I mean if your parents didn’t have kids, you don’t exist and thus cannot have kids.

The term for the statement in formal logic is “vacuous truth”
The statement is true, because the antecedent can’t be

Checkmate rationalist…
…or is it?
Caption@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
*How would it be checkmate when he doesn’t exist? Think, people, THINK. *
Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
Yeah, it’s technically true lol
If your parents were infertile than you wouldn’t exist so you wouldn’t have kids either.
Nothing in that sentence implies that you not being able to have kids means your parents couldn’t have kids.

What if your parents were adopted?
yakko@feddit.uk 3 weeks ago
Adoptedness is only partially heritable; if one of your parents is adopted, chances are you’re 50% adopted too.

Someone needs to start taking out billboards with direct quotes from this dude and Trump.
No slogans or message, just their own words.
elucubra@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
I have always thought that billboards should be one of the main political messaging tools. The FOX crowd live in a resonance chamber, but they can’t avoid driving or walking by billboards. Intelligently designed billboards can be devastating, and can’t be tuned out.

This man is a GENIUS!
Since I genuinely cant tell yet if this site is smarter or dumber than reddit, let me point out the fact that this is obvious sarcasm.
JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
There is no longer any belief that is so outrageous that you can’t find many people that genuinely hold it. Plain text is bereft of the unconscious social cues that could get around that problem, so there is no way to tell sarcasm just through print.
manefraim@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
This is a corollary to Poe’s Law.
Caption@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
You’re not 100 percent wrong. But if something is so ludicrous that you cant possibly imagine a person actually saying it, it should be obvious that it is sarcasm (assuming youre reading it in your native language).
Also, you talk about social cues, right? What about deadpan comedy? There are 0 social cues. The jokes are spoken exactly the same as when they speak regular dialogue.
But really my main point was “I dont know if the people on this site are dumber than, as smart as, or smarter than the people on reddit”. Because reddit is filled with so many pseudointellectual virtue signaling shit bags and the moderation is a joke. I got permabanned for crossposting a text post from one subreddit about a specific topic, to another subreddit about the exact same topic. I read every single rule on the main site and both subs after the ban and I didnt violate any. So I wasnt sure if I NEEDED to point out the obvious sarcasm, because as I said, no matter how obvious it is, some people are too stupid to see it.
Anyway I appreciate the intelligent well written response. That’s already a step up from redshit.
