Go ahead, write your 3D engine in Python. I dare you.

I wanted to write software renderer in turtle as a joke sometime ago but I only did a spinning cube

Never underestimate my self-loathing and my desire to write the most unusable piece of shit.

How many games write their own 3D engine anymore
mycodesucks@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Not enough. It’s why they all need so many fucking resources and why you need to spend $1500 on a video card for a game that could run on a 15 year old GeForce if the developers put any effort into optimizing anything.
sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
You know the majority of LLM stacks are in python, right?
We already live in that world, basically.
Python LLM training produces models that are then refined into things that 3D engines plug into to do AI upscaling and framegen, and then different python trained models use more python to interface with MCPs to write more slop extentions and games and other programs.
Its nearly literally an ouroboros.
fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
It’s funny that you think Python is anything else than a wrapper for real languages that get shit done.

I love C++ as a god defying monument of backward compatibility. You can go through the versions like an archeologist looking through layers of rock to see what trends of that time. There’s not only one way to do the thing you want, but several, too many ways, and no one can stop you from frankensteining pieces together that were never meant to be.
If C is meant to be a basic toolbox, C++ is your dad’s disorganized tool cabinet he keeps in the garage. Overflowing with barely used, highly specific, and redundant tools.
fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
And every one of those tools can kill you.

The point of C++ isn’t optimization, but rather that one only pays for what one uses. Experience in C++ leads to using the features of C++ that are appropriate and conscientiously eschewing the rest.

I understand C++ better than what C++ coders say online fr
Much love

The point of C++ is C, but with extra footguns.
resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 3 weeks ago
Try OO C and you see why C++ is the way it is.
Stroustrop’s first cut of C++ was called “C With Classes.”

By that logic, if your English language essay gets an F it’s the English language’s fault?
eestileib@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
I got paid good money to write C++ for several years.
It is a shit language, and people love it for the same reason that they love being in a fraternity with hazing rituals.

Isn’t that the role of Rust?
Tattorack@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
This feels like that XKCD comic.
“There are 14 competing standards…”
ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
Not really, the role of Rust is type/memory safety, you can still have unoptimized games. Also Rust is more complicated.
Verse, Scratch and GDScript are video game scripts.

Would be a bit weird expecting all those C++ people to use a language that will be invented 27 years after the language they chose to learn?
cobalt32@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Yes
DupaCycki@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
You’d be surprised how few game devs actually touch any code. It’s not just artists or designers. Even the ‘programmers’ increasingly rely on visual tools instead of coding.

Fuck C++. IMO the Microsoft Windows of the programming languages.

this is why we should only use python :)
so great for programming, with no downsides. why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?
i’m a genius, i know.

Yes, it’s called Odin.

I like C++ but then again, I am just a modder so I have no idea what it’s actually bad at since it does everything I need and it’s easy. I’m not writing whole big programs that serve a huge company or anything. Hell, I ain’t even making entire games.
FavouriteShapes@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Still need to learn this one but I have no time on top of uni course. I guess I’ll pick it up next July
red_tomato@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The whole point of C++ is to graft Object Oriented Programming into C like some Frankenstein’s monster because OOP was the big hype.
C++ being performant is mostly a side effect of it being based on a language created when programs were still punched into paper cards.
Eggymatrix@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
That was the point 20 years ago. These days it is pivoting to compile time functional programming
Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 weeks ago
What does that mean ?
iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 3 weeks ago
C++ has a lot of terrible language features because it would allow some 8 bit embedded CPU to dynamically change from LSB to MSB ordering in the middle of decoding some input. 🙈

does anyone actually follow whatver the comittee sees as best practices?
