Speaking as a vegan who has gotten legitimately emotional before because I love lobsters as creatures and they deserve better: who the fuck thought this was a good idea. Who thought this was going to tug at heartstrings instead of loins. Who thought this was going to unlock compassion instead of new fetishes. Who thought people weren’t going to want to fuck the lobster.
PETA’s marketing campaigns fucking baffle me.
architect@thelemmy.club 2 weeks ago
Their marketing campaign is literally to get attention and it works better than anything else to drive funding for animal rights. If they aren’t around people would literally forget animals get abused. They win by making you all argue. I’m not sure how you ever fix that.
pomegranatefern@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
You raise an interesting point. I tend to think of campaigns like this as kind of worthless because they don’t feel like they’re going to persuade anyone vs. ads that I would personally consider more persuasive, but you’re not wrong that this sort of thing is getting a million more views on the internet than something that might be more individually persuasive but only reach like 20 people. I guess that’s why they do it.
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
Okay but what is the point if they’re gonna blow the money on more baffling marketing campaigns?
pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Based on a PETA video I saw by someone I watch, PETA literally kills dogs (like wayyyy more dogs than normal animal shelters do)
lastweakness@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Wasn’t this debunked before? Like, the numbers are correct but there are valid reasons for it?
Absolute_Slayer@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
PETA forces people to become vegan from the start, and if someone doesn’t want to, they make it impossible for them to live. Their mentality is like a cult, and a lot of vegan supporters are only in it for attention.
socsa@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
Like I hate to say it mate but have you hung around and vegan spaces on the Internet? This kind of shit is honestly not that far off brand. It feels like every week there’s some new insane thing like trying to make captive, domesticated pets vegan, or deciding they don’t actually like bees, or unironically cheering on alpha gal syndrome.
Raiderkev@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
A friend of mine fell down that rabbit hole and started feeding her cat a vegan diet. Poor thing died at like 5 years old because that’s not what they’re supposed to fucking eat.
GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Yeah, there are saner ways to make the case for veganism. Like, for example, the planet being on fire because of post-war government bailouts for beef and dairy conglomerates scamming an entire generation into thinking that milk was mandatory.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’m convinced at this point that PETA members just have an exhibitionism fetish, with all the nude/nearly nude stunts they do

The point is we saw it. Their stunts rarely get covered anymore. They had a message and we all got it albeit covered in nudity, red paint, and i imagine a lot of ghee.
cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
There was too much coverage of them killing pets and being horrible. Now it’s just the grifter leadership and a bunch of “Save a cow, eat a furry” types who haven’t figured out a better group to be a part of. Plus being a vegetarian is easy and excepted these days.
CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
I accept vegans, if they don’t push it on me, and don’t act more righteous than thou.
Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
PETA is not known to make rational decisions. Especially with those kinds of stunts.

You wouldn’t eat a lobster… if you could fuck it instead
You wouldn’t download a webpage… wait, no, hang on…
You wouldn’t take a photocopy,… no, wait,…
You wouldn’t hit a drum… no, I’ll get there,…
You wouldn’t steal a march,… no that’s not right…
You wouldn’t copy an AI’s proprietary output,… no something else, something else
You wouldn’t punch a ticket… nope
Oh I’m no good at this. The Federation of Arsey Copyright Tattletales won’t hire me.

Was talking to this woman on tinder. She told me she was vegan, and I instantly stopped caring about meeting her.
Like, it’s just performative bullshit. And it’s hypocritical. The only reason you can even BE vegan, is because society has advanced to the stage that there is enough varied vegan foodstuffs available that you can passable survive off it. But that doesn’t mean it’s all simple, like grains and veggies. No, half the time they’re eating this super specialized, water-intensive crops and laboratory grown shit with energy-intensive production cycles that actively harm the environment. It’s not some ultra-enlightened approach to living, it’s just a thin veneer of ethical consumption based entirely upon other heavily industrialized processes.
It’s bullshit. and you’re better off just eating mostly vegetarian, with meat being a special occasion thing, like it’s been for the majority of our species time on this earth.
Baleine@jlai.lu 2 weeks ago
Nah cuz how can it make you this mad 😭😭😭
jpreston2005@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
mad? I just think vegans are fanatical and full of themselves? Kinda like sidewalk preachers… like, they could be preaching just love and the new testament teachings of jesus but… they’re still assholes.

jpreston2005@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
oh dang, if my observations were so easy to disprove, you’d think you would do it 🤔
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
I mean… you’re not wrong, but I wouldn’t quite say it like that.
I’ve dated a girl who was very much into it, though she wasn’t a full vegan, just a fairly strict vegetarian, for the same reason you mentioned (i.e. some of their meat replacement products just being ultra high processed food science experiments), and the fact that you can easily eat vegan without eating health (French fries are technically vegan as long as they’re fried in veggie oil).
I’d basically consider it a nerd hobby at this point – I’ve had some very impressive vegan stunt food, like vegan McMuffins that tasted better than the ones from McDonald’s (albeit at 3x the price of course), so I can certainly can’t hate on their dedication to the cause, because that takes a lot of passion.
But yeah, from a practical point of view, most people are likely better off with your recommendation, because it’ll get you at least 90% of the way there without costing you half of your income, and it’ll probably still achieve most goals that vegans are after (better health, less pollution, and improved animal welfare).

“The victim in this tradition,” is the one who have to smell them being steamed in the grocery store.
You ever grill one of those fuckers alive? DE-LICIOUS!!!
Comrade_Spood@quokk.au 2 weeks ago
I am convinced that peta is a psyop by the meat industry to trick people into thinking animal rights activists, vegans, and vegetarians are crazy and thus make people dismissive of their arguments.
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
I’ve definitely heard worse conspiracy theories.
socsa@piefed.social 2 weeks ago
Or is it a psyop to make us want to fuck lobsters?
Comrade_Spood@quokk.au 2 weeks ago
Two things can be true lol
ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Was that not already confirmed? I very vaguely remember hearing about something along those lines from like a whistleblower or something like that.
Idk I could also just be hallucinating. I’m on like 4 hours of sleep 🥴
Comrade_Spood@quokk.au 2 weeks ago
I’m pretty sure it was confirmed for some environmentalist stuff and oil companies. Like when some “activists” threw soup at a Van Gogh painting, I’m pretty sure that was actually an oil company trying to make environmentalists look stupid. But I am also too lazy to try and search for sources rn so obviously take that with a grain of salt.
