Now if only they stepped up on Linux compatibility, I’d actually be using their launcher like I used to on Windows.
Anon loves GOG

What is this nonsense about Linux compaitibility they have tons of Linux compatible games. On any game you own they let you download a Linux version if it exists.
AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
They don’t have a Linux version of their launcher, and don’t have a system to automatically configure Wine/Proton for games without native Linux support, which is most of their library. There’s nothing in the licence of Wine or Proton that would stop them just reusing Valve’s work, which is why third party launchers like Heroic can do it.
diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
If they have the launcher on all major platforms, it will be an excuse to cut the standalone installers. Be careful what you wish for.
rockerface@lemmy.cafe 2 weeks ago
“Steak too juicy” type downside. If they were looking for an excuse, they could just stop supporting the standalone installers.

My favprite part is the installers.
I just installed a 2004 sierra game and the installer yhrew me back to the early noughties, and it was just lovely. That green progress bar and the wildly outdated game ads was wildly pleasing.
foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
I need a second HDD for storage of the GOG installers I have and it’s killing me that I can only run a handful of games at a time. Stupid small SSD. Currently have two installed, NMS and Zero Dawn and I’d love to finish the Witness at some point in this century. Ugh.
LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
Are they compressible? You might have luck gzip or bzip2 compressing the .exe files.
LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
I don’t like how it insists on admin privileges
crypt0cler1c@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
I love old keygen software and fucking 2000/xp era aesthetic so much
Jankatarch@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I heard it doesn’t localize prices as great and if true, that’s the only actual criticism I can physically think of.
SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
They do, but their regions are not aligned with Steam, so for a lot of people in many countries, it’s 3-4 times more expensive than on steam.
It does not matter for AAA titles, as those scumbags charge the same price across all regions in steam anyway.
But for many mid tier and indie games, it’s a tough ask to get someone to pay 10% of their monthly income for a game they can get for 3% of their income on steam.
It’s the only thing stopping me from buying on GOG
iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 2 weeks ago
What do you mean? That they charge the same for a game in poor countries as in rich ones?
Mwa@thelemmy.club 2 weeks ago
they only support fewer currencies??

I loved this misuse of intensifiers. Not shade-throwing, was just a legit lol for me :D

GOG is the GOAT, it’s the only game marketplace that I know that allows you to OWN your games. But sadly a lot of games aren’t there and I have to go to steam as backup
wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
🤓 Um, akshually you still don’t OWN the games, it’s still just a license (has been since at least the SNES era if not earlier). The difference is that since you can digitally maintain your own complete DRM free copies of the install media, it’s the physical equivalent of “having the game cartridge” (for old systems without online patches). In other words, if the company says the license is no longer valid then they can’t prevent you from installing/copying/backing-up anyway.
It’s just important to note that depending on your local laws, it’s still not true ownership, but more like “possession”.
ourselves@slrpnk.net 2 weeks ago
The word “own” in this context refers to the fact that you can keep a private copy of the game for yourself. What you are arguing is that the consumer does not own the copyrighted assets used.
It’s like saying that even though I bought a Toyota Camry, I don’t actually own it because I’m not allowed to make a copy of it and sell it. You could use that logic to say no one really owns anything. Maybe youd have a point, but not really in the context if what anyone else here is saying.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
You literally download the install files onto your pc.
Even if gog went down forever, you get to keep those files unless you delete them.
adhdsergio@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Well that sucks if so, but still, if it doesn’t stand in the way of using the games offline I’m happy so long as the software police doesn’t know on my door
rumba@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
GOG first, but If i buy it on steam and I lose access to it, I will find a working copy.
dubs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
I pretty much only buy my games from GOG, or Itch. I think I’ve bought ~1 game per year from Steam. Proton has been great for linux gaming, and I love my SteamDeck, but GOG lets me keep my games, and doesn’t give me shit for wanting to “play 2 games at once” like Steam does.

Everyone forgot that they tolerate nazis amongst them?
ddplf@szmer.info 2 weeks ago
If one AI generated email is enough for you to drag such conclusions forever, then boy you’re gonna be really upset when you dive into valve’s problematic rabbithole.
Mwa@thelemmy.club 2 weeks ago
the only problematic (or criticism) thing i know about Valve is TF2’S neglect and the problems with them bloating it with maps, cosmetics, etc and they still make millions of that
also CS2 having cheaters and missing half of the content from CS:GO and thats about it
rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
Considering that Valve is headquartered in the US and not known for being especially antifascistic, I’d be rather surprised if that’s not also true for Valve/Steam.
Mwa@thelemmy.club 2 weeks ago
if smth like that happens, might give GOG a try(or another game store).
davetortoise@reddthat.com 2 weeks ago
Wait I never heard of this, what happened?
Mwa@thelemmy.club 2 weeks ago
IIRC they apologized for it.

Also make a little wrapper script around steamcmd and you can have your modlists however you like. No update breaking it, just playing.

Baffling how much of the gamer community lines up to suck Gabe Newell’s billionaire cock when GOG is out there doing it way better
vivalapivo@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
Without this billionaire we wouldn’t have had Linux gaming
Given this, his recent stance on Trump is bigoted and steam’s contract with Palantir was coming out of nowhere.

bertlewirth@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
they’ve been saying for over a decade they’re gonna build a linux GOG Galaxy client. I’ll believe it if it happens.
Mwa@thelemmy.club 2 weeks ago
hope they dont vibe code the client, or smth idk.
jinwk00@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Why not just use Heroic? Has GOG support
pory@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Personally, my favorite thing about GOG is that I don’t need a client at all. I can access my whole GOG “library” without a storefront launcher app installed on my computer. Since I keep the installer files backed up, I don’t even need to sign into an account. If I wanted a storefront/launcher app in between me and the games, Steam is a better one. GOG is for launcherless DRM-free games.
iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 2 weeks ago
This comes up every time GoG is mentioned. I feel the need to say that I am sorry that this is important to you and not getting attention, NAD also that it doesn’t matter to me at all.
hanrahan@slrpnk.net 2 weeks ago
they should just chip in some $ to help Heroic
