Those goods in US stores were all designed in the US originally, and made in China. Now maybe they tweak the design, but they didn’t come up with it, wall street gave them all of our tech to save a buck on labour and environmental, and not have to mess around with any of those pesky democratic norms.

The dollar store sales are often the defectively designed products, as are all the manufactured goods for that matter, the redesigns are to save money on materials. Less of this, cheaper of that, to the point it breaks and then you buy the same product so many times it cost more than if they still built quality for more money.

Dollar tree is the only one left in the US, where I’m at, that still adheres to the principle, charging 1.50 now per item excepting the 5 dollar aisle. The rest are what you describe in Australia.

In the US, Dollar Tree is the only one adhering to the dollar store principal, now at 1.50, (giving you a real measure of inflation, that in 10 years it went from 1 to 1.5,) while the rest charge much more for everything, being no different in price and quality from kmart or target, if not more expensive.

Indeed, without competition and regulation the free market doesn’t work, and never has.

The manufacturers are in Trusts, secretly cooperating on not competing and maximizing profit at the expense of consumers and product and service quality.

That said, we still shouldn’t buy their shit when possible, and to disable problematic things when possible, (which is a federal crime, introduced in the 90’s at the behest of CD companies/record companies, whereby any type of digital lock cannot be broken without suffering 4 years in federal prison.

They already do with remote starts with some vehicles. I forget which.

Also some cars I think use your phone as the key, so if you lose your phone, it breaks, is hacked, turned off, stolen, etcetera, you can’t use your vehicle.

The UK is perfect for heat pumps too I think. I know they improved for colder areas but ten years back at least they could fully heat a place in the Pacific Northwest which is pretty similar I think in temperatures. Whereas I was told in the continental climate west of the cascade mountains in the us you would need to supplement other heat.

If it keeps happening, search your ip on the internet blacklits, just search that and click on the site and they will do it for you, there are several dozens.

After multiple emails and other sign ups were immediately frozen, leaving me unable to get an email even, I checked and found I was on one, all I did was read the news and comment on social media, and work stuff. I think Israel is putting people on there that piss them off.

I got a violation, (never banned yet but went through maybe 10 accounts in 3 years of use,) one of the later ones was for suggesting Musk should ride his spaceships up into orbit.

Apparently it’s threatening violence. Appeal denied.

They have ads? Joking but I never saw any with firefox on ublock. So at least I screwed them back a little, but they got all my comments for free, no small thing adding up all of our contributions, worth more than the ad revenue in many ways.

I miss getting help with all sorts of stuff, home improvement and repair and how to stuff, brewing, growing stuff, and the like. Plus they have way better animal videos, to say nothing of all the other video content not found on lemmy.

Can’t be helped, reddit is unusable, politicians and rich dickheads are leaning on them to make moderation decisions and they are trhing to bend us over for them.

It matters because it’s a pr stunt and if we take their claims at face value it falsely proves their tech is not overplaying their capabilities, which they are, and further justifies their borrowing.

I figured it was PR for these companies, trying to show how advanced their tech is, because they have failed to meet their hype and investors are selling off their bonds at a loss.

It is definitely that, but it could also be what op is saying here. That’s the way these oligarchic deals work with government and big business.

I.e. The government wants to ID everyone on every account using the internet? They let tech get their grasping hands on that information as they collect it to use for business.

Washing in cold water is best anyway, hot water sets stains. Unless you have powerful odor you need the hot to help kill the source of.

All cycles end in cold for that reason but it’s too late already for some clothes if you wash in hot, or even don’t rinse out a stain in cold water when it happens.

It’s not lead now, it’s other stuff. It’s worse now, or soon will be. PFAS alone is an unimagineable nightmare.

They combine industrial waste with sewage and spread it on fields for ffertilizer. They stopped enforcing the runoff laws that prevented algae blooms from like back 50 years back. To say nothing of the extra round-up.

For instance, in the last 30 years, insect populations worldwide are down 90%. That is new, and even though we don’t have rivers catching fire at the moment, or lead in the air, it’s worse in many ways.

I take your point though, but the progresses made are being reversed as we speak.

Idk about the silica, it’s more that it’s just not something that’s available than health concerns, I looked it up a long time ago and the internet said it was safe.

I was just thinking there could be other substances that are available to a person that could work, like straw or something even, idk.

Ziplocks are not all that secure. I had like a huge amount of aspen oyster mushrooms in ziplocks, here in the upper midwest, and they molded, even though they were dry. Same with other stuff. The humidity just seeps in somehow.

There has to be something to add to soak up moisture like the corporos do with that silica bullshit.

For like 40 bucks you can buy a sealer. It doesn’t work well though. Best to not use plastic at all. I hate plastic.

I learned that in my first official job. Being a good worker just makes you a sucker. I still am a good worker, the best usually, but I have rarely even gotten an attaboy for it. Luckily I am self (un)employed now for some time.
