuild the world as stewards of the earth. To do this we will have to identify and diagnose narcissism and psychopathy to treat it as a disease rather than reward it.

genuine question, im not in the EU, how would this affect self hosted/federated E2EE chat services like Matrix and XMPP?
lavander@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
As always in these cases… it depends if backdoors will be mandated. Maybe not in the first version… maybe in the cond or third… you need to make people to accept things a bit at the time
