The grades one pisses me off.
I’ve seen so many people become disillusioned with university because their professors were bad and the grading was absolutely inconsistent. To say it’s that simple is a gut punch to them and it drives me insane.
Mustakrakish@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Grades as a judgement metric is outdated as fuck and no one wants to admit it. The goal should be to learn, not be judged. If you get something wrong, you should be able to correct it until you understand it. Passing a class should be connected to learning the material, not memorizing for a few tests coreectly.
tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 months ago
Modern educational practices have been moving toward skill-based metrics, as in “you should be able to achieve this standard” in order to pass a class (and gets scored on a rubric that reflects skills, rather than some arbitrary “minus 0.5 points for spelling”). As always however, what is best for students is often at odds with what’s achievable in the way schools are designed and funded in a society.

Trying to my insurance license, I have learn a shit turn of martial so I can at least get a 70 on a test. That all they care about. On top of that once your license they don’t care what your score is. Lady teaching this course said that she knew a lady failed that test 16 times before passing.
But also 15% to 20% of what your tested on and is the hardest to learn is commercial. And 99% of what you learn won’t be relevant. My former boss at State Farm said that to me. Says we don’t do things the way you will be taught. But couldn’t tesch me their way until I was license.

That requires the teacher actually know what they’re talking about. Which would make them extremely qualified, meaning they would have to be paid well. It’s working as intended. School is meant to create robots that clock in on time.

A lot of factors of one’s success are totally out of their control too. Also, I don’t think their success is really something a kid should be worried about manifesting yet

Mommy and daddy wouldn’t argue so much if you weren’t such a little shit.
shalafi@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I’m sure arguing with my ex about my little shit kids. Every summer my wife and I have to teach them basic shit like “please” and “thank you”. Their mother thinks manners are for hoity-toity people. No lie. She made fun of me for basic manners.
These fucking animals are 10 and 12 and still chunk food all over the floor when they eat. “Fuck does your mother do?!” “I dunno. She cleans it up.”
And now we take them back to momma this weekend, just when they start acting decently.
Last year they started to learn to swim! On their last day here. Mother is afraid of water and intends to protect them from drowning by instilling fear of water in them.

Parents’ Divorce betrays the irony, (Though speaking of my parents divorce, my presence and neurodivergence certainly figured into the escalating contention between them. That’s a different – probably TMI – story.)
I’ve grown up with sincere propaganda with similar sentiments, and it appeared to get worse at least through the aughts. I think millennials saw them as ironic. Zoomers appear to find them as laughably absurd as the you’re neighbor may be a terrorist propaganda. My Alpha grandson is taking it seriously at 11. Alphas are figuring out early that it’s all a myth to cover up they have nothing to hope for ( at least until revolution goes hot).
In fact, I’d say the serious versions all the signs that we are, in fact, in a YAF dystopian coming of age model, where the society is trying to mold us into replaceable, expendable laborers and soldiers to be expended on billionaire vanity projects (which often appear as nationalist military action or corporate commerce). Your story as a kid is to find a way to escape the paradigm, either to join the Rebel Alliance, or become pirates and hackers…
…oh wait, unless you get abducted by ICE / Sicherheitsdienst des Reichsführers-SS and stuffed into a concentration camp to be disposed of later. Then you’re just fucked.
If you don’t escape the paradigm as a kid, then welcome to the resistance. You’re one of the isolated rebels like Winston Smith in his corner out of sight of the telescreens, keeping his journal. Also like me. Still working on that. Not sure if I’m going to go Weiße Rose or La Résistance
You may be held responsible for all these things, even if you’re often not to blame for them or had a way to actionably evade their harmful consequences. Seventy-seven million Americans voted for a regime that is going to have a far greater impact on our lives than many of the typical personal life choices we make. There Are No Rules Any More. Mired in the Rot in Denmark, to thine own self be true.
In this fucking world, I do not begrudge anyone their tequila, or cigarettes, or their crack pipe, or their poor diet, or their ten terrabytes of pornography…or their arm full of scars.

Kids, just so you’re sure, this is a shitpost and you are NOT responsible for your parents’ divorce.
The only reason they increasingly shouted at you in the run up to the divorce was that their marriage was falling apart and divorce is one of the most stressful things that ever happens to people.
Geodad@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I’m sure there are some kids who hate a parent and play the one against them.
davidagain@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Having kids can be stressful, but if you don’t play a largely united front and allow the kids to play manipulative games against your partner, don’t communicate, take sides and turn on each other, one or both of you is snide and used the kids to undermine the other one.
It’s still not the kid’s fault if they were brought up to tolerate and play emotional games against family members. Kids start off life completely self absorbed and have to be taught to be kind, share, think about other people and prioritise relationships over things. No toddler knows this. All functioning adults do.
chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I have seen a divorce caused by the presence of a kid.
Coworker and her husband adopted a teenager who had issues. He started physically assaulting my coworker and she didn’t feel safe in the house and wanted the kid gone. Husband said they’d made a promise to care for and love him. In the end, he chose the kid over his wife and they ended up divorced.
Also - I first heard this story from her when she had a breakdown about it on my first day at the job when I went to ask for the key to the supply closet.
