Because England and Western Europe kicked out the prudiest of the prudes half a millennium ago and our cultures evolved accordingly.
Why is the approach to nudity and sex in films and tv so vastly different between the US and Europe?

Our chief weapon is surprise! And a ruthless efficiency. Our TWO chief weapons . . .
daychilde@lemmy.world 3 days ago
On the contrary, the Spanish Inquisition would generally give a 30 day written warning before showing up.
bedwyr@piefed.ca 3 days ago
What do you mean save for spain? The colonists and later the US residents HATED the dons, which is what the aristocracy of the spaniards were known.
Aaron Burr actually was trying to mount a private invasion of mexico to make himself emporer of it when his political rival, Thomas Jefferson, whom he lost the presidency to by one vote, (electors, eatch congressaman and senator got an elector back then,) and instead was elected vice president prior, (second highest vote getter for prez was vp then,) had him arrested and charged under false charges to get rid of his rival.
Burr remarked prior to all of this that jefferson moralized on all subjects yet was a piece of shit in his own life, I’m paraphrasing.
Anyway, the trial was a spectacle, Andrew Jackson came in on Burr’s side, (Jackson was even more of a piece of shit than jefferson but that’s another story.) There was a big camp on Burr’s side. One notable purposefully bumped into jefferson’s hack supporter on the street during the trial, made a scene, and challenged him to a duel. Shit was hot. Burr got a not guilty verdict. Forget where the trial was but I think fed court in virginia but don’t quite recall.

In this case, it really is just because Americans are prudes.

There can be exceptions to the rule, but there are plenty of indicators with problems occurring in the current film and video game markets that spell out Americans would soon let children see graphic violence than the hideous abomination that is the human nipple.

Have you seen their American versions in comparison to the European ones?

If you look closely enough at the FCC, you’ll see it’s just three mormons in a trenchcoat.
WolfmanEightySix@piefed.social 3 days ago
FCC?
TootSweet@lemmy.world 3 days ago
“Federal Communications Commission”. It’s a U.S. agency. Originally established to make sure radio broadcasters play nice with the “commons” that is the radio frequency spectrum. Radio and TV stations have to register with the FCC. WIFI wavelengths are under the FCC’s jurisdiction. That sort of thing.
But they decided that their jurisdiction also extends to deciding what’s too “obscene” to be allowed to be broadcast over the air waves. Cable TV is out of scope because the signal travels over wires rather than over radio waves, and so in the U.S. the rules for cable are much more lenient.
But yeah. Any content made for TV that would go over radio waves (even if it also goes over cables) basically has to follow FCC’s rules for morality. And they’re pretty strict. Such shows can’t say “shit” or “cock” or “pussy” whatever. (Though the FCC is kind enough to make exceptions for if you’re unambiguously referring to a rooster when you say “cock” etc.)
Lots of artists and content make reference to how strict the FCC is. For instance, I think this is a song from Family Guy about that (but YouTube says it’s “inappropriate for some users” and I have to log in to confirm my age, but fuck that.) I think the FCC is even a running joke on Family Guy. Also, Eminem’s song “Without Me” also says “the FCC won’t let me be, won’t let me be me so let me see. They try to shut me down on MTV…”. (Though when it comes to Eminem, they may have a point. Lol.)

Federal Communications Commission - The US federal organization responsible for approving broadcast content since 1934.

Yeah, Frank, Christopher, and Carson. They like to get together and dress up in one large trench coat. It’s very silly.

The Federal Communications Commission. It’s a US government agency that regulates all communications broadcasts (TV, radio, Internet, satellite, etc.).

The USA is a country rich in history for developing crackers and breakfast cereal to prevent masturbation.
Most US kids will see a brain exploding from a headshot long before they are allowed to see a nipple
CADmonkey@lemmy.world 3 days ago
“Boom, Headshot!” comes long before “Boom, Head” in the US, sadly.
Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 2 days ago
The US was settled by several Christian versions of the Taliban. They still seek to control by religious edict while not living it themselves. Nudity, sex, women as people are all problematic for them.
0x0@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
Vastly different cultures. Even within Europe.
Some sexualize nudity, others don’t.
bss03@infosec.pub 3 days ago
The colonizers that founded America (the puritans) were the people from Europe that hated sex and nudity.
The love of violence came later, but was the American will ever since manifest destiny and the Monroe Doctrine.
As an American born in 1980, we’ve always been the crazy ones.
IWW4@lemmy.zip 3 days ago
Americans are equally terrified of and obsessed with nudity and sex.
Gaslov@lemmy.world 3 days ago
I think Americans are mostly terrified of European nihilism and don’t want to fall into the same trap.

How does “European nihilism” manifest in a way I can examine?

IDK, I just think that movies where the actors are having sex that competes with porn movies is incredibly stupid and boring and doesn’t add anything to the movie. It’s like if we had similar scenes of the actors taking a poop. Like WTF are we seeing that for?
It’s not edgy, it’s not liberating, it’s just stupid and boring and honestly 99 times out of 100 off-putting.
IDK why the fuck they do it? One thing is if it’s a short clip, that an be OK, but in some movies these clips a freaking LONG, like yes we get it, they slept together, does the scene have to be sop long so I could go to the bathroom and not miss anything?Or am I weird, do people find it hot?
Usually in European movies it’s shorter and done more elegantly, American movies it’s becoming like hard core porn.Steve@communick.news 3 days ago
If it’s off-putting, it’s not boring.
If it’s off-putting, it literally is edgy.
If one represses something off-putting, it’s very liberating to reveal it.You’re right about one thing. You don’t know why they do it.
Buffalox@lemmy.world 3 days ago
It’s off-putting because it’s stupid, and being stupid is nor edgy.
makr_alland@lemmy.world 3 days ago
American movies it’s becoming like hard core porn
Which ones? For, you know, fact-checking. Because all the US movies I’ve seen lately show a lot more violence than
lovesex. Maybe you’re just watching 80s movies?HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 3 days ago
American movies it’s becoming like hard core porn.
lol what the hell are you on about? The only non-porn movies where I’ve seen a actual penis actually go into a actual vagina, have been European. French mostly. And its not like there’s one or two of those, there’s like a dozen of those every year.
jerkface@lemmy.ca 3 days ago
Why don’t you cite concrete examples so we can have a rational discussion instead of everyone just responding to the images in their own head?
MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 days ago
Because US is prude.

What’s the difference? I’ve seen American and European movies and didn’t notice any striking differences in their approach to nudity or sex.
shittydwarf@piefed.ca 3 days ago
The people who settled America were puritans who were hung up on sex, while Europeans are more normal about it
bedwyr@piefed.ca 3 days ago
Yeah, but it’s bigger than that. The dutch sent all of their religious extremists here for instance, they rounded them up at church one sunday and herded them onto ships at the point of a bayonet.
A lot of religious crazies came here, and helped convert more weak minded fools while here. Evangelicals being the main problem now.
LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 days ago
More normal… still kinda weird though.
pmk@piefed.ca 3 days ago
In a way “kinda weird” is still normal. People in real life are kinda weird, we have different things we like, not just missionary position for the purpose of procreation. There’s collars and vegetables used in non-culinary ways, toe-sucking and fantasies and handcuffs, etc. Normal people often do kinda weird stuff.
