Comment on Anon loves GOG
AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 1 week agoThey don’t have a Linux version of their launcher, and don’t have a system to automatically configure Wine/Proton for games without native Linux support, which is most of their library. There’s nothing in the licence of Wine or Proton that would stop them just reusing Valve’s work, which is why third party launchers like Heroic can do it.

Fair enough, I’ve never really thought of GoG as a launcher, to me it was always more of a storefront.
I actually play most GoG games on Steamdeck through Heroic Launcher and only ever had minor issues with the games not registering SD controls.

Oh, I’m using Heroic for that too, it works well enough. But I was using GoG launcher before switching to Linux, even for Steam games and other storefronts. I would like to keep using it on Linux, hence my previous comment.
I appreciate the enormous work Valve has done for Linux gaming, but I’m also somewhat concerned about Steam being the only storefront that also combines with a Proton-compatible launcher. GoG could be a real competition if they added that option.
