Add-on question: when using a fork, do you put the points on the plate (or stab a piece) and then use your knife to push food onto the downward curve of the tines (I would say the back but that’s because I don’t do this) and lift it points-down?

Or do you carry food on the concave curve of the tines (as well as stabbed on the points of course) and lift it points-up?

This is cultural, neither is incorrect, but it might affect your choice of fork.

Depends on the food tbh. If it would fall out using the coop method then I point down and push it into the tines.

Peas: point down and mash into tines

      Mashed potatoes: scoop 'em

      Steak: points down to stab

Whether you switch hands or keep it entirely in your left

What about me who just keeps it in my right

Use a kwhat? Fork and plate alone so you don’t have additional items to wash.

I’m doing it the latter way. I chose 1.

4 looks better balanced and crafty enough. 5 looks like a dessert fork

They are all good since they are all single extruded so no food remains getting in between the metal part and the plastic/wood/other

Though, we could argue that 1. is better that the others for the easy grip due to its in-curved handle. Or that its diametrical opposite, number 5. Is the best thanks to its filleted handle making it easier to hold in the case of the food scooped by it not being very hard.

    source
    • eldain@feddit.nl ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

But only 2 and 5 look post processed after extrusion to remove sharp edges, while the others don’t. I have cheap cutlery like this and I don’t like the feel.

      source
      • BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

        That’s true

        1. has that large bolge at the end and is very thin where the gripping takes places making it feel w3ird in the hand

So it looks like 5. wins this contest

Anyone interested in developing a “Find your ideal fork” web app?

I for one would be very interested to see statistical preferences…

    source
    • Opisek@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Sounds awesome but I don’t know on what metrics you could qualitatively categorize forks, except for some obvious ones like prong length, handle start thickness, handle uniformity, …

      • ijon_the_human@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Damn, I already have more ideas.

        source
      • ijon_the_human@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

I have a couple of ideas but I don’t know which would be the easiest.

We could analyse and break down forks to their design features and then let people mix and match. This would take a lot of time though.

Alternatively we could scrape a bunch of fork images and build a large dataset. Then show two at a time to users and let them pick their preferred one repeatedly until we know the preference hieararchy for that user. Then compare users and divide them into demographics.

I guess it would also be possible to have a visual model and some edit options like make different parts longer / thicker. I feel this is unnecessarily complicated.

Another idea would be to break the fork into two or three parts. Not perfect but faster than exploring all design features. Tines, body, end for instance and let people either mix and match or do some for of a/b testing.

My expertise is in design so I can help with those aspects but coding I unfortunately cannot do. Would be a really fun project designwise too…

5 and I know this because it’s the fork that lives in my room at all times because it’s my favorite fork and I don’t like when someone else dirties it or misplaces it. It’s my desk fork. Always ready for leftovers or door dash. It’s the perfect fork.
