saying âshalomâ or ânamasteyâ or âholaâ as a non-native speaker was an irritating âhipâ thing to do when that movie came out, and thatâs a scene where Peter Parker is trying repeatedly to be âhipâ and failing spectacularly.
hmmm đ

wait is it genuinely irritating to sprinkle in greetings/thanks/youâre-welcomes in other languages cuz i do that a lot cuz i like learning new words đ„ș
pancakes@sh.itjust.works âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Unfortunately you are not allowed to speak in tongues outside of those you were born into.
Also nice username.
Varyk@sh.itjust.works âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
yea, itâs irritating by way of inconvenience, especially in monocultures like the states, but it isnât wrong or a âbadâ behavior, so go for it.

Sludgeyy@lemmy.world âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Depends on context.
This is the same idea as answering the phone with âTalk to meâ which is generally from a pompous arrogant character.
Like âIâm here, what do you have to say?â
ZOSTED@sh.itjust.works âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Howdy howdy howdy!
I honestly canât stop greeting people like this, even though Iâve never stepped foot in a place where it doesnât snow
interurbain1er@sh.itjust.works âš1â© âšmonthâ© ago
All the people Iâve met who did that also happened to be irritating douchebags. Now whether there is a causal relationship and what is the direction of that relationship, I canât say.

Iâve lived in Texas as long as I can remember, but I was born in California.
Spanish finds itâs way into my everyday speech constantly.
My family is white as fuck, but my mother became fluent in college.
I took Spanish in high school for my foreign language credits.
While Iâm not fluent, Iâve worked closely with people who primarily speak Spanish with a little broken English.
The little bit of Spanish I recall, and the little bit of English they know, allowed us to work together.
Is that irritating?
Varyk@sh.itjust.works âš1â© âšmonthâ© ago
no, speaking a second language to communicate with others isnât irritating, especially in the southern and SW US, where Spanish is so common.
Jiggle_Physics@lemmy.world âš1â© âšmonthâ© ago
why did you feel that someone, using a foreign word, to look cool, was similar to you using a second language, to communicate with its native speakers? Honest question here. That seems like a big leap in logic to me.
taiyang@lemmy.world âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Ya know, given recent events, certain people have made me aware that I often say shalom, call my baby daughter âbubbyâ and use other words like âschlepâ and âschvitzing,â as though Yiddish was evil. They are, of course, assholes.
Natural, Iâll continue to use those words because I was raised on Mel Brooks movies, especially Men in Tights, which is a goddamn classic.
Early_To_Risa@sh.itjust.works âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Many Yiddish words like âschlepâ are so mainstream that it doesnât even register with me.
GraniteM@lemmy.world âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
âYouâve got a little schmutz on youâ just feels like the right way to tell people thereâs an unspecified substance on them.
PaellaVacuum@reddeet.com âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Isnât that one Dutch?
VelvetStorm@lemmy.world âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Doesnât bubby mean grandmother?
taiyang@lemmy.world âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
So apparently it can be both Grandma and baby, and I have no idea why. I did double check, though.

I could have sworn I watched this but I donât remember the plot of the movie, let alone whatever this is. I feel like the only thing I remember from it was him telling the girl to make him different cookies.
Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world âš1â© âšmonthâ© ago
My takeaway from bad Peterâs sad attempt at being cool and edgy? A jazz bar dance? Strutting? But if you think about it, this Peter was raised by a very elderly May and Ben . His idea of hip music is the swing jazz that Ben could have played, his idea of cool is May and Ben watching old James Dean movies. This Peter is an absolute dork, event when heâs trying to be cool

I always read symbiote spider man in this movie as Parker with the confidence to act how he thought would be cool. And he thought it would be cool to answer the phone in an unexpected way.
TachyonTele@lemm.ee âš2â© âšmonthsâ© ago
Thatâs exactly what it was. He wasnât supposed to be cool, he was doing what he thought was cool. I donât understand how people watch the part of him walking down the street finger gunning everyone and miss that.
