Correct. The only way to know for sure is to walk out the airlock and see with your own eyes.

I did a shit from a high tower to measure whether it fell straight to earth or curved indicating a round planet. It curved, that’s when I realized NASA must have replaced my anus.

We need to understand that flat earthers don’t lack the knowledge or experience to accept the evidence that can be made objective, but that they refuse a worldview that is not made by them.
chuckleslord@lemmy.world 1 month ago
The round earth viewpoint is very boring to discuss. It is round, obviously, but anything fun about that feels like math to talk about. A myth about a flat earth feels mystical and like you’re in a secret group. There’s an appeal in believing something that skeptics have a hard time understanding. I know, I’ve been both in my life, and the struggle is real. (Never a flat earther, though)
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 1 month ago
same with vaccines. saying they just work, isn’t exciting.
claiming they cause autism and are destroying society and we’re better off without them, makes you feel special and smart.
ptu@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
Flat earthers are just a niche whacko conspiracy group that’s being amplified by those participating in real conspiracies so that the general population thinks all conspiracies are just crazy talk.
5715@feddit.org 1 month ago
ofc, but they work because people are alienated and need a feeling of control
MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 1 month ago
Science is used to help Describe, Explain, Predict, and Control any phenomena studied. The Describe and Explain part would be the pure science, and the Predict and Control parts are the applied science part.
Instead of letting a Flat Earther moo on and on about the Describe and Explain part, force them to show devices, procedures or processes that have been created out of Flat Earther Descriptions and Explanations of reality.
If their observations are accurate, they should be able to demonstrate or generate something useful from their special knowledge. It should be something that simply cannot be generated using conventional Round Earth Descriptions or Explanations.
Tl;dr: Flat Earthers are unable to demonstrate practical application of their special knowledge that improves any process.
If they don’t produce, the discussion is over.

Look, they can make experiments, the problem is that every single one they do proves the earth is round.
I love the experiment flat earthers used in a Netflix documentary. They put a light source and two panels with small holes at the same height in them to focus the light. If the earth is flat, a camera would capture the light if it is at the same height as the last hole:
Picture showing a flat earth with the holes and camera at the same height
And if the earth is round, the camera would need to be higher to capture the light
The diagram now shows the man at the end holding the camera over his head to capture the light
When they checked the experiment at the same height, there was no light. Thinking it was a problem with the setup, they raised the camera and the light appeared. Their comment was “Huh” or something similar.
As far as I know, there are no flat earth explanations for this result.

hold on, i know that earth is an oblate spheroid not a sphere. i’m trying to think of how to flat earth this and it’s really hard. i’m just not smart enough to be that stupid and it really impresses me at some of the people who put together straight faced arguments for it. they must have to do so many takes.
anugeshtu@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Maybe they’re just 4-dimensional, thinking 3-dimensional, and when they’re in 3d- space, it’s 2-dimensional for them?
MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 1 month ago
I’m more interested in the put up or shut up, and less interested in the alleged internal struggle that prevents them from doing so.
Produce.
Wilco@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
No. When someone goes into outer space NASA actually rolls out a giant painting of “round” Earth. There are no limits to the craziness these people will go through to hide the truth.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 1 month ago
gotta keep those artists employed somehow
IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
I do get a good laugh when every once in a while a flat earther comes up with a newer and more convoluted way of proving that the earth is in fact round. Then there’s the bonus round where they do the Olympic level mental gymnastics to explain why their own results don’t prove anything.
Francislewwis@lemmy.world 1 month ago
“NASA hacked my eyes” is honestly peak commitment to the bit. No amount of evidence can defeat advanced denial technology. 😂

Hey, back in the 90s, I went to an theme park and they had those IMAX screen with moving chairs and you felt like you were getting chased by the shark or the dinosaurs. So imagine what they can do now when they stuff you in a small cabin, they can make you believe ANYTHING! Who’s crazy now huh?
Tap for spoiler
/s, obvs

hey where’s this cabin they stuff you in where they make you believe anything? i could use a weekend off and would like to believe i’m marilyn monroe

What’s the explanation for the shape of the Moon, Sun, all other planets, etc… in the flat earth mindset?
lugal@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
One aspect of flat earth is to put earth back to the center of the universe. Other planets are just dots in the sky, we are the real thing
1984@lemmy.today 1 month ago
Which is what the bible says also. Thats why its a popular belief.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
Probably that they’re flat discs as well

they got vaccines and became gay and round.
Rozauhtuno@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
All other things in the whole universe are round. Only Earth is flat, obviously.

I remember once while debating religion, Sam Harris making a point about how, when sharing certain beliefs, people pay an immediate price when they talk about them. The one in particular is that Elvis is still alive.
He wasn’t specifically talking about conspiracy theories, but it made me think about them, nonetheless. If I did my math right, were Elvis still alive, he’d be 91 years old today. So, it’s far, far more likely that Elvis is alive than it is that the Earth is flat.
Flat earthers do pay that sort of price, but I don’t think we ridicule them enough, compared to how much more ridiculous their views are than the people who think Elvis is still alive.
morto@piefed.social 1 month ago
I know this is a joke, but there was that group who was taken for a free trip to antarctica. We must stop rewarding flat earthers and anti science! Just ignore them, don’t try to prove anything to them, show them they’re not worth even getting close to
Midnitte@beehaw.org 1 month ago
See I thought he was doing it just to get free tickets to space.
huf@hexbear.net 1 month ago
no no, you’re right, the earth is flat, it’s always been flat. it’s just flat in a round way which can trick people who dont know how to look properly.
elaina@lemmy.zip 1 month ago
that’s one funny way to describe a massive sphere lol
Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Occam’s razor insists that you were de- and then re-programmed to think you were in space viewing the Earth, when, in fact, you were in a black room with an IV and a lurching goon whispering into your ear.
IT’S MORE LIKELY THAN NOT
lugal@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
Considering how few people got to space, you don’t need to be a conspiracy theorist to think that you’re not one of the lucky ones

ceenote@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It reads like a joke but it’s just a straight description of how flat earthers think.
TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It’s quite literally a joke about the Antarctica trip. There was one who changed their mind and was heavily ostracized for it.

My favorite theory from that whole debacle is that those guys actually went to the Las Vegas Sphere, which is apparently a giant green screen now (its not)
merc@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
That’s the problem. Believing in a flat earth isn’t just some weird quirk, like believing that gluten is bad for you or the number 4 is bad luck because in Chinese it sounds like the word for death. You can have beliefs like that and still maintain friendships with people who don’t share them. It’s such an illogical belief that people who express it are always mocked, and it’s also such a big “conspiracy” that believers have trouble not talking about it. That means believers tend to form a community to support each-other and defend against these insults. It’s basically an especially stupid religious community or a cult.
Giving up on your belief that the earth is flat means losing your whole community. There’s no real way to be a sphere-earther in the flat earther community. Some of the people “lose faith” but don’t admit it to the others in the community because they don’t want to be ostracized.
I would guess that the people who manage to leave the community are the ones who have friends and family that are willing to forgive and forget and welcome them back after they leave the cult. That also means that the ones who have lost their friends and family due to their wacky beliefs are never going to drop those beliefs because they’ll have nothing left.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
It’s a description about how so many people think about so many things. Flat earth is just an obviously silly one that we can mock people for.
The reality is that so many people simply refuse to accept new information that contradicts their previously held views. To the point where it has contributed to societal breakdown.
