In the context of biblical history, I’ve heard that, because of the Alexandrian empire and it’s 3-4 off-shoot kingdoms, Greek was actually the ‘Lingua Franca’ (default language for international communication) throughout the middle east; from before the Romans arrived, to Jesus’s time, to until after the Roman empire split in two for good.
I guess it is hard to supplant an existing Lingua Franca. France today is a good example - they are very defensive of their language, once the Standard Internationale, and so France sees less English speakers proportionally than other European countries such as Spain, Nederland and Germany.
So… The middle East’s dominant languages were Greek and Persian, Greek and Persian, Greek and Persian - then Muhammed shows up with Islam, and they conquer surrounding states. Arabic is spreading. And this is testament to Persia’s linguistic domination, right - Arabic calligraphy comes from the Persian alphabet. That’s bonkers; a group of people, B, subjugated by A, manages to get A to assume their script for all writing.
At that point, the whole(-ish) middle east now had a different alphabet - neither greek nor Roman - to write in. Languages don’t tend to change their script once they’ve settled on one. The only examples I know are Poland, who did it because of catholic church’s influence , and Mongolia, who were forced to by the soviet union; it doesn’t happen naturally. Oh also Turkey, which was again a government mandate.
Certain scripts are better for certain language sounds; I don’t expect Arabic will ever be written in Latin script in general practice.

They’re pretending to not understand that you mean Latin was the language of catholic church, Roman state, law, medicine, mathematics and thus the script for (almost) all European alphabets.
There’s genuinely a toxicity problem on Lemmy, probably ingrained in many users from years of Reddit usage. 😮💨🥰 but DW about it.
Technically it is not the “basis” of languages but with contextual knowledge it’s so easy to know what you really meant by that. It’s “the basis language for European civilization,” perhaps. Written on heraldry, churches, buildings and artifacts all over the continent.

Yes, a fair point. That is part of what I was wondering actually - is someone who exhibits that behaviour doing so because a young adult is adjacent to a teenager, in their eyes?
Your observations bring us onto some natural follow-up questions.
- Is Leonardo DiCaprio, for instance, someone suffering from ephebophilia and toeing the line legally? Most of the internet seems to think so and seems disgusted by his dating habits.
- If a young adult is non-minor, should we tolerate much-older adults only dating young adults? If not, do you think it should it be solved with a sliding scale of “acceptable dating ages” based on your own age, or merely with social punishment (e.g “cancelling”) - or is it a non-policeable issue?

Wow what a stupid reason to not vet/background check someone? That’s actually a scenario I’ve wondered about before but I think all the places where I live aren’t making that mistake (hopefully)

Yeah, also it’s outrageous because American style/insurance based healthcare generates extra large profit margins and the system doesn’t even capitalise on that by transferring the surplus down to the nurses - the actual legionaries of the Healthcare machine.
And some few people try to argue that nursing is easy, so anyone could step into the role (it’s not) - but even if that were the case, it’s:
- A “human contact” role; things like flight attendancy, car salespeople and many other things, they get duly compensated just because they provide the human face in a system that would otherwise be massively uncomfortable to interact with.
- A death facing role; anyone who has to see people dying deserves a lot of compensation for the psychological/mental health risk - NO job has this higher than nurses. Especially if we count people literally transitioning from alive to dead. Jobs like Morticians, Train drivers, Firefighters and soldiers are highly compensated along for the same principle.
- A high risk role; you risk probation constantly if you do something wrong or are thought to have done something wrong. You have to challenge doctors and other nurses on their decisions and be right when you do that.
- Communicating with disabled and foreign people role - it’s just tough. People all across industries are paid more to work with the disabled and try to communicate with foreign language speakers. Nurses are paid their same basic rate.
- Possibly a healthcare advisory role? We tend to consider advise giving and mentorship as a quality worthy of salary raise, both in the private and public sectors.
- on that note, In the case of my country, UK, it’s effectively a public servant role. Now while this does have favourable retirement conditions, it would, in bureaucratic roles, provide exceptionally bloated salaries for what the job at hand really is. Sigh.
- When they strike, healthcare is harder to access. If they were organised they could strike a lot (or do semi-strikes so as to not let patients die). I imagine that the US system in some part works against this. We get a lot of NHS strikes in the UK.

Remember all, that capitalism is not designed to reward hard work and talent.
Even if you assume it was implemented with good intentions in mind, capt. was designed around the assumption that employers are already being perfectly generous and fair, tirelessly seeking out the most capable talent - including people more capabke than themselves - to work with them. I however assume it evolved naturally. Though there aee some cases where a country will try to “re-implement” or reinforce adherence to a capitalist system after it slips away.

I’ve never met a “femcel” - as in a woman with poor social skills who stays inside and games a lot, perhaps lacking optimism about their romantic prospects and overall destiny - in my life so the whole concept did strike me as weird. Seeing the “femcel” subreddits, twitter pages and Instagram pages, all it reminded me of were the toxic girls from my hometown who essentially scared off new prospects by being so rude to them and CLEARLY chose their lifestyle very early on.
I therefore think femcel is a misnomer. I think generally women aren’t getting hung up on men in an incel-ly way - the ones that do skip straight to stalker serial killer lady - I think women are good at socialising and always have some sort of support system.
