It’s mostly rural vs urban. Not uncommon to hear red small town people, who have never visited the blue population center of their state call it a crime ridden tax drain (lol) and vocally support secession.
Meanwhile their towns are full of drugs and family annihilations.
I truly believe the rural population here has it 100% backwards regarding whether urban or rural areas are safer.
Go watch some bodycam footage. The wildest shit is all rural red state stuff. It is bad out there and they believe (very wrongly) that it's worse in the cities.

My mom said she would never raise a kid in a small town because there is nothing to do except get in trouble. All her cousins either went to jail or got pregnant young, she figured a city has opportunities, summer jobs, libraries, rec centers, things to keep kids occupied and out of trouble.
You make a good point. I remember when I was about to start school, my parents moved us to a rural area because they felt it was safer for raising children. The house we moved into was two doors down from a meth lab on one side and a pedo on the other. That was in the '80s.
Of course, crime’s always going to happen when you take away resources and intentionally impoverish the citizens. But it gets even worse when the cops use a gun to solve every problem they come across.
That’s my Dad. Hasn’t been to a big city in 20 years minimum. Still convinced Chicago/LA/New York etc are violent third world cesspools.
I never expected this, but it’s happened many times:
I live in a small town and my daughter just graduated from college in Detroit. When I tell people where she went to school, many of them are like “OMG REALLY?” “Weren’t you scared for her?”
I just tell them “Not at all! It’s a really nice city, and she’s thinking of moving back out there!”
Which is true, and it blows their fucking minds.
It’s weird because I have a vague impression that in prior centuries, tenants actively shunned and mocked rural folks aka “country bumpkins” and such. But these days it’s very much the other eay around. Rural folks are terrified of the city and city people don’t think about rural folks at all.
The county isn’t really divided by state lines, it’s divided by: urban v rural, college educated v non educated and rich v poor, as well culture, ethnicity and religion.
I would say the “heartland” of America is relatively culturally homogeneous, and many, if not most people from the heartland definitely seem not to like or trust the Pacific Coast states or the Northeast/Atlantic Coast area. If there’s a big political divide in America I’d say it’s more the interior v the coasts and big cities v small towns than red states v blue states.
Yes. My mother in law has repeatedly wished for the destruction of my home state (very blue), to my face, and said “I wish your family wasn’t out there.” This woman lives in a mobile home in literal swamp and has only left the state for some college football bowl games. Real classy.

Many do. Many people living in blue states despise their neighbours too. I’ve always found it odd that people who hate half or more of their countrymen call themselves “Patriots.” It’s bad enough that they rationalize hate, but to somehow twist that into a caricature of love, it’s just very contradictory.

It’s also the most normal thing ever. When have there not been regional rivalries and antipathies? Nation states have only been a thing g for like five minutes, historically. Local and regional identity has always been more important and it still is. If anything’s off in this picture it’s probably the notion of a “nation state” being a fake construct that people never actually bought into, not that people have somehow lost their ability to think like countrymen. They never knew.

You’re right, of course. But just to strengthen your point, take Oklahoma - a red state where not a single county went blue in the last election. So even urban vs rural when it comes to OK City, not even enough there to make a single county blue.
Not all of course, but when my mom (blue state) married my dad (red state) and they decided to live in the blue state, the family understanding was that the heathen harlots stole their perfect child from them. Never mind that he literally left the state on his 18th birthday looking for more out of life than rotting in a trailer.
That’s the thing. Cities are full of people who left rural areas. The inverse is extremely rare. Plenty of people in cities know exactly what life is like in those rural “communities”.
The only reason I’d even move to a rural area is to start a hippie commune. Even then I’d rather do an urban commute with a rural component I’d visit part time

I question this. I grew up in a rural area, moved to the city for a few years, and moved back to one of the “larger” towns in a rural area.
Usually while talking about my childhood with my friends in the city, they would seem surprised by some of it. Yeah, they knew the basics, as I did about the city, but actually living somewhere is a lot different than what media portrays.

It’s a culture war. This is the result of decades of talk radio preaching christian or fundamentalist or reactionary values and talking points. Ever since 2008 the economic outlook has become much worse and fascism is on the rise. But fundamentally it’s nothing new, playing one group of people against another. I’d recommend this book about political theory of anti fascism.
From a sociopolitical perspective, I very much hate red states, and I hate many of the people living in red states, but I don’t hate everyone in red states. There are many, many good people who are unfortunately trapped in those states through no fault of their own.

No. Sadly my city is a giant blue island in a big red sea, so our state always goes Red in presidential races because of all the rural chucklefucks who can’t be bothered to change their TVs from Fox News.

I live in a purple (supposedly) state and my grandfather suggested at Christmas that crosses should be burned in the yards of people who had signs up for a black democratic politician. Had no fucking clue he was like that. Haven’t seen him since.

No, not all. I actually haven’t found red state people any more polarized than blue state people.
There is a vocal minority in both places who will hate you if you don’t signal you are on the same side of the political spectrum and will stick to the party line, but a lot of them are just trying to live.
I agree with revelrous, it’s more a city/rural split. Florida is “red” now, more a warm purple but gerrymandered. Cities are pretty progressive, country is redneck, exurbs are rich conservative northerners who moved down here (the influx that moved us from purple for real to red)
My husband tries to hate on California but we have family there who love it so much they think we should move there. Chicago he thinks is a great city, we have family there too. But again, we are city folk so even though he is conservative he sees way more variety of people and is, well, cosmopolitan I guess you would say? Traveled a lot, says people are just people, all over the world.

It’s funny because Florida is so queer. I grew up going to gay bars, we had the gay film festival, literally half my kids are queer In one way or another. Why in the world would the government want to alienate such a big subset of the population? It’s insane.
If I ever run for governor though, my platform is Make Florida Freaky Again.
It’s a multi-layered answer as you can see. Typically in-person, no although most people don’t want to go to NY, for example, they don’t mind it being there or it being NY.
Collectively, they become tools of rightwing propaganda and eventually vote against blue states that, again, personally they don’t have any real problems with.
A third level is the chuds who believe fox news and newsmax etc etc and yes they are brainwashed cultist idiots whose own family are embarrassed by them. They are numerous in red state areas. Efforts to discuss any of the talking points are unsuccessful. Occasionally, a religious argument will carry some progressive element, but it’s few and far between.
The source of the fascist indoctrination, as always, has to be combatted.
It’s an easy way to drum up support from people who have never or rarely traveled, are already conservative, and have bought into the culture war that has been created to justify MAGA doing MAGA shit.
Yeah, there are people who will repeat the same talking points you’ve listed and even defend them with a surprising amount of anger, but they’re mostly ignorant, predjudiced dipshits confirming their biases and parroting what they’ve heard. If you’re a popular Republican and you blamed their problems on sunspots, they’d hate sunspots just as bad as they hate California.
It’s not that they hate blue states because they went there and had a bad time or because of some kind of personal history. They hate blue states because that’s what they think people in red states are supposed to do. If it someday goes out of style, they’ll quit talking about it.

Sadly that does tend to be how most biggotry works. they quickly conclude that most the people they actually meet and spend time with are “the good ones”. Kind of the way it usually works, the ones that don’t fall into their expectations must be the exceptions… so that the rule can stay in place.
