You have every right to make shitty jokes, just donât be offended when no one laughs.

Oh, but he would be. He is that kind of guy.
VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
He is. Thatâs like his whole act nowadays. Suuuper lame.
Delphia@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
But thats just it and what most professional comedians are talking about. They dont want you to be genuinely offended or upset, but if you go to a comedy show or watch a 60 minute special. You laugh at 55 minutes but get offended at the 5 that are about a topic YOU are sensitive about, that 5 minutes wasnt all of a sudden serious statements meant to be taken seriously. It was all jokes. They dont owe anyone an apology because they didnt like parts of their work. They KNOW that not everything is going to land for everyone. If 90% of the audience are laughing, you are killing it.

Keyword: professional.
These last few years have seen old comedians finding it hard to update their style. Theyâre the ones hyperfocusing on people not finding their jokes funny, at this point. I defended Dave Chappelle at first, but it seems his standup has become the feel sorry for me hour.
I think Ricky Gervais especially exaggerates how offensive his material is just to have something to talk about. Carlin is a prime example of bitchy old man humor done right. But thatâs just my opinion.
socsa@piefed.social â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I think going to see a comedian perform live, there is a certain level of consent to be exposed to controversial or offensive jokes, especially if they are known for that kind of thing. The problem is when that leaves the comedy club, and stops being a joke, and becomes âcoverâ for actual bigotry disguised as a âjoke.â Far too many people think that because itâs funny when a professional says it in a stand-up show, it must also be funny when uncle Steve says it at Thanksgiving.
There is also the issue of punching down, and how that changes when you go from being a working comic doing small shows, to being famous and on Netflix. This is Chappelleâs biggest issue imo. The guy who made Half Baked isnât the same guy who made Chappelle show, who isnât the same guy who intentionally picks on trans people for shock value.
yesman@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
When is the last time he updated his material? Heâs out here still spewing that new-atheist line like his mind is powered by Reddit circa 2013.
Ricky is his persona. A dim man, in a fortunate position, over his head. Heâs a stuffy old âya dadâ medium-level bigot like Archie Bunker; heâs only able to get a laugh by being the joke.
I once saw a podcast or something that had Ricky, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, and Louie CK. Now Ricky wasnât the only shit-head at that table, but he did stand out sharply when back-lit by all that talent.
zikzak025@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Now Ricky wasnât the only shit-head at that table
That might be putting it mildly
ivanafterall@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I also watched that discussion and agree that he belonged there even less than Seinfeld, who is very rarely funny, but is at least tolerable on a conversational level.
hperrin@lemmy.ca â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
This is so intensely cringe.

Any time anyone mentions Ricky gervais this picture should be posted. Thank you for performing the service.
All should know the deep cringe.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Wooooow.
howler@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I love a lot of his work, but he is insufferable. Its like he never got all of his edge lordiness out of his system when he was a teen, and now he is doubling down.
thesohoriots@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Heâs good enough as a writer when paired with Stephen Merchant, who presumably balances the edgelord side out. When left to his own devices, howeverâŚ
grrgyle@slrpnk.net â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Canât stand him anymore, but his delivery has always been good imho.
But he just doesnât get it. He thinks slinging shit at âsacred cowsâ as actual literal fascists are forming ranks is somehow fair play. Like, itâs not illegal, but you should know that some people are taking real sides in this, and to them jokes are more ammunition in their culture war.
In a better world Iâd agree to sling away, but I think because of his privilege he doesnât see how tenuous the situation is (I didnât either back in the day).
cunnililgus@sopuli.xyz â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
My first experience with him I remember were some atheist clips of pretty much a convo youâd have in your head, very edgelord, very cringy to share, especially from older dude.
Then I saw some of his shows, which were very nice.
So I feel conflicted about him. I think he knows well, just is an OG edgelord hating just for the love of the game.
HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
If youâre looking for offensive british comedians, just go for Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle. Theyâre actually funny.
binom@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
god i miss frankie boyles new world order :(
J92@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Never offered real fixes for the problems but made you laugh at the fucking state of things.
DisgruntledGorillaGang@reddthat.com â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Jimmy Carr is horrendously unfunny though
HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Personal opinion but I can understand it.
SaraTonin@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
A few years ago James Acaster did a bit in his stand-up about Gervaise: youtu.be/UHqma3rx-xI
If you want just the Gervaise bit without the lead-up, go to around 2:30
Denjin@feddit.uk â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Thatâs not fair, comparing Gervais to someone with actual talent is just mean.
PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
The call of someone who cries when people actually do get offended.
I have free speech to hurt you, but you donât have free speech to hurt me
Kinda shit

Battle_Masker@lemmy.blahaj.zone â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Eh who cares about whatâs upsetting him
Fluffy_Ruffs@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Someone actually took time to make that image.
TheRtRevKaiser@sh.itjust.works â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Letâs be real, anybody who would make that image doesnât have anything better to be doing anyway.
CallMeM@lemmy.ml â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
i like him - and lets be real: there are a lot of people his age that post cringy stuff like thatđ¤ˇđźââď¸
QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I miss r/comedycemetery, this would fit so well
FosterMolasses@leminal.space â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I think Lemmy has one but it kinda misses the mark (also dead, ironically lol)
rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Like anyone believes for a nanosecond he didnât make that image himself.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
It sucks because Extras was such a funny show
Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Used to be, then what happened?
ivanafterall@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I realized the âinsufferable turdâ shtick wasnât an act. Heâs a perpetual edgelord.
ratel@mander.xyz â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Yeah used to be a big fan of his too - Animals, Politics, Extras etc⌠then he did a Netflix special going on about how you canât make jokes about anything anymore and ripping on trans people just to get people to react and I was out. IDK what it is with Netflix specials and these comedians complaining about being cancelled despite the fact theyâre saying it on the most popular streaming platform in the world and they decide that some lame jokes about trans people is the best way to demonstrate their argument. Fucking weak.
Slovene85@sh.itjust.works â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
PixelatedSaturn@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
He is the kind that slowly becomes more and more conservative and less and less funny and then cries about how he got cancelled on a talk show.
ChicoSuave@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Bill Maher Syndrome
ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I remember watching Talking Funny with him, Louie C.K., Seinfeld and Chris Rock. It was really interesting and funny. Neither of those guys is watchable anymore. Incredible.
FosterMolasses@leminal.space â¨4⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
You can just say Dave Chappelle lmao
