My favorite Kurt Vonnegut book is ‘Mother Night.’ At one point a white supremist teams up with ‘The Black Fuhrer of Harlem.’ An FBI man asks the white guy why he’s working with an African-American?

“We both agree that the wrong people are in charge.”

A lot of racists love race. It is why they’re racist. Race is what means certain people belong in certain places and others are not.

It also obscures class consciousness: the underlying reason racism is such a popular political tool for any given ruling class.

There’s a really good song by Body Count that gives that message: (when it comes to the poor) No Lives Matter

        …body count!..now that’s a name i’ve not heard in a long, long time: a long time…

I wouldn’t say that the ruling class loves racism, but when the people are looking for someone to blame they’d understandably rather throw minorities under the bus than lie down themselves.

I love my race, it is the best race on the planet. It has invented so many things. I am proud of my race.

And when I say “my race” I obviously mean the only race that matters: the human race.

    Everything else are just variations.

Such intolerance of Neanderthals is truly concerning…

      source
      • UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

The hypothesis that early humans violently replaced Neanderthals was first proposed by French paleontologist Marcellin Boule (the first person to publish an analysis of a Neanderthal) in 1912

Racists think there is some sort of hierarchy among groups/nations, of which of course their own is at the top.

Doesn’t matter where the racist are from, Asia, South America, North America, Europe, Africa, …

They always believe they belong to the cream of the crop, and use different specific statistics to prove so.

But that is just dumb login. In reality there are only 2 groups: normal people at the top, and racists at the bottom. Even the most useless non-racist adds more to humanity than the best racist.

Racists add so little to society, they have to pretend skin colour is important.

Racism is a cancer on humanity that should be cut out with a huge knife.

  • BudgetBandit@sh.itjust.works ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

The problem is that even without malice in one’s words and action, the recognition of race itself is considered racist.

    • dogsoahC@lemm.ee ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

That’s because the concept of biological races has been thouroughly debunked. I will never understand why Anglophones still insist on using the word “race”.

      source
      • renzev@lemmy.world ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Because nobody is talking about biological races when they say “race” any more? Race as a social construct exists just as much as gender. If you simply pretend that race doesn’t exist, you aren’t being anti-racist, you’re choosing to close your eyes on the racism that’s still happening.

I have two half-Thai cousins who live in Florida (natch) and they are flagrant white supremacists and anti-immigration, despite having been born to a Thai immigrant who only recently became a US citizen. For bonus points, one of them happens to look generically Central American and the other looks Japanese, so they got lots of shit growing up for being a variety of different races. You would think that might have made them sensitive to people on the receiving end of racism, but nope - I guess it just taught them how to do it.

    source
    • UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

When you’re surrounded by people with a certain ideological point of view, its very easy to go-along in order to get-along. Often, being more racist is a mechanism outsiders will use in order to prove they’re part of the clan. When you don’t have your skin color to prove your racist bonafides, you need to be outspoken to let your racist neighbors and coworkers know that you’re on their “team”.

You would think that might have made them sensitive to people on the receiving end of racism

Abuse begets abuse. Treat someone like shit and they’ll learn it is acceptable to treat other people like shit. The only way to curb the cycle of pain is to discourage the behavior. That’s what it means to “Go Woke”, in the end. Standing up to bullying and protecting the vulnerable means interrupting the process of indoctrinating the next generation in the violence of its elders.

  • pyre@lemmy.world ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

look I’m not in favor of discriminating against people based on what race they’re a part of but also I’m a race realist; I think pretending all races are equal and there’s no difference between any two races is ludicrous and against all empirical knowledge we’ve accumulated over decades.

of course some races are better than others and one way or another, one race will have to be, for lack of a better word, “superior”. again this is not a condemnation against anyone who may be a part of one race or another, or even multiple races. but if we consider historical achievements, we would have no choice but to accept that bay to breakers is simply the superior race.

to be truthful I made it so deliberately obnoxious that it’s unfair to expect people to suffer through. I knew it would go underwater but that’s the only way it could work at all. no fun if you see it coming.

    • needthosepylons@lemmy.world ⁨4⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Not only do I highly doubt the validity of your argument, which an overwhelming majority of scholars would disqualify based on its implicit assumptions (although not the idea that a hierarchy of societies exist at a given point of time), but I also strongly think it has no place on Lemmy. To see it hasn’t been moderated yet is a surprise - an unwelcome one.

There are so many terms today that are so over used that they have become meaningless. There are still actual racists. Unfortunately there will always be racists. But you minimize that real problem by shouting “racist” at anyone who disagrees with you

I can’t think of anyone with a more direct answer than Martin Luther King - “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Anyone who judges someone by the color of their skin is a racist

I’ve not heard it overused. Now, if your definition of racism is “has a deep hatred of some race” then I can see why you’d think that. Most people don’t hate other races, we just do the occasional racism without even thinking about it.
